About the Author
Mimi R. Gladstein’s books and articles cover such diverse topics as Hemingway and Steinbeck, Ayn Rand and feminist criticism. She has served the University of Texas at El Paso as Associate Dean of Liberal Arts, Chair of the English Department, and Chair of Theatre, Dance, and Film, and was the first director of the Women’s Studies Program.

Daniel Chacón is the author of Chicano Chicanery and the novel And the Shadows Took Him. He teaches in the bilingual MFA program at the University of Texas at El Paso.

A vigilant centrist, who got results by building coalitions on both sides of the aisle, Senator DeConcinias approach was not bound to strict party alliances but was deeply rooted in the independent political environment of Arizona. During his career, he sponsored legislation limiting the sale of assault weapons, which provoked the National Rifle Association. He confounded Democratic Party regulars by supporting Clarence Thomas during the controversial confirmation hearings and again split with his party in his support for William Rehnquistas nomination to Chief Justice. In 1980 he voted for Ronald Reagan, but in 1993 he cast the swing vote for President Bill Clintonas tax bill, which was strongly opposed by Republicans in Arizona. This political memoir will be of interest to anyone concerned with the inner workings of the U.S. Senate or Arizona politics and offers relevant insights into todayas political climate.

About the Author
Jack L. August Jr. is executive director at the Arizona Historical Foundation at Arizona State University, where he teaches graduate courses in water policy and management. He is a former Fulbright scholar and National Endowment for the Humanities Research fellow. Dr. August has written books and articles on twentieth-century western political and environmental history, including Vision in the Desert: Carl Hayden and Hydropolitics in the American Southwest (TCU Press, 1999) and Senator Dennis Deconcini: From the Center of the Aisle (University of Arizona Press, 2006).

An enjoyable read

I greatly enjoyed this book. It is a good read and would make a valuble addition to the collection of any student of Arizona history or of the workings of the United States Senate. Most of all, it is a tome about the importance of loyalty and decency in politics and in life written by one of the fine public servants in Arizona history and one of Arizona's premier historians. It is particularly revealing about the ethical conflicts inherent in political campaign fundraising. For southern Arizonans it is also very illuminating about the political anthropology of that region.

According to Ponyboy, there are two kinds of people in the world: greasers and socs. A soc (short for "social") has money, can get away with just about anything, and has an attitude longer than a limousine. A greaser, on the other hand, always lives on the outside and needs to watch his back. Ponyboy is a greaser, and he's always been proud of it, even willing to rumble against a gang of socs for the sake of his fellow greasers--until one terrible night when his friend Johnny kills a soc. The murder gets under Ponyboy's skin, causing his bifurcated world to crumble and teaching him that pain feels the same whether a soc or a greaser. This classic, written by S. E. Hinton when she was 16 years old, is as profound today as it was when it was first published in 1967.

Blast from the Past

I first read _The Outsiders_ 19 years ago (the year that the film version was released). Hinton was all the rage to read in my high school and I was seriously attached to Ponyboy and Sodapop and the rest. Like many another teenage girl smitten by Ralph Macchio, I memorized the Robert Frost poem and cried buckets at the end of the book.
It's funny to me to hear recent reviewers discussing the book in terms of its relationship to gangs, because I don't see it as being about rival factions. Instead, I see it more as a meditation on the price of having an inside and an outside to any given social context. At the time the book was written, it was the socs and the greasers. At my high school it was the Jocks and the Beegs. It's about people being judged by their clothes and their family rather than their abilities and their desires.
Hinton's book stands up well to time-- I'm a lot more cynical than I was as a child and I couldn't summon tears anymore for the characters, but reading it I could still revisit the concerns that I had at the time and the world that this book represented.
A good gift for young teenagers.

All of us should seek to stay gold.....

I read this book at age 12. Now, at age 48, I am reading it to my 12 year old twin boys. The story is as jolting, revolting and revealing as it was 40+ years ago, only this time I get to experience it with my kids. I did not know that S.E. Hinton was 15-16 when she wrote this novel, and that she got her publishing contract the day she graduated from high school. That puts the novel in an even stronger heroic light. But context and wunderkind facts aside, the book is just plain GOOD. The plot: rich kids v. poor kids with of course black and white labels plastered over gray characters who are both good and bad, rich and poor and, ultimately, alive and dead. How Ponyboy digests the trauma of a week in Tulsa, and what lessons the reader derives from his story is what makes S.E. Hinton a genius and The Outsiders a must read for every single teenager. I loved this book then; I loved this book now.

HIGHLY RECCOMEND

(SMEHREHRH......) Golly, let's get going. Okay. So this is an amazing book, don't care who you are or what your taste is in books, you should read this. Now, I'd like to say this seemed like it took ages to arrive, because I was looking forward to it so much, but it really only took a few days. The product was not damaged at all, aka in perfect condition. I don't know how to describe how much I love this.
I would say there is some violence, and some sexual content.
Now, the sexual content is mostly innuendoes that are VERY easy to miss, mostly from Dallas....because, yeah, he's Dally.

This lavishly-illustrated (125 photographs) 1979 book contains the full story of John Paul II's 1979 visit to the United States, including summaries of his major addresses, and an Introduction by Fulton J. Sheen. The book notes, however, that this was not Karol Wojtyla's first visit to the United States: "As a cardinal, he visited the country twice, once in September 1969 for 12 days, and again in August and September 1976 for almost six weeks. He had been in 19 different cities." (Pg. 130)

In a general audience in February 1979, "he gave qualified support to the theology of liberation. It was the first time a pope had publicly praised the theology of liberation as positive for the church. The pope had endorsed the double stress on evangelization and liberation made by the Latin American bishops... the pope said liberation theology should not be exclusively connected with Latin America. 'It must be admitted that one of the great contemporary theologians, Hans Urs von Balthasar, is right when he demands a theology of liberation on a universal scale.'" (Pg. 62)

In October, "John Paul walked to the podium... the native of Poland became the second pope to address the General Assembly. It was almost 14 years earlier to the day---Oct. 4, 1965---that Pope Paul VI had spoken to the assembly... he set forth a measured plea for world leaders to put aside political differences in an effort to aid humanity." (Pg. 144)

During an October Mass that was televised, an "unusual situation" occurred as the pope would not give Communion in the hand ("a common practice in the United States"), but "With a clear gesture, John Paul indicated that he wanted to place the host on the tongue... [A spokesman explained], "the pope's decision 'should not be interpreted to mean that he does not agree' with the practice of Communion in the hand." (Pg. 188) He also became the first pope to visit the White House.

At his visit to a shrine where 7,000 women religious were waiting for him, "In a formal speech of greeting to John Paul, Sister [Theresa] Kane came as close as anyone had ever come to publicly challenging the pope to his face on the church's position with regard to women... The remarks drew enthusiastic applause from some of the nuns and stony silence from others. Her welcoming speech concluded, Sister Kane walked to where the pope was seated and as he stood, she kneeled before him and he placed his hand on her head in blessing... His address, however, in a revision of what was originally prepared, emphasized the traditional role of women in the church." (Pg. 221-222)
