Clear explanation of salvation and character development

Author makes plain what God does to save us and what we do in response to God's mercy to overcome the dragon within. The dragon within is driven by selfishness and includes the emotions of shame, anger and guilt. Only God can change our selfish nature. After that, we resist sin by changing our sinful understanding, changing our sinful desires and changing our sinful behavior. The key is to shift our thoughts away from ourselves and focus on the love and mercy of God.

Five years ago, I was on the path to suicide. I read *everything* I could get my hands on getting out of my personal sankepit, but nothing worked for long. Thank God I found this book and and found the tools I needed. Mr. Moore provides well-researched Biblical concepts to have that elusive victorious life. Am I living on Easy Street now, hah, far from it. Mr. Moore's book showed me how to turn on the lights to avoid life's rocks and pot holes.

This book is excellent! It is Biblical, and very helpful in learning to trust God to do the work of sanctification. It will help you to understand how God does this amazing work in us. It will help you to develop a powerful and effective relationship with Jesus and teach you to depend on His power to save you. This book is very practical and easy to read. I highly recommend it!

Combining poetic language and the traditions of magic realism to paint a vivid portrait of her family, Pat Mora's House of Houses is an unconventional memoir that reads as if every member, death notwithstanding, is in one room talking, laughing, and crying. In a take-off on the Day of the Dead, the story begins with a visit to the cemetery in which all of her deceased relatives come alive to share stories of the family, literally bringing the food to their own funerals. From there the book covers a year in the life of her clan, revealing the personalities and events that Mora herself so desperately yearns to know and understand.

By abandoning the traditional memoir form, Mora allows the reader to meet in person each member of her extended, often eccentric family, learning of their lives firsthand. In this way, the principal actors serve to drive the narrative they helped to create. The people are as rich and elaborate as any fictional characters, including a father who can transform himself into a bird, and a grandmother who, though blind, sees visions of the Virgin Mary. Woven into the story are songs, recipes, and colloquialisms that reveal the family's Mexican heritage and signal the subtle transformations that occur upon moving north to Texas. In the end, Mora's tender touch with language creates an imaginative reunion between past and present, leaving a legacy for future generations.

Poet Mora (Confetti, Lee & Low, 1996) has written the memoir of a Mexican American family in the form of voices of her ancestors living and dead. These 12 chapters, one for each month of the year, are deeply meaningful; each story, event, and name has a message about life, love, dependence, and memory. For example, we read of Mora's grandmother, the Mexican Cinderella, a red-haired orphan taken in by wealthy relatives; her mother, Estella, the extrovert; and her father, Raul, whom we meet on the first page when her Aunt Chole asks, "How can you still be hungry if you're dead?" The book contains photographs and genealogical charts to enhance the reader's perceptions and understanding of this work as a social and historical document. It is reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude as well as Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club but at times becomes disjointed and overschematic, treating the most fantastic happenings as if they were everyday occurrences. Loved It!

Some "magical realism" stories (with dead relatives interacting with the living) seem contrived; this memoir's use of the same device does not. Though I am not Hispanic nor Spanish-speaking, I am a native of Texas and loved this book. It resonated with me in part because much of it takes place in Texas (El Paso), and also because I find family histories compelling (my own family -- and other families).I disagree with the New York Times reviewer (above and on the book jacket) who says the author's use of Spanish phrases cannot be picked up from context clues. Nonsense! The author gives the English translation right in the same paragraph!A good read that can be picked up and put down as time warrants.

A Great history of Peru

A Brief history of Peru covers the entire history in a succinct and efficient manor. While it would be nice if a little more attention was paid to Manco Inca's rebellion and the importance of Bolivar; the book still succeeds in painting a picture of Peru's prosperity. The writing is very clear and well done showing how dictatorships rose and the military and civilian powers grew apart. This book also covers the Shining Path terrorist organization in very good detail setting the stage for the modern era in Peru. The confusion that the country is now gripped in is truly astounding. From violence on all sides to the election of the first Indian president the country is set for historic changes. Those who want to understand how Peru formed into the nation it is today will be well served by this book.

Yaqui Nation

Since my 4th great grandfather was of Yaqui ancestry and a soldier at Presidio San Diego in the late 1700s, I looked forward to reading this book because there are few in English about Yaqui Nation. Both books by Professor Hu-DeHart cover various aspects of Yaqui history, and since I am writing a family history myself, I am finding invaluable facts and references throughout her work. Before the Franciscans became known for their California missions, the Jesuits evangelized northern Mexico and later Baja California. This book delves into that period and gives me a greater appreciation of the resilience of the Yaqui people.

Quite useful as a refference for writing papers of post-graduate level. Compact book, but amount of information contained is enough to surprise you. Easy to read, especially if you have some background of knowledge related to this field.

Reading Rane Arroyo’s poems is a little like watching a movie playing at fastforward speed on the TV in your darkened bedroom. The colors pop and snap, the images leap and recede, the colors seem brighter than life—and you can’t stop watching even long enough to blink. It’s an intimate experience. Even at hyperspeed you can make out the images of friends, family, and lovers (especially lovers) burning rubber across the unblinking screen. And even without a sound track, you can hear the music—a symphony of jazz and samba, salsa and street sounds.

In The Buried Sea, Arroyo has selected poems from his first eleven books—five full-length collections of poems and six chapbooks—and has added nineteen new poems. When asked to describe himself, Arroyo writes that “the answer is easy: I’m a Puerto Rican, gay, Midwestern, educated, former working class, liberal, atheistic, humanist, American, male, ex-Mormon, ex-Catholic, pseudo-Buddhist, teacher, reader, global, and popular culture—informed poet.” Readers will find traces of all of these selves in this collection. And Arroyo does make it “easy” to follow the clues. His poems—vivacious, sexy, shiny, sly, pointed, ambitious—are easy to approach and easy to love. But they come with strings attached—like all affairs of the heart—and therein lies so much of their pleasure.

Incredibly useful anthology

A wonderful primer on Rane Arroyo, one of the U.S.'s most outstanding poets. Brings together poetry from many books, including lyrical reflections on geing a gay Puerto Rican in the Midwest. A great teaching resource or general introduction to his work. Includes many of my personal favorites.
