Los Tucsonenses: The Mexican Community in Tucson, 1854–1941 (Culture, History, & the Contemporary), by Thomas E. Sheridan

Originally a presidio on the frontier of New Spain, Tucson was a Mexican community before the arrival of Anglo settlers. Unlike most cities in California and Texas, Tucson was not initially overwhelmed by Anglo immigrants, so that even until the early 1900s Mexicans made up a majority of the town's population. Indeed, it was through the efforts of Mexican businessmen and politicians that Tucson became a commercial center of the Southwest. Los Tucsonenses celebrates the efforts of these early entrepreneurs as it traces the Mexican community's gradual loss of economic and political power. Drawing on both statistical archives and pioneer reminiscences, Thomas Sheridan has written a history of Tucson's Mexican community that is both rigorous in its factual analysis and passionate in its portrayal of historic personages.

Review
"Thomas Sheridan's fine book tells an increasingly familiar story of how mexicanos in a southwestern community have fared over time under Anglo-American control. . . . A splendid book." —Pacific Historian

"Widely acclaimed as a model of innovative research, inspired writing, and thoughtful analysis." —Journal of Arizona History

"This is a rich and wide-ranging history of Mexicans in Tucson from the post-Mexican War era to World War II. . . . A valuable new addition to Chicano and southwestern community history." —The American Historical Review

"Blending oral histories, biographies and computer-processed census data, Los Tucsonenses traces the flowering of this Mexican culture." —Arizona Republic

"A model of how such studies should be executed and presented." —SMRC Newsletter

"Everyone who reads it will emerge with an enriched understanding of the city's history." —Tucson Citizen

"The subject matter alone makes this a significant study. But beyond that, the book has two other strengths: it is thoroughly researched and documented, and the author has avoided model building in favor of telling the story his facts support. . . . A noteworthy addition to regional, urban, and ethnic history collections" —Choice

Calling all Arizona buffs or Linda Ronstadt fans. You've gotta read this book.
By Annette Ranald
As the title suggests, it is primarily an academic book, written by a professor and suitable for study in an upper-level college course about Arizona history. But that shouldn't deter the average reader. There are enough anecdotes and narrative in this book to make it interesting. Old Tucson (which is still locally called the Old Pueblo) dates back to 1692, when Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino established nearby Mission San Xavier del Bac (the White Dove of the Desert) and a settlement was formed near what is now "A" mountain. By 1775, the Spanish had established the Presidio de San Augustin de Tucson. In the centuries since its founding, Tucson has seen its fair share of Indian raids and battles of all kinds, not to mention cameo appearances by various outlaws and other characters in Arizona history. And, as always, it has been at the center of tensions and debate on the Border. Then, there's the Ronstadt family, the story of which seems to tie the whole book together. Whether you're into Arizona history, or you're a Ronstadt fan, you'll enjoy this book.

Angeleno Days: An Arab American Writer on Family, Place, and Politics, by Gregory Orfalea

Though he has spent half of his life elsewhere, Gregory Orfalea has remained obsessed with Los Angeles. That “brutal, beautiful city along the Pacific sea” shaped him and led to a series of essays originally published in the Los Angeles Times Magazine. These deeply moving pieces are gathered here together for the first time.

Populated with fascinating characters—the Angelenos of Orfalea’s life—these essays tell the story of the author’s trials. He returns to Los Angeles to teach, trying to reconcile the LA of his childhood with the city he now faces. He takes on progressively more difficult and painful subjects, finally confronting the memories of the shocking tragedy that took the lives of his father and sister.

With more than 400,000 Arab Americans in Los Angeles—probably surpassing Detroit as the largest contingent in America—Orfalea also explores his own community and its political and social concerns. He agonizes over another destruction of Lebanon and examines in searing detail a massacre of civilians in Iraq.

Angeleno Days takes the memoir and personal essay to rare heights. Orfalea is a deeply human writer who reveals not only what it means to be human in America now, but also what it will take to remain human in the days to come. These essays soar, confound, reveal, and strike at our senses and sensibilities, forcing us to think and feel in new ways.

Review
“These essays, recollecting Gregory Orfalea's American life, are delightful and wise.  I don't think Los Angeles has ever received such lovely valentines from a native son.” —Richard Rodriguez, author of Brown: The Last Discovery of America

“Southern California has produced its distinct literary voices, from Nathaniel West and Joan Didion to Walter Mosley and Michael Connelly. Gregory Orfalea is the next in this series, with his moving essays about a Southern California culture that will ring true to locals and surprise many outsiders. I was delighted to read this addition to the literature of my homeland and recommend it to readers, wherever they are from.” —James Fallows, author of Blind Into Baghdad: America's War in Iraq

“Orfalea is at the peak of his literary powers. This book is an energetic, passionate, and creative take on the multicultural West intertwined with Arab American life in the United States. It’s a fantastic contribution to the literature of the urban and mythic West, along with some of the best Arab American writing ever assembled.” —Gary Paul Nabhan, author of Arab/American: Landscape, Culture, and Cuisine in Two Great Deserts

About the Author
Gregory Orfalea directed the Writing Program and taught at Pitzer College of the Claremont Colleges and at George Washington University.  He currently is teaching Arab American Literature at Georgetown. He is the author of two acclaimed histories, one the most comprehensive work on his ethnic community to date, The Arab Americans: A History, and the other, about his father’s ill-fated unit during the Second World War, Messengers of the Lost Battalion.  He has published two books of poetry and his collection of short stories is forthcoming on Syracuse University Press, The Man Who Guarded the Bomb.

Isabella Greenway: An Enterprising Woman, by Kristie Miller

She was at home on the western range and in New York salons. An energetic entrepreneur who managed a ranch, an airline, and a resort. A politician who became a key player in the New Deal. Isabella Greenway blazed a trail for remarkable women in Arizona politics today, from Janet Napolitano to Sandra Day O'Connor. Now Kristie Miller offers an intimate view of this extraordinary woman.

Isabella Greenway's life was linked with both Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Her infancy was spent on a snow-swept ranch in North Dakota, where young TR was a neighbor and a friend. In her teens, she captivated Edith Wharton's New York as a glamorous debutante. A bridesmaid in the wedding of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, Isabella was the bride of Robert Ferguson, a Scottish nobleman and one of TR's Rough Riders. They went west when he developed tuberculosis; after his death, she married his fellow Rough Rider, Arizona copper magnate John Greenway.

In Tucson, the energetic Isabella ran an airline, worked with disabled veterans, and founded the world-famous Arizona Inn. When the Great Depression brought hard times, Eleanor Roosevelt recruited Isabella to work for the Democratic Party. Isabella played a decisive role in Franklin Roosevelt's nomination to the presidency in 1932; the New York Times called her "the most-talked-of woman at the National Democratic Convention." She was elected to Congress as Arizona's only US Representative, and again drew national media attention when she challenged FDR for not being sufficiently progressive.

Miller's meticulous biography captures a life of adventure and romance, from southern tobacco country to the ballrooms of New York, from western ranches to the dome of the US Capitol. She shows national politics played out behind the scenes, Isabella's lifelong friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt, and the drama of a loyal wife caring for a dying husband despite having fallen in love with a younger man. The book also shows Greenway's considerable influence on the development of Arizona's business and politics in the early decades of statehood. Although Isabella Greenway died in 1953, the Arizona Inn—a tribute to her enterprise—remains a premier resort hotel, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2005. This book, too, celebrates Isabella's energy, vision, indomitable spirit, and love of life.

Beautifully written, meticulously researched, fascinating story
By Nell Minow
This is a biography that reads like an engrossing novel -- except that you'd never believe it as fiction. Isabella Greenway was not just enterprising; she was courageous, committed, visionary, passionate, a true pioneer. Miller, a brilliant historian and a graceful writer, makes Greenway and her era come alive. Each of her lives -- frontier woman, wife of two of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, close friend of Eleanor Roosevelt (their letters are touching and illuminating), one of the first women elected to Congress -- is riveting reading.

A Remarkable Woman; A Remarkable Book
By Bruce Hilpert
Despite my years of interest in Arizona history (primarily 19th century), I never knew anything about Isabella Greenway beyond "the wife of Jack Greenway" (who I also knew almost nothing about).

What an oversight! She was a remarkable woman and this book does an excellent job of bringing her to life through the many letters that she wrote to her family, friends (such as Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt), and lovers.

Growing up on the periphery of New York high society in the 1890s, she was the "poor cousin" who socialized with the Roosevelts, Astors and many others. Following her NY debut, she married a much older man and then spent fifteen years living on a ranch outside of Silver City, NM as she nursed him through a long struggle with tuberculosis. For several years their home was a pair of wooden-floored tents and she spent her days building callouses as she hauled water, chopped wood and tended the horses and chickens. What a change from New York society life! But, her letters reveal a spirit that remained positive throughout her ordeal and her family developed an intense love for the west and the ranching life.

Her fortunes changed dramatically after the death of her husband when she married her longtime love, Jack Greenway, an extremely wealthy mining engineer and executive. Her happiness, however, was short-lived. Several years later, following her establishment of the Arizona Inn, she responded to a call to public service and ran successfully for Congress after transforming the Arizona Democratic party in her role as Arizona's National Democratic Committeewoman.

Through her use of resources from the AHS' extensive Greenway collection (several hundred boxes of materials) Author Kristie Miller has revealed the most intimate thoughts of Isabella Greenway to compose a remarkable portrait of a most remarkable woman. It is very well written and reflects her meticulous research skills. Interestingly, while her public life is adequately covered, it was the glimpses into her personal relationships that intrigued me the most.

By Midwest Book Review
Isabella Greenway: An Enterprising Woman is the biography of an amazing woman, who played a crucial role in FDR's nomination for President. Married and widowed twice to two of Theodore Roosevelt's rough riders, an energetic businessperson who managed a ranch, an airline, and a resort, a leader who was elected to Congress as Arizona's only U.S. Representative, and was dubbed the "most talked-about woman" at the National Democratic Convention by the New York Times, her contribution to women's role in politics is nothing less than trailblazing. Illustrated with a scattering of black-and-white photographs, Isabella Greenway: An Enterprising Woman chronicles her life in a narrative manner as vibrant and evocative as Greenway herself must have once been.

Tertiary History of the Grand Canyon District, by Clarence E. Dutton

Originally published in 1882, Clarence Dutton’s Tertiary History of the Grand Cañon District has become one of the definitive books on the Grand Canyon. Commissioned as a study of the region’s geology and issued by the fledgling U.S. Geological Survey, it is as much admired today for its literary as its scientific merits. With its beautiful illustrations by Thomas Moran and William Henry Holmes, it is a seminal work on the Canyon that has never been surpassed for its eloquence and authority.

This new edition of Dutton’s magnum opus makes that work available once again. Visitors to the Canyon will gain a new appreciation of its majesty as Dutton takes readers on several excursions among its castellated and cathedral-like peaks and ridges. Along the way, he explains the peculiar characteristics of different rocks, the water-sculpturing process, volcanic cones and outflows, the extent of the river’s erosion, and other geological features.

Dutton’s Tertiary History remains arguably the most evocative and compelling geological writing ever done on the Grand Canyon region. As Stephen J. Pyne observes in his foreword, Dutton “recast a rocky peninsula into geo-poetry, reshaped an amorphous panorama of Time into narrative History, and transformed an American scene into a universal symbol.” No one who has thrilled to the majesty of the Grand Canyon will fail to be moved by this timeless work.

UofA Press all-but-ruins a literary and artistic treasure
By geophysicist
Dutton's 1882 Tertiary History is a literary and scientific masterpiece: those who have read Thoreau and Muir will certainly agree with Stephen Pyne that this work is more imaginative than that of the other giants 19th-century nature writing. Too, I find the prose more compelling than that of Thoreau. And while some of the science (i.e., interpretation) may have changed since Dutton's original study, the data that Dutton presents with both care and flair has not. But an extremely important part of this book is the illustrations, specifically the wood-cut lithographs of drawings by Thomas Moran and William Holmes. These were not added to the original book as flourishes; they were, in addition to their beauty, illustrations of the scientific and aesthetic points Dutton was making in the text. Looking at an 1882 original, or even at the 1977 Peregrine Smith reproduction, one discovers these illustrations to be a delight: the capabilities, even in a black-and-white lithograph, to produce subtleties of light and shadow are astonishing. Not so in this UofA Press production. Their lack of care in figure replication and in overseeing the printing process has ruined most of the beauty of the lithographs: most are so over-inked that much of the detail is lost and the figures seem dull and lifeless. In fact, many of these lithographs are better replicated in the...Penguin Nature Classics paperback version of John Wesley Powell's Exploration of the Colorado River. UofA Press has done a great disservice to an important work. Save your [money]. Go to a library and delight in one of the earlier versions. Too, the entire Atlas that accompanied the monograph can be viewed on the WWW through the Library of Congress site.

Silent Victims: Hate Crimes Against Native Americans, by Barbara Perry

Hate crimes against Native Americans are a common occurrence, Barbara Perry reveals, although most go unreported. In this eye-opening book, Perry shines a spotlight on these acts, which are often hidden in the shadows of crime reports. She argues that scholarly and public attention to the historical and contemporary victimization of Native Americans as tribes or nations has blinded both scholars and citizens alike to the victimization of individual Native Americans. It is these acts against individuals that capture her attention.

Silent Victims is a unique contribution to the literature on hate crime. Because most extant literature treats hate crimes—even racial violence—rather generically, this work breaks new ground with its findings. For this book, Perry interviewed nearly 300 Native Americans and gathered additional data in three geographic areas: the Four Corners region of the U.S. Southwest, the Great Lakes, and the Northern Plains. In all of these locales, she found that bias-related crime oppresses and segregates Native Americans.

Perry is well aware of the history of colonization in North America and its attendant racial violence. She argues that the legacy of violence today can be traced directly to the genocidal practices of early settlers, and she adds valuable insights into the ways in which “Indians” have been constructed as the Other by the prevailing culture. Perry’s interviews with Native Americans recount instances of appalling treatment, often at the hands of law enforcement officials. In her conclusion, Perry draws from her research and interviews to suggest ways in which Native Americans can be empowered to defend themselves against all forms of racist victimization.

Excellent up to date information on the ethnoviolence that is prevalent in Native American communities. Hopefully, it gives better insight for non-Natives and helps them to understand what indigenous people experience on their reservations. Very eye-opening book!

The Sonoran Desert Tortoise: Natural History, Biology, and Conservation (Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Studies in Natural History)From Un

One of the most recognizable animals of the Southwest, the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) makes its home in both the Sonoran and Mohave Deserts, as well as in tropical areas to the south in Mexico. Called by Tohono O'odham people "komik'c-ed," or "shell with living thing inside," it is one of the few desert creatures kept as a domestic pet—as well as one of the most studied reptiles in the world. Most of our knowledge of desert tortoises comes from studies of Mohave Desert populations in California and Nevada. However, the ecology, physiology, and behavior of these northern populations are quite different from those of their southern, Sonoran Desert, and tropical cousins, which have been studied much less. Differences in climate and habitat have shaped the evolution of three races of desert tortoises as they have adapted to changes in heat, rainfall, and sources of food and shelter as the deserts developed in the last ten million years.

This book presents the first comprehensive summary of the natural history, biology, and conservation of the Sonoran and Sinaloan desert tortoises, reviewing the current state of knowledge of these creatures with appropriate comparisons to Mohave tortoises. It condenses a vast amount of information on population ecology, activity, and behavior based on decades of studying tortoise populations in Arizona and Sonora, Mexico, and also includes important material on the care and protection of tortoises. Thirty-two contributors address such topics as tortoise fossil records, DNA analysis, and the mystery of secretive hatchlings and juveniles. Tortoise health is discussed in chapters on the care of captives, and original data are presented on the diets of wild and captive tortoises, the nutrient content of plant foods, and blood parameters of healthy tortoises. Coverage of conservation issues includes husbandry methods for captive tortoises, an overview of protective measures, and an evaluation of threats to tortoises from introduced grass and wildfires. A final chapter on cultural knowledge presents stories and songs from indigenous peoples and explores their understanding of tortoises.

As the only comprehensive book on the desert tortoise, this volume gathers a vast amount of information for scientists, veterinarians, and resource managers while also remaining useful to general readers who keep desert tortoises as backyard pets. It will stand as an enduring reference on this endearing creature for years to come.

"Essential reading for all involved with G. agassizii, or interested in tortoise biology in general . . . This may be the most authoritative book ever written on tortoises." —Applied Herpetology

From the Inside Flap
One of the most recognizable animals of the Southwest, the desert tortoise ("Gopherus agassizii") makes its home in both the Sonoran and Mohave Deserts, as well as in tropical areas to the south in Mexico. Called by Tohono O'odham people "komik'c-ed," or "shell with living thing inside," it is one of the few desert creatures kept as a domestic pet--as well as one of the most studied reptiles in the world. Tortoise health is discussed in chapters on the care of captives, and original data are presented on the dietsof wild and captive tortoises, the nutrient content of plant foods, and blood parameters of healthy tortoises.

Desert Tortoises

Think of it as a textbook
By K. Shaw
The summary given by Amazon is entirely accurate. The work of 32 scholars went into this volume. If you're looking for a beginner's guide to tortoise care, this isn't it. However, if you want to understand the Sonoran Desert Tortoise in depth and if you aren't put off by Latin terminology, you will probably enjoy it. You are guaranteed to learn something new, as the topics cover geology, mitochondrial DNA, botany, physiology, and pathology as well as general information on the care and protection of these animals.

Everthing you wanted to know and more
By Desert Rat
I bought this book after adopting a Sonoran desert tortoise. I appreciated all the information, but there is way more info than I needed. Only one chapter of the book was particularly useful, and I refer to it occasionally still. This is a very good book, but it seems more targeted to biologists than the lay reader.

Baja California Missions: In the Footsteps of the Padres (Southwest Center Series), by David Burckhalter, Mina Sedgwick

Bathed in desert light and shadow, rising up from the earth in improbable, faraway places, stand eight original Spanish missions on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Built of stone by Roman Catholic priests and indigenous laborers in the eighteenth century, these stunning missions dominate the landscape around them. Baja California Missions: In the Footsteps of the Padres is a beautiful and informative book about the eight monumental Spanish colonial churches, buildings seldom seen by those familiar with the missions of California, Arizona, and Sonora, Mexico.

With gorgeous photographs of the architecture and religious art, and supported by a concise history that outlines the peninsula’s exploration and colonization by Roman Catholic priests, Baja California Missions excels as a book of photography and history. It promises adventure for readers at home, as well as for travelers ready to explore the churches in person.

The eight Spanish colonial stone churches of Baja California endure as the only intact originals of 34 missions built by the padres during the peninsula’s colonization. Due to structural renovations and restorations of the artwork undertaken over the last 30 years, the renowned mission churches have become sources of pride to the citizens of Baja California. Travelers are invited to visit at any time, especially during patron saint day celebrations.

As a guide, Baja California Missions is fully up to date, with directions for navigating Baja’s paved highways and desert and mountain roads. The mission sites are pinpointed on a topographic roadmap of the peninsula. A church floor plan is provided to accompany a walk-through tour for each church interior. The lovely eighteenth-century oil paintings and wooden statues that grace the church altars are also identified and described.

Superb photography - wonderful accounts of several Baja Missions
By john
Different from many books about the history of missions in Baja, this book is focused on the eight remaining stone missions - this has become one of my favorite and most recommended books on the subject.

Superb Writing and Photography
By Joe
I've traveled extensively in Baja and I think Burckhalter has done an exemplary job in capturing the spirit of the place. The book is well written and the photography is superb. My compliments and thanks to the author. Based on the material in this book, I am already planning my next trip to Baja and this tour will focus on the missions I have not yet seen.

A fine guide for the armchair traveler, and likely for a real visitor, too.
By lyndonbrecht
I'll likely never make it Baja California, so this is a report by an armchair traveler. This is a short, informative read. The photography is excellent, and the accounts are quite well done--note that the book describes some roads, routes and comments on accommodations or the lack of them, but some of that may be out of date. At first I was a little leery of the text, because at first glance it seemed to be romanticizing rural peasants, but the more I read the more it became evident that the authors like and respect the people .

The short intro to the area is very good. I had not thought of how large Baja California was--but at 56,000 square miles and 800-mile length it's sizable. I knew there were mountains but there are more and far higher than I had realized. Moreover the two sides differ considerably in temperature and aspects of climate. Even in the 2000s sizable areas remain stubbornly rural and difficult to access. The isolation of some sites remains extraordinary.

The eight stone missions are the sole surviving intact relicts of the Spanish era. Given a history that sometimes included abandonment, it's surprising they survived. All appear now to be cherished and better taken care of. They all seem to be distinctive. Each mission is represented by about a half dozen photos, usually including the entrance, the altar area (I hope that's the right name) with some wonderful examples of Baroque painting and sculpture (usually polychromed wood). Each mission represents ears and years of hard labor and sacrifice and must also represent the hopes and dreams of the clergy setting up these places--Jesuits, and later Franciscans and Dominicans.

The photo that struck me most is Mision San Javier Vigge Biaundo, dating from the mid 1700s.
