About the Author
Demetria Martínez is the author of the novel Mother Tongue, which won the 1994 Western States Book Award for fiction. She writes a national monthly column for the National Catholic Reporter and is involved in the Arizona Border Rights Project, which documents abuses by the U.S. Border Patrol. She lives in Tucson.

Just as human rights advocates have tended to place only civil and political rights onto their agendas, environmentalists have tended to focus primarily on natural resource preservation without addressing human impacts of environmental abuse.  As a result, victims of environmental degradation are unprotected by the laws and mechanisms established to address human rights abuses.    

This book brings together contributions from human rights and environmental experts who have devoted much of their work to unifying these two spheres, particularly in the legal arena.  It presents a variety of issues and approaches that address human rights and environmental links, demonstrating the growing interrelationship between human rights law and environmental advocacy. Its coverage includes reviews of existing international laws and treaties that establish the rights to a healthy environment, an overview of mechanisms that allow both individuals and groups to seek remedy for abuses, and specific cases that document efforts to seek redress for victims of environmental degradation through existing human rights protection mechanisms.

A Good Read

What I like about this book is that the authors do not waste any time at the outset trying to find a rhythm and direction to the narrative. They immediately jump in and tell us there are questions to whether she is adopted or not along with some quick observations of episodes of her youth. They try to make the entire 247 pages as objective a narrative as possible.

The most obvious underlying theme is that there is no story without mentioning Ronald Reagan as often as possible. We get as much a biography of him as her. In fact, this book cannot have been cut to half the size otherwise. And that's the point- she isn't a glamour puss and cannot be sold that way to movie fans. She fights the battle for leading lady roles but let's face it- movie fans want to look at someone pleasant if that actor is to carry the movie. One of her better movies that I recall watching is with Bing Crosby. Why?- because he is not a glamour puss, either. You cannot put her opposite Cary Grant and expect anyone to believe he would fall in love with her.

It's worth the read to get a good perspective just as much about President Reagan's first career as about Wyman's. Compactly put together without the authors getting in the way. Enjoy!

Poorly written

What a disappointing book. This is nothing more than a chronological listing of events in Jane Wyman's life - her marriages, children, movies, television, etc. There's nothing here that you couldn't get from reading Wikipedia or IMDB. She appears to have been a very private person who hated discussing her off-screen life and kept everything to herself.

The book offers no explanations for, or insight into, her decisions or actions. No one, not even Jane Wyman, was interviewed for this book; instead, the authors sprinkled in short, previously-published quotes that make her sound like a completely humorless and cold control-freak. She was a talented actress, but, apparently, not a nice one.

A Long Day's Journey

Whether it be in his essays, his poems, or his prose, Wendell Berry has proved himself time and again to be an observant and intelligent writer about life. Having read nearly all of the Port William stories and novels, I came to "The Memory of Old Jack" already somewhat familiar with the main character's life, ready to know more about this model of a man who has played such an integral role in the life of one town.

"The Memory of Old Jack" unfolds over the last day of Jack Beechum's life, in September of 1952. Now an old man who doesn't want to feel himself a burden to anyone, he has moved off his farm and taken up residence at the local hotel for the last eight years of his life. He finds that he cannot stay in the present for long; his mind is so overwhelmed with the memories and losses of his past, that he finds himself almost constantly drifting back in time, reliving the best and the worst all over again. Yet the memory mentioned in the title does not belong to Old Jack alone, but to everyone who has been blessed to know him; even after Jack passes, the memory of him and all his quirks will live on in those who preserve his ways.

Reading the stories that Wendell Berry has crafted about the town of Port William is like returning home. They are double-edged odes to a simpler time and way of life, at once longing and hopeful, sorrowful and happy. They are also an investment; Berry's stories are usually slow in unfolding, weaving back and forth between past and present, the edges of time blurring in the reader's mind. Yet every trip to this imagined town is more than worth it, every word drawing life from fiction, each memory a finely crafted work of art.
