Mining, the Environment, and Indigenous Development Conflicts, by Saleem H. Ali

From sun-baked Black Mesa to the icy coast of Labrador, native lands for decades have endured mining ventures that have only lately been subject to environmental laws and a recognition of treaty rights. Yet conflicts surrounding mining development and indigenous peoples continue to challenge policy-makers.

This book gets to the heart of resource conflicts and environmental impact assessment by asking why indigenous communities support environmental causes in some cases of mining development but not in others. Saleem Ali examines environmental conflicts between mining companies and indigenous communities and with rare objectivity offers a comparative study of the factors leading to those conflicts.

Mining, the Environment, and Indigenous Development Conflicts presents four cases from the United States and Canada: the Navajos and Hopis with Peabody Coal in Arizona; the Chippewas with the Crandon Mine proposal in Wisconsin; the Chipewyan Inuits, Déné and Cree with Cameco in Saskatchewan; and the Innu and Inuits with Inco in Labrador. These cases exemplify different historical relationships with government and industry and provide an instance of high and low levels of Native resistance in each country. Through these cases, Ali analyzes why and under what circumstances tribes agree to negotiated mining agreements on their lands, and why some negotiations are successful and others not.

Ali challenges conventional theories of conflict based on economic or environmental cost-benefit analysis, which do not fully capture the dynamics of resistance. He proposes that the underlying issue has less to do with environmental concerns than with sovereignty, which often complicates relationships between tribes and environmental organizations. Activist groups, he observes, fail to understand such tribal concerns and often have problems working with tribes on issues where they may presume a common environmental interest.

This book goes beyond popular perceptions of environmentalism to provide a detailed picture of how and when the concerns of industry, society, and tribal governments may converge and when they conflict. As demands for domestic energy exploration increase, it offers clear guidance for such endeavors when native lands are involved.

Review
"It is refreshing to find a strong work grounded in social science theory that is also engaging for casual readers."—Montana, the Magazine of Western History

"The signifcant presence of valuable resources on native land and the importance of mining and mineral extraction to economic development in native communities underscore the need to understand how development projects can be planned in an economially efficient and environmentally sound manner... Given the relatively sparse research comparing U.S. tribal governments and Canadian indigenous groups in the area of mining development, this is an important contribution to our understanding of the factors influencing decision making among these groups in both nations."—Ken Pepion, Harvard University Native American Studies Program

Surprisingly Brilliant - A Work of Art
By Mark D Burgh
I'm a literary snob, I'll admit it. I've read all the classics, and I even know some Literary Theory. Gone With the Wind? Pul-lease, racist, sexist, revanchist trash, made popular by all the young woman dreaming of being Scarlett and having both their Rhett and Ashley. Cheerleader fare. Escapist. WRONG!
Gone with the Wind is an American War & Peace. This is serious literature, which won the Pulitzer prize, no less. Most people don't see past the epic plot (which isn't as cut and dried as you may think) or the love story, but this is no less than a successfull attempt to reclaim a discarded culture. It is not about crinoline and lace, it it about the Apocalypse and how losers of the counter-revolution must learn to live in a place where all their politics, personal or civil, are demolished. Scarlett O'Hara is popular because she is an American, driven, materialistic, sentimental and utterly ruthless. Rhett Bulter is the tragic character of this book; the way of life and ideals he disdained are killing him, and he suffers like no one else in this post-apocalyptic landscape. His departure at the end is an act of contrition as much as a romantic failure; he had tried to recreate the materialism of the ante-bellum world, but negeclected the spirituality (such as it is) of men like Ashley Wilkes. Both men, the dreamer and the realist end up alone in a very sterile place. This book is proto-feminist as well. Scarlett survives, even as everything around her dies, but in the end, she too is alone.
Don't dumb this masterpiece down. The movie fails to capture even a tenth of the depth here. And that awful sequel! Caused by the mistake that this book is some kind of romance novel. This is Art, and you can't stick a new ending on it, any more than you can a great painting or musical composition.

The BEST

I've read GWTW many times -once you get going you can't stop! I once gave a copy to a friend to read -she said it was 'too old fashioned' oh well her loss. I'm glad I'm in the company of true 'Windies' so I thought I'd share with you some interesting facts about the book: -Scarlett was originally named Pansy
-Scarlett was partly based on Mitchell herself and her grandmother
-Rhett was based on Mitchell's first husband Red Upshaw
-the initials JRM in her dedication refer to her second husband John Reginald Marsh
-Margaret Mitchell maintained the only character taken from real life was Prissy the maid
-When asked who she'd like to be in the movie version, Mitchell said 'Prissy'
-Like a detective novelist, Mitchell wrote the last chapter first and the first chapter last
-GWTW is the only book to sell more copies than the bible
-Mitchell nearly went blind just proofreading the manuscript!
-Mitchell scrupously researched every detail for GWTW, even going to the town register to ensure there was no Rhett Butler or Scarlett O'Hara alive during the Civil War
-The novel took ten years to complete, most of it was written in three
-For style, she endeavoured to make her prose so that a five-year old could read it
-If she were ever to write a sequel, it would be called 'Back With the Breeze' On that note, please avoid the Ripley penned sequel 'Scarlett', it is atrocious.
-Gone with the Wind is my favourite book of all time, and yours too, I hope. Enjoy!

One word --- WOW!!!!
By Misfit
I would give this 10 stars if I could. I haven't read this since I was a young girl in the early 70's and should never have waited so long to read it again. The characters were exceptionally well drawn, the dialogue was brilliant, particularly between Rhett (SIGH!) and Scarlett. I swear there was sparks flying off the pages. I am going to miss the people I will have to put behind me now that the book has come to an end, Rhett (SIGH), Scarlett, Mammy, Prissy and Aunt Pitty Pat (LOL).

The author's use of prose was beautiful, all the scenes and action came alive for me. Some people seem to be offended by the racism in the book, but that's how things were back then. Sugar coating it would have ruined the story reducing it to a Harlequin romance.

This is an incredibly well written book about the death of a civilization and the struggles to survive in the new era. This is a book that should not be missed, particulary those who enjoy historical fiction.

Border People: Life and Society in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands, by Oscar J. Martínez

While the U.S.-Mexico borderlands resemble border regions in other parts of the world, nowhere else do so many millions of people from two dissimilar nations live in such close proximity and interact with each other so intensely. Borderlanders are singular in their history, outlook, and behavior, and their lifestyle deviates from the norms of central Mexico and the interior United States; yet these Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and Anglo-Americans also differ among themselves, and within each group may be found cross-border consumers, commuters, and people who are inclined or disinclined to embrace both cultures. Based on firsthand interviews with individuals from all walks of life, Border People presents case histories of transnational interaction and transculturation, and addresses the themes of cross-border migration, interdependence, labor, border management, ethnic confrontation, cultural fusion, and social activism. Here migrants and workers, functionaries and activists, and "mixers" who have crossed cultural boundaries recall events in their lives related to life on the border. Their stories show how their lives have been shaped by the borderlands milieu and how they have responded to the situations they have faced. Border People shows that these borderlanders live in a unique human environment shaped by physical distance from central areas and constant exposure to transnational processes. The oral histories contained here reveal, to a degree that no scholarly analysis can, that borderlanders are indeed people, each with his or her own individual perspective, hopes, and dreams.

From Library Journal
Martinez (history, Univ. of Arizona) used both academic training and personal experiences to produce this treatise on the U.S.-Mexico border. Much more scholarly than other recent accounts of border life, such as Luis Urrea's Across the Wire ( LJ 1/93) or William Langewiesche's Cutting for Sign ( LJ 12/93), Martinez's book categorizes border residents according to their ethnicity, attitudes, place of residence, and levels of interaction with other residents and uses this analysis to further our understanding of what happens on the border and why. He incorporates excerpts from oral histories taken over the past 20 years. Also included are charts and graphs, footnotes, and an extensive bibliography. Recommended for academic libraries.

From Booklist
Mart{¡}inez's close-up look at activity along the volatile border is actually two books in one. The first part is a thematic treatise, complete with charts and graphs, comparing the U.S.-Mexico border with other historical borders in similar situations (in other words, the countries are at peace, but there is still much unwelcome border crossing). The second part is of much more interest to the layperson, featuring interviews with border residents. Mart{¡}inez takes great pains to categorize the many types of people (Mexican American, Anglo American, etc.) that inhabit sister cities like El Paso/Ciudad Ju{ }arez, Laredo/Nuevo Laredo, and San Diego/Tijuana, as well as more rural border residents. The most fascinating parts of this well-presented book are the interviews with all types of border people, including those who've tried to cross illegally (one man estimates being caught by immigration officials five times in one day) and many women who've had to endure harsh treatment while living in Mexico and legally working in the U.S. In all, Mart{¡}inez has extensively covered one of America's most historically pressing concerns, and has done it with dignity and humanity for those both north and south of the border. Joe Collins

Review
"The most fascinating parts of this well-presented book are the interviews with all types of border people (one man estimates being caught by immigration officials five times in one day) and many women who've had to endure harsh treatment while living in Mexico and legally working in the U.S. In all, Martínez has extensively covered one of America's most historically pressing concerns, and has done it with dignity and humanity for those both north and south of the border." —Booklist"The book is enjoyable to read and it certainly makes a powerful point about the peculiar nature of border areas. . . . The use of both case studies and life histories is well mastered by the author. The contrast of the use of both in the same book shows its versatillity." —The Latin American Anthropology Review"Martinez's book is a succinct, clear, engrossing and well-written analysis within a historical and international perspective. . . . An important contribution to our understanding of the area." —International Migration Review"An important, insightful, and thought-provoking work by a first rate scholar who is not afraid to try creative approaches in order to shed new light on a complex and fascinating subject." —Journal of Geography

Colorful Real-Life Stories
By JWW
Granted this book is highly original in its conceptualization, methodology, and presentation; Dr. Martinez is well known for his research on the borderlands. What I liked best were the typologies of different border types of people and their oral history interviews. The reader meets some of the most colorful folks imaginable. For me the most memorable character is "Father Rad," a truly genuine servant of God whose sincerety and outgoing nature helped him to overcome classic cultural barriers on the border. It's a "must read" for any one interested in learning more about the border experience.

Out-of-date and flawed analysis of the U.S.-Mexican border
By A Customer
Although I used this text in my Border Issues class for one semester, several years ago, I quickly discarded it. Stripped to its base, Martinez's topology of border society rests on an unreconstructed version of Wallerstein's core/periphery theory of development, with societies of the advanced industrial nations at the core and those of the Third World at the periphery. Global flows of Third World economic migrants have made sections of the "core," such as Los Angeles, almost indistinguish- able from Guadlajara or Mexico City, while massive programs of technology transfer to hi-tech, low-wage maquiladoras have rendered dichtomies of early World Systems categories moot. So, to build a conceptualization of a rapidly changing and expanding border area (bodies, telecommunications and infrastructure) around obsolete theoretical assumptions invites problems. And the limits of the book are shaped by such problems.

Excellent interpretation of border life.
By A Customer
I have lived on the El Paso/Ciudad Juarez border for over 30 years and have many friends in both countries. I find Dr. Martinez' interpretations very helpful in my day-to-day professional activities, especially in binational relations. I understand that, apart from academics, other groups such as health professionals and clergy use this book for their borderwide training. I recommend this book to anyone who really wants to understand the border.

"This qualitative ethnobotanical study is an excellent example of interdisciplinary research on traditional plant knowledge of a hunting, gathering, and seafaring people."—Economic Botany

About the Author
Richard S. Felger has published extensively on desert plants, their uses, and new food crops around the world. His field of expertise is the flora and economic botany of the Sonoran Desert region. He has studied the relationship between the Seri Indians and the plants and animals in their region of northwestern Mexico for more than two decades. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona and in 1980 was appointed a research scientist at the Office of Arid Lands Studies, University of Arizona.

Mary Beck Moser began studying the Seri language in the early 1950s when she and her husband, the late Edward W. Moser, made their home in the Seri village of El Desemboque. Working with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, she wrote a number of linguistic and anthropological papers and completed her husband's translation of the New Testament into Seri. In the early 1980s Mrs. Moser continued her work with the Seri in various areas of study, including an extensive dictionary of the language. She is a graduate of the University of North Dakota.

The definitive volume on the Seri Indians of Sonora, Mexico.
By David Burckhalter
"People of the Desert and Sea-Ethnobotany of the Seri Indians" provides the most knowledgeable and complete resource available about the little-known Seri Indians of Sonora, Mexico, the last free nomadic mariners, hunters & gatherers of North America. This book shines as the definitive study of Seri culture. There are brilliant sections and chapters about Seri language, prehistory, history through the 20th century, the Seri calendar & Seri classification of the biological world, water & food quest, the supernatural, medicinal uses of plants & animals, shelter & fuel, boats & equipment, dress & ornament, recreation, music & oral tradition, basketry & ironwood carving, and finally, species accounts of plants in Seri culture. The readable and easy flowing text is sumptuously illustrated with B&W photographs and drawings. The primary author of this incredible book is Mary Beck "Becky" Moser, who has lived with and known the Seri Indians for almost 50 years. Linguist Moser, her deceased husband Edward & daughter Cathy are the only outsiders who have become fluent in the Seri language. Becky's esteem and friendship among the Seris has gained her unprecedented access to first hand accounts about Seri life and Seri tradition. Becky Moser's years of dedicated work and collaboration with botanist Richard Felger makes "People of the Desert and Sea" an invaluable resource and guide to anthropologists and biologists researching life in the Sonoran Desert.

The Education of Little Tree (Thorndike Press Large Print Paperback Series), by Forrest Carter

The Education of Little Tree tells of a boy orphaned very young, who is adopted by his Cherokee grandmother and half-Cherokee grandfather in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee during the Great Depression.

“Little Tree” as his grandparents call him is shown how to hunt and survive in the mountains, to respect nature in the Cherokee Way, taking only what is needed, leaving the rest for nature to run its course.

Little Tree also learns the often callous ways of white businessmen and tax collectors, and how Granpa, in hilarious vignettes, scares them away from his illegal attempts to enter the cash economy. Granma teaches Little Tree the joys of reading and education. But when Little Tree is taken away by whites for schooling, we learn of the cruelty meted out to Indian children in an attempt to assimilate them and of Little Tree’s perception of the Anglo world and how it differs from the Cherokee Way.

A classic of its era, and an enduring book for all ages, The Education of Little Tree has now been redesigned for this twenty-fifth anniversary edition.

You Really Don't Want to Miss Reading The Education of Little Tree, a gorgeous remembrance of earlier days in rural America.
By Beth Anderson aka Hotclue
I think every American should read this book. It's narrated by a Native Indian (Cherokee) as a very young boy, growing up under the care of his grandparents. It's beautiful, the narrative is always touching, often brilliant, gorgeously descriptive, and it could actually bring most anybody to tears, not always of sorrow but tears of joy in places. Little Tree, the narrator, does his very best to tell the story, and does it very well despite his limited knowledge of grammar. However, being 1/4 Cherokee myself, I remember very clearly how my grandmother spoke at times and Little Tree pretty much nabbed it. I can't recommend this book enough. Any American who wants a close look at the lives and language and beauty of our own early Americans, the Cherokee and other tribes, should read this. Little Tree's expressions and descriptions are touching and adorable, you'll fall in love with him and I promise you, you'll never forget him and his grandmother and grandfather. Lots of accuratendian history in this book. all true, some very sad, i.e., descriptions of the Trail of Tears, which always grab me and don't let go for months afterward, if ever. Just a great, great novel of how our ancestors, Indian or not, lived back in the day. I love, love, love this entire book. I'll keep it forever.

Interesting look into the lives of Native Americans and mountain people in the 1920s.
By elh
This was a wonderful look into the lives of Native Americans and mountain people and moonshiners in the 1920's told from the view point of a child. The book gives you a feel for living simply off the land in harmony with nature. There is controversy as to how much of this supposed autobiography is true but regardless, it is still a good book.

Carter gives us an inspiring view of "family"
By A Customer
Reguardless of the way the author lived his life, he has given us a look into what may be the best way to raise our families. I don't mean you have to live in the mountains (though that would be great), I'm talking about teaching our kids to live truthful lives. To respect nature, and live with (in) it, instead of fighting it. I'm not a native american, I can't say that I know enough about thier culture to accuse Carter of making it all up. But if using herbs, taking only what you need for food, respecting trees, animals, people, and caring for your family above all is not a part of Cherokee culture, then all of the other books about Indian culture I've been inspired to read (since reading Little Tree) must be wrong also. But I don't think so. Maybe the best aspect of this book is to incourage the reader to search out truthful accounts of native life, it just may change your thinking, and your life. I'd like believe that may have been the case with Mr.Carter. L.Runge

Getting Over the Color Green: Contemporary Environmental Literature of the SouthwestFrom Brand: University of Arizona Press

Desert vistas are often deemed vacant, inhospitable wastelands. Don't suggest that to Joy Harjo, Pat Mora, or other contemporary southwestern writers. In these arid stretches, often devoid of green, today's southwestern writers see pyrotechnic colors and Gothic shapes that excite and often overwhelm the imagination. And they capture this excitement in words that fix these desert images in the minds of readers who may too often look at the world through green-colored glasses. This anthology of contemporary nature writing from the Greater Southwest brings together a host of writers including peers of Edward Abbey such as Charles Bowden and Ann Zwinger and representatives of a new generation of writers such as Rick Bass and Terry Tempest Williams. The book is an eclectic blend of nonfiction and fiction, field notes and poetry, through which artists of diverse backgrounds both celebrate and illuminate the unique vitality and complexity of southwestern literature— proving that green is only one of many colors on their palette. The selections included here range all across the southwestern landscape and explore adventures in the wild, topics in natural history, living close to the land, and efforts at conservation and restoration. They clearly demonstrate that there is grace and beauty in this often-maligned part of the world— both in the human traditions that have developed in the region and in the natural features of the desert itself.

Review
"This ambitious anthology . . . gives naturalists a field day for expressing themselves. . . . An enlightening read for those who want to connect knowingly and accountably with our high-desert surroundings." —Santa Fe New Mexican"This is a collection of journeys, experiences, dreams, and histories—personal, cultural, and natural. All demonstrate that literature is alive and well and intimately regional; all demonstrate that the modifier 'environmental' creates a larger view for writers, integrating their commitments to place and people." —Bloomsbury Review"A rich collection of environmental writing from a remarkably diverse group of contemporary southwestern authors . . . Longtime southwesterners will become reacquainted with old friends, while newcomers are introduced to many of the Southwest's finest nature writers." —Journal of Arizona History"This volume is full of good things. . . . The authors Slovic has chosen embody much of the best hopes and the best thinking about the West." —Western American Literature"Should find a permanent place on reading lists of courses in Western or Southwestern American literature and is an excellent choice for composition courses with an environmental theme." —ISLE

It was worth the wait
By Charles M. Nobles
Thanks to The Univ. Of Arizona Press the long-awaited anthology of contemporary writing abouth the southwestern desert is finally available. While not the first anthology of this awesome area it is the first in over a decade to feature the best efforts of over 50 new generation contemporary writers that see the area through other than green-colored glasses. The region known as the "southwest" is, and has historically been, difficult too precisely define. From the time of John Wesley Powell to the present scholars and writers have struggled to define the region geographically. To paraphrase author Anthony DePalma, "We know the Southwest exists, but we do not know the Southwest." The editor of this anthology ultimately decided to accept Wallace Stegner's definition as being an area where water is scarce: "aridity, and aridity alone, makes the various West's one." Thus, this wonderful collection includes areas in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Idaho,Montana, Washington, Oregon, and California. To be sure, it is a somewhat loose definition but what a collection this is. Organized around four themes or categories: "Watching Closely; Forays in Natural History"; Risking Experience: Adventures in the Wild"; "Living Close to the Land"; and "Taking a Stand: Voices of Conservation and Restoration," the reader is introduced to the Greater Southwest through fiction and nonfiction, field notes and poetry. The journey will take you to Chaco Canyon in New Mexico and a family farm in south Texas. You will visit a Nevada Test Site and take a white water trip down the green river than ends all to soon. The short story on the release of Bison in the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve near Pawhuska, Ok. was both delightful and inspiring. The story of the San Rafael Swell in southern Utah and it's place in the making of the atomic bomb, combined with an essay by T.H. Watkins titled "Not by Human Measure". will give the reader an idea of the magnificence of the region. The selections, in some 70 pieces and 400 pages, celebrate the grace, beauty and grandeur of a region little known and mostly misunderstood. These are wide-ranging efforts to explain the sometimes almost unexplainable in an area historically, and increasingly, under siege. There are those that argue such a book will only lead to more tourists and visitors to a region that has a fragile ecosystem and cannot tolerate much more "understanding." They argue that if to many heed the warning of Wallace Stegner: "you have to get over the color green; you have to quit associating beauty with gardens and lawns; you have to het used to an inhuman scale; you have to understand geological time," this treasure will go the way of Glen Canyon, parts of the Colorado River, the Rio Grande and other one-time natural wonders. At the expense of contributing to this possibility I must highly recommend this book. For anyone remotely interested in the southwest region or reading some of the best of the best contemporary nature writers published today, get this book. The University of Arizona Press is to be commended for this effort. It took a decade to get it published but was worth the wait.
