This is one of my favorite books of all time
By honest_and_accurate
This is one of my favorite books of all time. I have read it twice already! The Desire of Ages itself is amazing but what's nice about this version is that Jerry D. Thomas simplifies and updates some of the language so that the book reads how we would speak currently as opposed to some of the outdated speech of the original book. The original book is still enjoyable but this one is amazing for giving to young people and those that are just starting to do devotionals.

Features I especially like:
1. Memory verse at the beginning of each chapter.
2. Gold bar at the bottom of the page showing all the scripture that each chapter covers.
3. The amount of detail and context that each chapter gives for the events that happened in Jesus' life and ministry.
4. How the book is able to cover all four gospels, Matthew/Mark/Luke/John, in chronological order in one book while highlighting all the details of each individual book. My understanding of Christ's life is so much better after reading this book.
5. Large print that makes the book easy to read.
6. Beautiful cover.
7. Chapters are only 1 to 3 pages long which is perfect for a busy individual or family.
8. Written in a devotional book style.
9. Great for doing morning or evening devotions as a couple or family.
10. Long enough to be enjoyable yet short enough to not feel overwhelming for those "non-readers" in your family.

I purchased this copy for my brother and I've probably given out several thousand of this book so far. You can trust me when I say you will LOVE this book!

Easier to read format/version of the Desire of Ages.
By George Wade
May of Peace is an exciting way to read the Desire of Ages. It is a digest version, large enough paper on a brighter paper. 8 1/2 x 11 format so the chapters feel shorter (and probably are since it's a digest). Pictures help. Text may be slightly less Victorian. A great book. I have given out over 20 to friends and have accumulated another nearly 20 to give again. The author amplifies the New Testament story of Jesus from her intimate knowledge of the prophecies about Jesus in the Old Testament.

Massacre at the Yuma Crossing: Spanish Relations with the Quechans, 1779-1782, by Mark Santiago

"The quiet of the dawn was rent by the screams of war. Scores, perhaps hundreds, of Quechan and Mohave warriors leaped from concealment, rushing the plaza from all sides. Painted for battle and brandishing lances, bows, and war clubs, the Indians killed every Spaniard they could catch."

The route from the Spanish presidial settlements in upper Sonora to the Colorado River was called the Camino del Diablo, the "Road of the Devil." Running through the harshest of deserts, this route was the only way for the Spanish to transport goods overland to their settlements in California. At the end of the route lay the only passable part of the lower Colorado, and the people who lived around the river, the Yumas or Quechans, initially joined into a peaceful union with the Spanish. When the relationship soured and the Yumas revolted in 1781, it essentially ended Spanish settlement in the area, dashed the dreams of the mission builders, and limited Spanish expansion into California and beyond.

In Massacre at the Yuma Crossing, Mark Santiago introduces us to the important and colorful actors involved in the dramatic revolt of 1781: Padre Francisco Garcés, who discovered a path from Sonora to California, made contact with the Yumas and eventually became their priest; Salvador Palma, the informal leader of the Yuman people, whose decision to negotiate with the Spanish earned him a reputation as a peacebuilder in the region, which eventually caused his downfall; and Teodoro de Croix, the Spanish commandant-general, who, breaking with traditional settlement practice, established two pueblos among the Quechans without an adequate garrison or mission, thereby leaving the settlers without any sort of defense when the revolt finally took place.

Massacre at the Yuma Crossing not only tells the story of the Yuma Massacre with new details but also gives the reader an understanding of the pressing questions debated in the Spanish Empire at the time: What was the efficacy of the presidios? How extensive should the power of the Catholic mission priests be? And what would be the future of Spain in North America?

Arizona: A History, Revised Edition (Southwest Center Series), by Thomas E. Sheridan

Hailed as a model state history thanks to Thomas E. Sheridan's thoughtful analysis and lively interpretation of the people and events shaping the Grand Canyon State, Arizona has become a standard in the field. Now, just in time for Arizona's centennial, Sheridan has revised and expanded this already top-tier state history to incorporate events and changes that have taken place in recent years. Addressing contemporary issues like land use, water rights, dramatic population increases, suburban sprawl, and the US-Mexico border, the new material makes the book more essential than ever. It successfully places the forty-eighth state's history within the context of national and global events. No other book on Arizona history is as integrative or comprehensive.

From stone spear points more than 10,000 years old to the boom and bust of the housing market in the first decade of this century, Arizona: A History explores the ways in which Native Americans, Hispanics, African Americans, Asians, and Anglos have inhabited and exploited Arizona. Sheridan, a life-long resident of the state, puts forth new ideas about what a history should be, embracing a holistic view of the region and shattering the artificial line between prehistory and history. Other works on Arizona's history focus on government, business, or natural resources, but this is the only book to meld the ethnic and cultural complexities of the state's history into the main flow of the story.

A must read for anyone interested in Arizona's past or present, this extensive revision of the classic work will appeal to students, scholars, and general readers alike.

From the Inside Flap
Thomas E. Sheridan has spent a lifetime in Arizona, "living off it and seeking refuge from it." He knows firsthand its canyons, forests, and deserts; he has seen its cities exploding with new growth; and, like many other people, he sometimes fears for its future.
In this book, Sheridan sets forth new ideas about what a history should be. "Arizona: A History" explores the ways in which Native Americans, Hispanics, and Anglos have inhabited and exploited Arizona from the pursuit of the Naco mammoth 11,000 years ago to the financial adventurism of Charles Keating and others today. It also examines how perceptions of Arizona have changed, creating new constituencies of tourists, environmentalists, and outside business interests to challenge the dominance of ranchers, mining companies, and farmers who used to control the state. Sheridan emphasizes the crucial role of the federal government in Arizona's development throughout the book.
As Sheridan writes about the past, his eyes are on the inevitable change and compromise of the present and future. He balances the gains and losses as global forces interact more and more with local cultural and environmental factors.

Sheridan emphasizes the crucial role of the federal government in Arizona's development throughout the book.

Long Awaited History of a State
By Brian Wayne Wells
Ever since the 1970's I have been seriously attempting to collect the histories of all the States of the Union. One state history that seemed totally unavailable, was Arizona. So it was with considerable enthusiam that I noted Thomas Sheridan's new history of Arizona that came out in 2012. I had always been attracted by Arizona and the southwest generally. I fancied that the movie of the Louis L'Amour book, "Conagher" as being set in Arizona, although it could have taken place anywhere in the southwest from Texas to California.

I have always had the idea of retiring to Arizona. Consequently, I read his book as a history of my future home. It is truly a long way from the "old west" portrayed in movies to the modern state of Arizona. This book helped fill in that long gap with an explanation of the Building of the Tonto (roosevelt) Dam, the resultant great and temporary cotton boom during World War I in Arizona, and the rise of post-World War II Arizona. The book cvontinues right down to the present and explains the events surrounding the controversial legislative act --S.B. 1070.

Thomas Sheridan writes a story as exciting as a novel as he accurately tells the history of this beautifaul state.

Environmentalism in Popular Culture: Gender, Race, Sexuality, and the Politics of the Natural, by Noël Sturgeon

In this thoughtful and highly readable book, Noël Sturgeon illustrates the myriad and insidious ways in which American popular culture depicts social inequities as “natural” and how our images of “nature” interfere with creating solutions to environmental problems that are just and fair for all. Why is it, she wonders, that environmentalist messages in popular culture so often “naturalize” themes of heroic male violence, suburban nuclear family structures, and U.S. dominance in the world? And what do these patterns of thought mean for how we envision environmental solutions, like “green” businesses, recycling programs, and the protection of threatened species?

Although there are other books that examine questions of culture and environment, this is the first book to employ a global feminist environmental justice analysis to focus on how racial inequality, gendered patterns of work, and heteronormative ideas about the family relate to environmental questions. Beginning in the late 1980s and moving to the present day, Sturgeon unpacks a variety of cultural tropes, including ideas about Mother Nature, the purity of the natural, and the allegedly close relationships of indigenous people with the natural world. She investigates the persistence of the “myth of the frontier” and its extension to the frontier of space exploration. She ponders the popularity (and occasional controversy) of penguins (and penguin family values) and questions assumptions about human warfare as “natural.”

The book is intended to provoke debates—among college students and graduate students, among their professors, among environmental activists, and among all citizens who are concerned with issues of environmental quality and social equality.

Review
“Sturgeon’s book creates the field of ‘environmental cultural studies’ through her intersectional analysis, which merges the perspectives of environmental justice, ecofeminism, and environmentalism.” —Greta Gaard, author of The Nature of Home: Taking Root in a Place

“If environmentalists—and by this I mean all of us who live on the planet and rely upon nature for our very survival—can take these criticisms to heart and try to imagine a more sustainable social and ecological future, then this book’s seemingly grim assessments will have paid off.” —Scott Slovic, author of Going Away to Think: Engagement, Retreat, and Ecocritical Responsibility

About the Author
Noël Sturgeon is a professor of Women's Studies at Washington State University. She is the author of Ecofeminist Natures: Race, Gender, Feminist Theory, and Political Action.

Book Review: Environmentalism in Popular Culture
By Samuel Day Fassbinder
When I was a university student in the '80s and '90s, I got to observe firsthand the growth in popularity of a field loosely known as "cultural studies," with its promotion of a "new" field of political inquiry which it called "identity politics." As a prospective graduate student, I was accepted into a department which advertised its practice of what it called "critical/cultural studies." So I was at least familiar with cultural studies as an academic trend. Later in life, I became more focused upon environmental topics.

Noel Sturgeon's "Environmentalism in Popular Culture" has combined the "cultural studies" and environmentalist interests in an interesting, politically-committed book. This book is subtitled "Gender, Race, Sexuality, and the Politics of the Natural," which should tell you a good amount about its proclaimed method: "global feminist environmental justice analysis." Sturgeon's central idea is that

US environmentalists use popular narrative tropes to get their message across in ways that they think will be widely effective. But they do not often critically examine what relationship these stories have to the long-standing use of arguments from the natural that have promoted inequality and supported conquest throughout US political and social history. It is crucial, therefore, to examine the negative implications and effects of environmentalist deployment of certain narratives about nature, given that some of these narratives are simultaneously used to uphold troubling ideas about US power, heterosexist and sexist concepts of families and sexuality, and racist ideas about indigenous and Global South peoples. (7)

Thus what follows in the rest of this book is a sort of mythography of these "popular narrative tropes." In constructing this mythography, Sturgeon examines a wide variety of different media presentations: from advertising pitches (which employ "environmental" tropes) to films ("King Kong," "Dances With Wolves, "Hidalgo") to science fiction ("2001: A Space Odyssey," "The Day After Tomorrow") to Disney movies for children to specifically environmentalist nonfiction such as "An Inconvenient Truth."

The tropes that Sturgeon selects for her analysis are probably the most important part of this book. Sturgeon reveals the American "frontier" myth as persisting past the close of the actual physical frontier, and two iconic figures stand out as emblems of this "frontier" myth. The first is the trope of the Ecological Indian, who is both Pocahontas (Disney version) and Iron Eyes Cody in the famous "Keep America Beautiful" antilittering ad campaign in the '70s. The Ecological Indian is a symbol of pristine purity, untainted by the ugly realities of imperialism but still standing (in a symbolic, unreal sense) against the imperialists. The other "frontier" myth is that of space exploration as a benign form of colonialism, as reflected in space opera. There are, of course, plenty of examples of each of these "frontier" myths.

The "frontier myth," here, is of course a justification of the imperialist conquest of the Old West, though in the modern era such a myth is given an environmentalist twist as the "Ecological Indian," the myth of Native American purity, now presumably deceased, which is ostensibly re-dramatized in order to sponsor the preservation of nature without really getting the "White Man" to substantially change his ways.

The space exploration myth is here used to explore the connection between the "frontier" attitude of science fiction writers, and Reagan's "Strategic Defense Initiative" for the militarization of space, which contributes to the population of near-Earth orbit with lots of "space junk," dangerous debris moving quickly in high-Earth orbit. Militarized "wastelands" in space are said to be analogues of previous militarized wastelands on Earth.

When Sturgeon reflects upon children's movies (and other texts), she considers "superhero" narratives of "saving the Earth" which do not consider the corporate/ government "business as usual" context in which the Earth (really, ecosystem complexity) is in fact endangered.

An interlude in this book about polar environments, both North and South, dramatizes the extent to which penguins are (in movie narratives in "The March of the Penguins" and "Happy Feet"), depicted as "popular symbols that conflate heterosexist family values and the need to resist environmental threats" (136), and another movie, about northern polar locals, which examines the real relations between abrupt climate change and the disappearance of sophisticated ways of "living off the land" among indigenous people living in the Arctic Circle area.

Ultimately Sturgeon wishes to transition readers from social critiques of media images to a systematic critique of "the metabolism of man and nature" (to borrow Marx's phrase). She hopes that environmentalism will "move beyond individual modifications of ways of living to address the systematic, institutionalized structures that maintain inequality and promote environmental devastation." (182)

But these structures are not really addressed here, not to the extent to which we can understand the hypertrophy in "the metabolism of man and nature." Sturgeon is too busy trying to bring identity politics into the conversation, and in doing so, she critiques media participation in mythic structures which have contributed to environmental devastation (e.g. the suburban nuclear family, the colonial frontier). Indeed, we would do well to reject such mythic structures, and to know them when we see them in the mass media.

Mass media hopes that we might "save the Earth," however, were never anything but a fiction. Sturgeon is in a bit of a rush to proclaim that the critiques of racism, sexism, and heterosexism have a contribution to make to the critique of "the metabolism of man and nature" under capitalist, industrial conditions, without specifying too carefully what that latter critique really is. Perhaps we are intended to find out about metabolic critique by reading other books. Many of my previous diaries here are about the metabolic critique of capitalism, incl. book reviews. Certainly Sturgeon has been reading titles on much of that list -- she's got Joan Martinez-Alier prominently on her reading list, for instance.

Even so, books such as Sturgeon's are fun to read. Previous books on "green" criticism have gotten bogged down in lengthy lists of categories: this one moves carefully from cultural reference to cultural reference in ways which really entertain the reader while inviting her to think carefully about her exposure to entertainment industry messages. Recommended.

Stunning
By Ernesto Aguilar
Environmentalism in Popular Culture is a necessary challenge of ideas many of us may look upon with positive energy, but which require be pushed further. Equally, Sturgeon scripts a thought-provoking thesis on how ideas of personal responsibility and individualism have eclipsed ideas of corporate responsibility and social accountability, mainly through persistent messaging presupposing the righteousness of the unregulated free market and the inherent danger of anything approaching the commons as a Communist fantasy.

This volume offers up an appraisal of green business that should be fundamental to anyone's understanding of such evolutions in capital. Benevolence comes with it many hooks, and Environmentalism in Popular Culture unabashedly calls out the cynicism in which some of the noted benevolence is rooted. Sturgeon is furthermore clear in how North American chauvinism colors green business' interactions with the Third World, presupposing at once mysticism and helplessness, while failing to offer a lens to Western dominance for such happenings. The result of these ideologies coming to roost is soft capital, in the form of green business, partners with the hardline factions of globalization to present suffering as the natural order of life. Individuals, as the logic goes, are alone responsible for their own lot, not the governments and corporations which engineered societies to their own benefit. Enter theories that are but a hair more sophisticated than eugenics and one is left with the lucky, the cunning and the strong flourishing in a world where regulation is scorned as a roadblock to money rather than a guard for the public interest. What's more, a focus on individuals simply recycling, buying green and purchasing hybrid cars eludes what Sturgeon calls "social justice in a global context."

The Frontier as Zane Grey knew it
By Charles Wheeler
This short story collection combines both fiction and non-fiction material spread over a period of 60 years from earliest publication date to the last story published. One can only wonder why it took so long for some of them to be published. The diverse elements and range of the stories can also be found, extending from Death Valley to the movie set of Hollywood, to the coast of Australia; but in what ever region or setting, Zane Grey gives the reader the feeling he is there with his colorful descriptions and detailed nuances of speech and action. The title story, The Westerners, is typical Zane Grey, with a touch of the outlandish. I suppose that is because the story takes place in Reno, Nevada in the 1930's and involves a marriage and a divorce the daughter of the couple involved wants to stop in any way she can. So, easterner Katherine Hempstead enlists the aid of cowboy Phil Cameron to stop the proceedings by, shall we say, unusual methods. You have to read it to beleive it. The non-fiction story, Death Valley, relates a hike Zane Grey took across the floor of Death Valley in January 1919. One of many such trips he would make in preparation of writing Wanderer of the Wasteland. It is a marvelous and detailed step by step account of his adventure in this valley of death, and the perils and dangers he faced in doing this. Zane Grey's descriptive qualites and powerful imagery of land and sky and mountain are unsurpassed by any author; and he tells a good story too. Get this collection for yourself.

Review
". . .sets forth in the clearest possible manner the view of American expansion which has inspired and illuminated all of Professor Turner's work from the beginning. Among all American historians no one has so fully caught the meaning of the frontier in our national development."—American Review of Books"Makes an excellent general presentation of a subject which is insufficiently understood by the average American, yet is so fascinating that any reader will be thankful to have it brought to his attention."—Springfield Republican

Interesting perspective on the evolution of the American psyche
By Robert
I found this essay from a quotation in "The Case for Mars," by Robert Zubrin. Following FJT's thesis, the explanation for why Americans are persistent in sending humans to space is that it is our nature (because of the frontier... read the essay to find out more). After developing the American frontier, without another terrestrial frontier for expansion, space is our next destination. Of course, we also find more abstract frontiers to explore e.g. biology, aerospace, technology, transportation, medicine...

Amazing, true stories. Stories that tell of marvelous divine interventions. Maybe you thought miracles only happened in Bible times! This book proves that miracles do happen even today . . . Suddenly Kathy awoke She felt a nudge and a voice whisper, "Go check the back door." She glanced at the clock-- nearly 2:00 a.m. Automatically she arose, slipped downstairs, and tiptoed to the back door. Realizing how exhausted she felt, she thought, This is nuts! No reason to go to the back door--maybe the front door. No, I'm too tired, she told herself, turned, and headed upstairs. Again--an unseen hand--urgent this time, turned her back toward the garage door. "Check the back door NOW! " The commanding but quiet voice urged. This time she didn't argue. She swung open the back door. Orange flames leapt and danced toward her. Thick black smoke filled the entire garage. This story, and many more like it will refresh your faith and remind you of God's never-ending presence and love.

Truly, Down to earth everyday miracles!
By A Customer
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to read and share truly down to earth stories of miracles. The stories in this book are about ordinary people like you and me and the wonderful, unexplainable things that happen to us. Some things just cannot be written off as a "coincidence". We know, deep in our soul, it was indeed an answer from heaven. The stories in this book are perfect for anyone who is skeptical about reading experiences of angels, miracles, and answered prayers. These are miracles that can happen to anyone, and I believe, after reading this book, most of us can reflect back to similar situations where we ourselves did indeed experience a miracle. It may be a small miracle for some, but to us a miracle is a miracle. That is what the beauty of this book is. The stories can make anyone, even unbelievers, think twice about questioning whether certain events in their life was a "coincidence", or nothing short than a plain and simple miracle! A great, easy to read, book for anyone who wants to read about simple stories that happen to everyday people, but feel are too samll to talk about. Yet, they are not too samll. They are indeed miracles, angels and answered prayers.

Older Book But Timeless Stories of Miracles
By luv2read
This was an easy read. There are good stories to very amazing, classic stories that I will want to remember and use as child's story at church. It is written in an easy to read format. Some are about situations where we tend to think they are coincidences that they turned out and other are truly shocking and jaw-dropping. My favorite is about the water buffalo that told the farmer the "End is Near" and it resulted in his family going to religious meetings and changing their lives.
