Life Immemorial

This wonderfully sensitive book has been a cherished possession since the late 70's when I was fortunate enough to have Ms. Hailey autograph my copy. Since, I have given this book to countless friends, old and young. I saw Barbara Rush brilliantly perform this one woman play adapted from the book and took all my friends to that also. Then thoroughly enjoyed the miniseries on NBC with Sally Field.

Currently, I am producing this play as a benefit for my local Women's Center in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. It will play in a small intimate theater Feb. 18, 19, 20.

I obviously love the book, the play, the message. Women everywhere are inspired to exhibit strength and independence with softness, grace and humor. Buy this for your daughters and granddaughters. Then, get the play produced in your town as a benefit for a local Women's Center or other agency that reaches out and supports women.

Any literary piece that is as relevant after 20+ years as it was the day it was written is pretty amazing!

A Model Guide for Women of all Ages

I have read and re-read this book over the years, and again this summer found it in my Beach Pack. For any age, EFH has produced a kind, gentle view of life as a woman who grew up knowing her place in the world, and yet being able to go beyond what her times would have expected of a woman. It is very much like finding old letters in a trunk, and I came to think of the writer as a matron of her times, giving to herself and all women the understanding that taking care of one's self, being able to be truly independent, is a key to freedom in every sense. Read it ladies. I read it at 20 and 30, and it reads just as well into the 40s and 50s. My mother's good friend in her 70s came upon it on my bookshelf, and it has become her favorite book of all times. Enjoy.

Wonderful poems and interviews

Wonderful poems and interviews exploring oral tradition and poetry, and staying grounded in Native American culture in the midst of the modern world. Includes a good sampling of contemporary writers, including the prolific Paula Gunn Allen, and N. Scott Momaday, author of the classic House Made of Dawn. One of my all-time favorites.

An excellent scholarly work

The book is an excellent base for the study of prehispanic Mexico. It is extremely useful also for the student of Nahuatl language because it also offers the full original version of these texts in the companion volume. It gives a slightly different point of view to these two fundamental texts from the spanish translation by Primo Feliciano Velazquez. Although less poetic than the spanish version, it is probably closer to the litteral meaning of the nahuatl original, and thus very useful for the understanding of each fragment separately. It is a classical work which can be bought in full confidence.

This is an excellent, first class work translating an original manuscript of an interview of a native Mexica shortly after the conquest replete with Aztec myths, creation legends and history. For anyone seriously interested in Aztec times, its a "must".

As best as I can tell, it is an unfiltered, unbiased and neutral printing of the informant's own words with many helpful explanatory notes..

This is a great compilation of recent research from various authors on the use of wild and cultivated plants by Native Americans and the transition of using/tending wild plants to actual cultivated/domesticated plants. Most of the botanical evidence has been collected from flotation techniques where plant remains are recovered from archaeological sites and analyzed. The chapter titles are as follows: Prehistoric Ethnobotany in Eastern North America: An Introduction; Eastern Woodland Overview; Patterns of Wild Plant Utilization in the Prehistoric Eastern woodlands; Domesticated Crop Plants and the Evolution of Food Production Economies in Eastern North America; Eastern Woodlands Anthropogenic Ecology; Paleoethnobotany in the Northeast; Great Plains Paleoethnobotany; Trends in Caribbean Island Archaeobotany. There are many tables and figures (graphs, maps and a few B&W photos/drawings of plant remains). Other than the obvious audience this book would appeal to, it would also be a valuable resource for wild edible plant foragers. This book is a must if you are looking for really useful info on the caloric and nutritional composition of acorns, hickory nuts etc. It also summarizes the trends of nut use in various regions.

It is typical of Gabriel García Márquez that it will be many pages before his narrative circles back to the ice, and many chapters before the hero of One Hundred Years of Solitude, Buendía, stands before the firing squad. In between, he recounts such wonders as an entire town struck with insomnia, a woman who ascends to heaven while hanging laundry, and a suicide that defies the laws of physics: A trickle of blood came out under the door, crossed the living room, went out into the street, continued on in a straight line across the uneven terraces, went down steps and climbed over curbs, passed along the Street of the Turks, turned a corner to the right and another to the left, made a right angle at the Buendía house, went in under the closed door, crossed through the parlor, hugging the walls so as not to stain the rugs, went on to the other living room, made a wide curve to avoid the dining-room table, went along the porch with the begonias, and passed without being seen under Amaranta's chair as she gave an arithmetic lesson to Aureliano José, and went through the pantry and came out in the kitchen, where Úrsula was getting ready to crack thirty-six eggs to make bread.

The story follows 100 years in the life of Macondo, a village founded by José Arcadio Buendía and occupied by descendants all sporting variations on their progenitor's name: his sons, José Arcadio and Aureliano, and grandsons, Aureliano José, Aureliano Segundo, and José Arcadio Segundo. Then there are the women--the two Úrsulas, a handful of Remedios, Fernanda, and Pilar--who struggle to remain grounded even as their menfolk build castles in the air. If it is possible for a novel to be highly comic and deeply tragic at the same time, then One Hundred Years of Solitude does the trick. Civil war rages throughout, hearts break, dreams shatter, and lives are lost, yet the effect is literary pentimento, with sorrow's outlines bleeding through the vibrant colors of García Márquez's magical realism. Consider, for example, the ghost of Prudencio Aguilar, whom José Arcadio Buendía has killed in a fight. So lonely is the man's shade that it haunts Buendía's house, searching anxiously for water with which to clean its wound. Buendía's wife, Úrsula, is so moved that "the next time she saw the dead man uncovering the pots on the stove she understood what he was looking for, and from then on she placed water jugs all about the house."

A masterpiece. Classic

The beginning of the book contains a family tree of the Buendia family, and if you're like me you'll surely mangle and dog-ear this page as you work your way though the book, trying to keep track of the Aurelianos, Remedios, and Ursulas.
But the struggle is worth it. This was truly the great novel that Garcia Marquez was meant to write; to me everything of Marquez that followed seems like recycled material. I first read One Hundred Years of Solitude years ago before moving to Latin America. Now that I here and have read it again, many of the messages that before were inaccessible now reveal themselves. The Story of Macondo is the story of Colombia and, to a larger extent, of Latin America. The reviewers tell us this, but it is amazing to see it with my own eyes.
The literal and the fantastic are interwoven with a seamlessness that amazes. One compares his style with Kafka before and Kundera after, literary voice established in this novel has withstood the test of time. It remains unique.
The book is at once funny, sad, tragic; it's history and fantasy. But overall it is a marvelous read. Clearly one of my all time favorites. There are very few books that I recommend as highly as this one. A true classic.

Rabassa translation is exceptional

Marquez asked fellow writers for "best translator" recommendations and fortunately selected Gregory Rabassa. Without belaboring the enormous difficulties inherent when translating creative writing, I feel Rabassa has done an exceptionally good job. I participate in a mainly English-speaking Spanish conversation and reading group here in New Mexico and have created side-by-side versions for close study of Marquez's classic tale. Having done such side-by-side comparisons of other works -- which have usually been tedious (and sometimes hard to recognize much correspondence of the translation with respect to the original), I believe Rabassa's translation is probably as close to the original as reasonably possible.

An Art Piece For The Ages

My daughter had to read this for her summer reading book. In her words:

I am a student in the IB program, and I was assigned this book to read and annotate over the summer for my Literature class. My first run, I went through it very quickly, neglecting any deep analysis, which is something you can't do while reading this. One may be put off by the frequent instances of pedophilic and incestuous behavior scattered throughout the novel. However, upon annotating it and reading it again, I slowly warmed up to the book. The characters and their experiences are some of the most complex I have ever encountered in any fictional work. You will not know whether to love, hate, or be indifferent towards them, but you will come to appreciate the things that they did and the way the existence of each one contributed to the plot. The plot has many layers, some of them impervious to normal analysis and reasoning. No one can arrive at the end of One Hundred Years of Solitude feeling satisfied. It leaves the reader with thousands of questions. Nonetheless, I can wholeheartedly say that I love this book.

Ultimately, Gabo Marquez created an art piece, one that will be remembered as a classic for centuries to come. My only reason for knocking off a star is because it moved me to tears. :)

Heavenly!

Where Angels Walk is an unforgettable book of God's love, help and intervention in our lives through the love of His Angels. All the stories are true and unbelievably remarkable. God has told us, "Ask and ye shall receive", and that includes the asking for help for our loved ones and for ourselves.
This is a book that will renew your faith and reaffirm God's love for us. It is at the darkest times of our lives, when we feel alone and abandoned, that we are loved the most. Help is there and we just have to ask for it. As Joan Anderson says, "...that, whatever their failings, God is holding them gently in the palm of His hand."
Reading the numerous stories, you will discover that angels can take many forms and not just the heavenly beings we were taught about as children.
Read this book to renew your spirit, increase your faith and to uplift your life. You will NOT be disappointed. This book is a gem. And remember that you are loved and that miracles do indeed happen!

Lassiter (anthropology, Ball State Univ.) presents a revised version of his 1995 Ph.D. dissertation. He begins his narrative with an account of his experiences in the Order of the Arrow, an affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America, examining the influence of the Order's teachings on his conception of Indian culture. Then Lassiter details his evolution as he goes from powwows sponsored by hobbyists to contact with Kiowa Indians in Southwestern Oklahoma, where he travels the powwow circuit and sometimes performs as a head singer. In the book's second half, Lassiter focuses on the dance tradition known as the Gourd Dance and the Kiowa song associated with it. The power of the song, referred to in the title, comes from the way the members of the community hear and respond to it. The book works both as a personal and anthropological journey. A very considerate book grounded in experience.

The most important thing to keep in mind when picking up this book is that it is a "collaborative ethnography." While reading you will get the feeling that this is not a solo project, but one undertaken by a whole community. A community made up of people who express themselves in different fashions, but are still working towards a common goal. It is obvious that this is a very personal work and Lassiter reveals much of himself to the reader which only reinforces the value and importance of song. "Power of Kiowa Song" is very readable and will interest those from various backgrounds. Academics as well as the casual reader will all learn something. Highly recommended.

A delightful read for the mind and the heart

From beginning to end, this wonderful blend of ethnographic information and personal experiences pulls the reader into the community, into the heart of the Kiowa people and definitely, into the song. For the academic and general reader, through the telling of personal experiences, this book offers an insight into the people and the thread of song and dance that holds them together as a community. Having had the privilege of singing many times with Dr. Lassiter, this book was just one more song well sung. Thank you, Eric, now, lead out another good one.
