Polities and Power: Archaeological Perspectives on the Landscapes of Early StatesFrom University of Arizona Press

This distinctive book is the first to address the topic of landscape archaeology in early states from a truly global perspective. It provides an excellent introduction to—and overview of—the discipline today. The volume grew out of the Fifth Biennial Meeting of the Complex Societies Group, whose theme, States and the Landscape, paid tribute to the work of Robert McC. Adams. When Adams began publishing in the 1960s, the interdependence of cities and their countrysides, and the information revealed through the spatial patterning of communities, went largely unrecognized. Today, as this useful collection makes clear, these interpretive insights are fundamental to all archaeologists who investigate the roles of complex polities in their landscapes.

Polities and Power features detailed studies from an intentionally disparate array of regions, including Mesoamerica, Andean South America, southwestern Asia, East Africa, and the Indian subcontinent. Each chapter or pair of chapters is followed by a critical commentary. In concert, these studies strive to infer social, political, and economic meaning from archaeologically discerned landscapes associated with societies that incorporate some expression of state authority. The contributions engage a variety of themes, including the significance of landscapes as they condition and reflect complex polities; the interplay of natural and cultural elements in defining landscapes of state; archaeological landscapes as ever-dynamic entities; and archaeological landscapes as recursive structures, reflected in palimpsests of human activity.

Individually, many of these contributions are provocative, even controversial. Taken together, they reveal the contours of landscape archaeology at this particular evolutionary moment.

American Indians and National Parks, by Robert H. Keller, Michael F. Turek

Many national parks and monuments tell unique stories of the struggle between the rights of native peoples and the wants of the dominant society. These stories involve our greatest parks—Yosemite, Yellowstone, Mesa Verde, Glacier, the Grand Canyon, Olympic, Everglades—as well as less celebrated parks elsewhere. In American Indians and National Parks, authors Robert Keller and Michael Turek relate these untold tales of conflict and collaboration. American Indians and National Parks details specific relationships between native peoples and national parks, including land claims, hunting rights, craft sales, cultural interpretation, sacred sites, disposition of cultural artifacts, entrance fees, dams, tourism promotion, water rights, and assistance to tribal parks. Beginning with a historical account of Yosemite and Yellowstone, American Indians and National Parks reveals how the creation of the two oldest parks affected native peoples and set a pattern for the century to follow. Keller and Turek examine the evolution of federal policies toward land preservation and explore provocative issues surrounding park/Indian relations. When has the National Park Service changed its policies and attitudes toward Indian tribes, and why? How have environmental organizations reacted when native demands, such as those of the Havasupai over land claims in the Grand Canyon, seem to threaten a national park? How has the Park Service dealt with native claims to hunting and fishing rights in Glacier, Olympic, and the Everglades? While investigating such questions, the authors traveled extensively in national parks and conducted over 200 interviews with Native Americans, environmentalists, park rangers, and politicians. They meticulously researched materials in archives and libraries, assembling a rich collection of case studies ranging from the 19th century to the present. In American Indians and National Parks, Keller and Turek tackle a significant and complicated subject for the first time, presenting a balanced and detailed account of the Native-American/national-park drama. This book will prove to be an invaluable resource for policymakers, conservationists, historians, park visitors, and others who are concerned about preserving both cultural and natural resources.

Review
Selected as one of the best environmental books for 2001 by planeta.com""One of the best overall views of this subject yet se7en. . . . A well-researched and fascinating history detailing the often-tense relationship between American Indian tribal communities and the massive bureaucracy of the National Park Service." —The Public Historian"Former National Parks Director Russell Dickinson once said that he didn't know of 'a single major national park or monument . . . in the western part of the United States that doesn't have some sort of Indian sacred area.' . . . This study by two scholars of Indian cultures argues against 'the stereotypes of Indian-as-ecologist/Indian-as-victim.' " —Washington Post Book World"Almost every chapter was a surprise and an education. . . . This book causes us to reexamine present-day stereotypes, but it is not so much about Indian stereotypes as it is about the National Park Service and environmental stereotypes. We have long held certain values about wildlands in high esteem, sometimes to the exclusion of the rights of native peoples. Fortunately, this is a trend that is reversing, and American Indians & National Parks also seeks to encourage the progress that is being made. . . . It is the accurate appreciation of these histories and optimism for future successes that make this book a must for any professional working on wilderness preservation issues." —Environmental Practice

Highly recommended contribution to Native American studies.
By Midwest Book Review
Beginning with Yosemite and Yellowstone, American Indians & National Parks explains how the creation of these two oldest national parks affected native peoples and set a pattern followed with the subsequent creations of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore; Canyon de Chelly; Chaco Culture National Historical Park; Death Valley National Monument; Everglades National Park; Glacier National Park; Glen Canyon; Grand Canyon National Park; Mesa Verde National Park; Monument Valley Tribal Park; Navajo National Monument; Olympic National Park; Pipe Spring National Monument; Rainbow Bridge National Monument; and Wupatiki National Monument. Robert Keller and Michael Turek collaborate to show how and why the National Park Service changed its policies and attitudes toward Native American tribes, the response of environmental organizations to native demands, and how the park service dealt with native claims to hunting and fishing rights in Glacier, Olympic, and Everglades National Parks. American Indians & National Parks is a carefully researched, ably presented reference that is highly recommended to students of Native American studies, environmentalists, and National Park Service operatives.

Further light on a subject previously ignored
By Ranger Reub
The National Park Service, throughout most of its history, has treated American Indians as museum pieces suspended in time - colorful, nostalgic versions of environmentalists (239-242). In books about national parks, even as late as 1989, Native Americans were seen as artifacts and scenery more than people. To correct this oversight, Robert Keller and Micheal Turek add a much-needed chapter to Native American history with their book American Indians and National Parks. Keller and Turek explain that the relationship between American Indians and the National Park Service has been one fraught with contradiction and exploitation.

Surprisingly, the official policy of Congress since the 19th century has been to promote American Indians and protect their welfare (18). As in nearly all areas of the United States, the contrary happened to Indians in national parks. Philetus Norris, the second superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, in his order for Indian expulsion, decreed that park land was not Indian country, that Indians feared geysers and that Yellowstone is "for the use and enjoyment of all Americans" (24). Early national park leaders felt pressure to conform to popular ideals of nature. Those perceptions excluded Native Americans, which fell decidedly against the notion that national parks were for the use and enjoyment of all Americans and official Congressional policy. How could national parks claim to be created for the enjoyment all Americans when they shunned the first Americans - American Indians?

Another way Congress's directive towards Native Americans became contradicted was in the National Park Service's presentation of Indian history through its interpretive programs. Mesa Verde National Park's programs exclude Ute history, largely because of ongoing disputes with the tribe over land issues. Interpretation of modern Indian life in national parks has been an afterthought (42). Early park directors and superintendents knew little about natives (28). Native American names abound in national parks, but many of their meanings are mute to visitors. Only in the last 15 years has the NPS increased its awareness and sensitivity towards American Indians, but bitterness still prevails as past wounds slowly heal.

Economic exploitation of national parks even affected Native Americans. Concessionaires used tribal images of the Blackfeet, whose ancestral land became Glacier National Park, in park promotion. Louis Hill, president of the Great Northern Railroad featured images of Blackfeet warriors to proliferate the Indian mystique on the railroad's advertisements, calendars and in lodge décor. Hill hired natives to perform for tourists by drumming, dancing and signing postcards. Hill directed the natives to be friendly, "have good costumes, put on a good show, and live in peace and harmony" (57). The Blackfeet became a living exhibit for park visitors when Hill directed a few tribal families to inhabit teepees on the lawn of the East Glacier Hotel. Even the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) protested such exploitation. Later the BIA compromised by requiring employers utilizing Indians for exhibition purposes to sign contracts and supply the natives with food, transportation and medical care. Once a noble tribe, at the dawn of the twentieth century the Blackfeet surrendered to the encroachments of capitalism and mythic images in what many Americans might consider the most unlikely of places - a National Park.

American Indians and National Parks tells essentially the same story in different locales - Native Americans being exploited and excluded at the hands of American bureaucracy and capitalism. Keller and Turek's narrative is engaging and makes it clear the two are passionate about their subject matter, even to the point of editorializing on occasion and encouraging any reader who so desires to add to the body of work on the natives' relationship with the NPS. The book does suffer from factual misrepresentation, such as identifying Heber J. Grant as a "Mormon bishop" when in actuality he was president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Despite its few shortcomings the volume adds needed depth to a subject previously ignored.

Must Read
By Ron Mader
(Planeta.com Journal) - One of the most influential books this year, this work examines the relationship of parks and Indian cultures. Remarkably, this story has not been well told -- until now. The authors point out that "one can find thousands of books about American Indians, a considerable body of literature about natural parks, but almost nothing linking the two." The book draws on extensive research and more than 200 interviews with Native Americans, environmentalists, park rangers and politicians. It also asks important questions such as what are the obligations owed to those displaced by park creation and do aboriginal people have special rights to their homelands. This book is one of the year's must reads.

Ellul's chilling words may be the price we may for technological progress
By Benjamin Ho
Its almost 30 years since Ellul wrote Betrayal of the West, nevertheless some of his words remain prophetic - chiling to the core. Ellul's thesis is clear: The West and its ideals have been betrayed - ironically by the West itself. The price the West has to pay for progress is the betrayal of the values that brought the West progress. Ellul writes at his passionate best in this book, as one senses his conviction and pain in articulating the decline of Western civilization.

The book is essentially divided into three main categories. In Chapter 1, Ellul starts of by articulating the various reasons the West has had a bad name over the past 200 years (slavery, colonialism etc...). Unlike postmoderns however, Ellul does not buy into the argument upon which many anti-Western advocates take, simply because those who oppose the West - rightly - are only able to do so because of the freedom that the West has originially conferred upon them.

2. In Chapter 2, Ellul enters into a magnificent discourse on the relevancy of the Left, and takes the argument into a never-seen before level with his stunning discussion of why those who are truly betrayed are those who have no means of articulating their sufferings. Terming them as the "truly poor", this group of people include the Tibetans, the Kurds and the Harki tribe in North Africa.

3. Finally Ellul concludes his treatise with his analysis of how the West has been betrayed. This takes place at three levels (and as usual, stamped with the mark of Ellul's originality): i) The Betrayal of Reason of History: The Utopist, the Geometer and the Technician, ii) The Betrayal of the Individual: The Executioner and iii) The Betrayal of Love and Freedom: The Grand Inquisitor...

In Ellul's words:

"Our speed is constantly increasing, and it does not matter whither we are going. We are caught up in the madness and hybris of the dance of death: the important thing is the dance, the saturnalia, the bacchanalia, the lupercalia. We are no longer worried about what will emerge from it or about the void to which it points...there is no goal, nothing transcendent, no value to light the way; the movement is enough"

"Fragmentary theater and deciphered Moliere, poetry without words and music that is sheer noise, destructured language, Lacan, Derrida, and all their second-rate imitators who think that absolute incomprehensibility offers a way out, when in fact we have shut the door on all possibilities and hopes, and have sunk into a resignation that knows no future"

and my personal fav, which sort of sums of the tension of his arguments:

"The West has always claimed to be on the side of David against Goliath, and it continues to make this claim. The difficulty is that the West is now a Goliath, one of the might of the earth, yet it cannot but still judge itself according to its old values"

From School Library Journal
YA-- A master storyteller continues the charming account of his experiences as veterinarian in rural Yorkshire. And although there are more cats and dogs as patients than before, there are plenty of large farm animals to deal with, frequently during the middle of the night. The detailed but succinct descriptions of people, places, and animals are a delight. Herriot's unusual ability to identify individual characters, both human and four-legged, brings them to life--even for the most urban American. The endearing strand weaving all episodes together is the constant devotion of man to animal and animal to man. Chapters are short, the pace is rapid, and the stories are very easy to read--perfect for unmotivated readers. The author's keen sense of humor will bring smiles to the faces of YAs, particularly when he tells a joke on himself. Nonfiction at its most entertaining best.

From Library Journal
Reading Herriot's book is like listening to the stories of a very old friend. Familiar. Comforting. A little repetitious. His stories of veterinary work in the Yorkshire dales ( All Creatures Great and Small , LJ 8/72; All Things Bright and Beautiful , LJ 10/15/74) have brought to many city folk a sense of wonder and an understanding of the life of a country vet and his patients, both human and animal. In this collection, an older and perhaps more tired Herriot struggles with bad - tempered farmers, difficult diagnoses, an assistant who travels with a live badger, and his own pet cats, who will have nothing to do with him. While the stories and settings hark back to his previous works, the humor and spark are missing. The older Herriot struggles to maintain the wonder and merriment of his youth but gets bogged down in the mundane aspects of shopping for a house and seems numbed rather than heartbroken by the death of some of his patients. Demand will warrant multiple copies, but for the first-time Herriot reader, recommend his earlier works. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 5/15/92.
- Debra Schneider, Virginia Henderson Internat. Nursing Lib., Indianapolis
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Smashingly good sequel to the beloved veterinarian's earlier memoirs, and well worth the ten-year wait since The Lord God Made Them All. Although no exact dates are given, Herriot seems to pick up just where he left off, in the 1960's in rural Yorkshire, when veterinary medicine was still a barehanded, rough-and-tumble affair, with farm animals the main patients and infection a constant threat. (Herriot seems to spend half his time slipping on cow turds or with his arm up a cow's vagina, helping a birthing calf see the light of day.) The author's superbly gifted partner, Siegfried, is back, as is Herriot's loving wife, Helen. But the practice has expanded and much of the good feeling here involves two assistants: John Crooks, who goes on to become a world-class vet, and Calum Buchanan, eccentric supreme, who eats ducks with feathers attached and collects a menagerie of badgers, foxes, monkeys, and rabbits before setting out for Papua New Guinea. Herriot buys a house; dresses like a buffoon to save a client's farm; comes down with a dreadful cow disease; tends to our old friend Tricky Woo, Mrs. Pumphrey's spoiled Pekingese; and, in general, sheds his benign presence on a zooful of animals and a zooful of human beings. The milieu is deliciously familiar--``a dirty, dangerous job'' made glorious by ``the whole rich life.'' So is the moral--that love of animals is synonymous with love of human beings, and that there can never be too much of either. Crafted with foxy intelligence and angelic compassion: proof that for a ``vitnery'' in the Yorkshire dales, life is bliss--and bliss, too, for a few hours at least, for happy readers. Marvelous book!
By Spiritual Spinach
This is such a wonderful book, full of warmth and humor. It's a great read because while there's a storyline that runs through it, each chapter is kind of an individual story so you can put down the book for a while if you need to do so. I couldn't put it down very often, though, because the stories are just so good. Many are funny. It's a real pick-me-up book - much like the first four he wrote. I learned so much from reading his books and I really appreciate how much antibiotics and steroids have helped in the world of animal medicine.

Marvelous. Everyone needs a few Herriot books.
By Pat Black
When life gets hard trust him to pick you up. The perfect antidote for a bad day. Each chapter is a separate story so you can read as much as you like at a sitting. The books, though real, give one that sense of nostalgia about a simpler time. Things don't always go well but you're still left with that sense of indomitable courage that life will go on, that we will endure. Dawn will come again.

An excellent reference work
By David Fowler
This is an excellent and very approachable reference for anyone interested in Islam. In a single volume I doubt one could find a better encyclopedia - especially at the price. The scholarship is up-to-date and very solid without being overly technical or geared toward the specialist (though it can certainly be helpful even for that group). In my studies of Islam I have found it invaluable - as it fits a convenient niche market between multi-volume (expensive) specialist encyclopedias and shorter versions that barely scratch the surface or help you move forward. Connected to this last point - each entry includes a short bibliography from which one can explore the topic further; there is also a very helpful lengthy bibliography at the end of the volume. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone interested in Islam.

Brushed by Cedar, Living by the River: Coast Salish Figures of Power, by Crisca Bierwert

A brilliant, experimental ethnography, Brushed by Cedar is destined to change the way anthropologists write about the people they befriend.

Crisca Bierwert has created a fresh poststructural ethnography that offers new insights into Coast Salish cultures. Arguing against the existence of a master narrative, she presents her understanding of these Native American peoples of Washington state and British Columbia, Canada, through poetic bricolage, offering the reader a pastiche of rich cultural images. Bierwert employs postmodern literary and social analyses to examine many aspects of Salish culture: legends and their storytellers; domestic violence; longhouse ceremonies; the importance and power of place; and disputes over fishing rights. Her reflections overlap as a dialogue would, weaving throughout the book significant threads of Salish knowledge and creating a nonauthoritative text that nonetheless speaks knowingly.

This book represents the future of contemporary anthropology. Unlike traditional ethnography, it makes no attempt to portray a complete picture of the Coast Salish. Instead, Bierwert utilizes a critical and diffuse approach that defies colonial, syncretic, and hegemonic structures and applies advanced literary theory to the creation of ethnography.

Brushed by Cedar is an important guideline for anyone who writes about other cultures and will be expecially useful to classes in the methodology and history of ethnography, as well as to scholars specializing in Native American studies or oral literatures.

I probably studied at the U of Washington with this author. I also know some of the people she interviewed and go with whom she got her information. I am Coast Salish Native American and at a very early age we were taught not to talk about most of the subjects she brings out in her book. Not that it wrong, but that it could easily by misunderstood and/or misinterpreted. My view is that the author just took advantage of the people and published for whatever reason.

Human Trafficking (Global Issues (Facts on File)), by Kathryn Cullen-DuPont

Human Trafficking provides a thorough and much-needed examination of this controversial and timely topic. It describes the suffering caused by human trafficking as well as the financial, cultural, and other conditions that make trafficking within national borders and between far-flung "origin" and "destination" countries possible. The efforts of the United Nations, national governments, and non-governmental organizations to combat human trafficking are thoroughly discussed, as are efforts to provide direct aid to the individual victims of human trafficking. This new title examines how human trafficking is conducted in the United States, the Netherlands, Nigeria, India, and Belize. Each case study analyzes the patterns of trade and types of exploitation, the reasons countries have failed to halt human trafficking, and the steps taken by governments and organizations to reduce trafficking.

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up—Cullen-DuPont provides a thorough discussion of modern-day slavery, also known as human trafficking. The book meticulously defines the term and outlines the problem both globally and domestically. Efforts of the United Nations and other nonprofit organizations to address the issues of labor and sexual servitude are discussed. The author sheds light on how the trade in humans continues despite the attempt of governments to thwart it. A section on primary sources includes passages from official documents citing cases and quotes from victims, while the final section offers suggestions on how to research the topic, along with useful charts, statistics (annotated), organizational listings, and a substantial, up-to-date, thematic bibliography. This is an invaluable resource, but it will best serve students in Advanced Placement classes. Other students may find Joyce Hart's Human Trafficking (Rosen, 2009) of more use.—Richelle Roth, Boone County Public Library, KY
