A Tremendous Resource for the "Some-time" Counselor
By DocRossow
As someone who often counsels as part of my job, and will be attending an upcoming Stephen Minsitry training, I rediscovered this book on my shelf, and appreciate it even more than on my first "pass-through" years ago. The authors celebrate the thousands (maybe millions) of people who are thrust into counseling roles on a daily basis, so they charge ahead and describe positive actions we can take to make our "supportive counseling" role work to the counselee's advantage. The authors have numerous descriptions of problem behaviors that provide a real reference for the lay person, but the real strength in the book is the care they take in illustrating the relationship between the counselor and counselee. The chapter on "Hard-bought Wisdom" is alone worth the price of the book. I'm glad to see that it is back-ordered; there's hope that it won't permanently be out of print. If you are a part-time counselor, I highly recommend this book.

A great book just like the others in the series!
By A Customer
I have every book in the series and when I heard that a new one was out I started saving to buy it.Willie and his grandfather were coming home from a fair and got hit with a rock slide. After praying about their problem they fell asleep. The next night they heard voises. The next day a sheriff unit came and rescued them. I like it because it shows how we can pray to God and He will help us. It is a very good book and it keeps you in suspense. I recomend it to everyone.

Crafting History in the Northern Plains: A Political Economy of the Heart River Region, 1400–1750 (Archaeology of Indigenous-Colonial

The histories of post-1500 American Indian and First Nations societies reflect a dynamic interplay of forces. Europeans introduced new technologies, new economic systems, and new social forms, but those novelties were appropriated, resisted, modified, or ignored according to indigenous meanings, relationships, and practices that originated long before Europeans came to the Americas. A comprehensive understanding of the changes colonialism wrought must therefore be rooted in trans-Columbian native histories that span the centuries before and after the advent of the colonists.
In Crafting History in the Northern Plains Mark D. Mitchell illustrates the crucial role archaeological methods and archaeological data can play in producing trans-Columbian histories. Combining an in-depth analysis of the organization of stone tool and pottery production with ethnographic and historical data, Mitchell synthesizes the social and economic histories of the native communities located at the confluence of the Heart and Missouri rivers, home for more than five centuries to the Mandan people.
Mitchell is the first researcher to examine the impact of Mandan history on the developing colonial economy of the Northern Plains. In Crafting History in the Northern Plains, he demonstrates the special importance of native history in the 1400s and 1500s to the course of European colonization.

Arizona Politicians: The Noble and the Notorious, by James W. Johnson

Do you know these famous Arizona politicians?
—A congresswoman who was bridesmaid to Eleanor Roosevelt
—A car dealer who propelled himself to the governor's mansion with the help of public recognition of his TV commercials
—An Arizonan who served not only as governor and chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court, but also as the Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate and chief sponsor of the GI Bill
—A cowboy who delivered speeches to ranchhands and went on to become a U.S. senator known as one of the great orators of the twentieth century
—One of four Arizonans who lost a bid for the presidency yet made the Gallup Poll as one of the ten most admired men in the world
—A secretary who became the first woman in the nation to sit on a state supreme court

For a state with a small population, Arizona has had an unusually strong presence on the national political scene. Barry Goldwater, Mo Udall, Bruce Babbitt, and John McCain made memorable runs for the White House over just the past four decades. Stewart Udall, Secretary of the Interior under Kennedy, was the first cabinet appointment from the state. Attorney General Richard Kleindienst and Supreme Court justice William Rehnquist were controversial appointees of Richard Nixon. And Arizona claims two of today's nine Supreme Court justices—not only Rehnquist, now Chief Justice, but also Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman ever appointed to the high court. Not all of Arizona's politicians have garnered such distinction. Two of the state's last four governors of the twentieth century, Evan Mecham and Fife Symington, faced criminal indictments and were forced out of office.

Journalist James Johnson has written profiles of 21 men and women from Arizona who have made their mark in the political arena. Chosen for their contributions to the state, their national prominence, their colorful personalities, and in some cases their notoriety, these prominent public servants—from first governor George W. P. Hunt to current senior senator McCain—all have been major participants in state or national affairs. Congressman Mo Udall once commented on Arizona's "civilized brand of politics," in which Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals, treated one another with mutual respect. Johnson conveys both the spirit and spiritedness of Arizona politics and reveals how in many cases these politicians and their family members found their lives and careers overlapping. He tells their stories with humor and objectivity, while political cartoonist David Fitzsimmons captures their trademark styles in original drawings.

Although the individuals may speak from different platforms, all have been proud to call themselves Arizonans and proud to serve their state. This book shares their accomplishments and shows how, for better or worse, they've helped put Arizona in the spotlight.

"An entertaining look at some of the state's most colorful lawmakers . . . [Johnson] tells these provocative Arizona stories with wit and style."—Arizona Insight

"Johnson has an ear for the humorous anecdote that makes this book a readable one. It contains most of Arizona's best political jokes-including, as [Mo] Udall used to say, the ones we've elected."—Arizona Daily Star

An accessible and fun read on some of Arizona's noble and notorious politicians.
By Alex Kassman
This is a great primer for anyone interested in a brief overview of some of Arizona's noteworthy politicians. There are brief, anecdotal, profiles of 21 politicians who spent great portions of their lives in Arizona (not necessarily Arizona natives). The writing style of journalist James W. Johnson is breezy and superb. The illustrations by David Fitzsimmons are perfect caricatures of the personalities portrayed. The casual tone of the book makes it an accessible and light read. Highly recommended. I wish I could say this was one book in a series of profiles, as there are so many "noble and notorious" Arizona politicians that are worthy of this book.

Featured Arizona politicians are John McCain, Isabella Greenway, Stewart Udall, Evan Mecham, Lewis W. Douglas, Sandra Day O'Connor, Ernest McFarland, George W.P. Hunt, Barry Goldwater, Rose Mofford, Sam Steiger, Bruce Babbitt, Henry Fountain Ashurst, William H. Rehnquist, Mo Udall, Lorna Lockwood, Carl T. Hayden, Raul Castro, Fife Symington, Richard Kleindienst, and John Rhodes.

The Tropical Deciduous Forest of Alamos: Biodiversity of a Threatened Ecosystem in MexicoFrom University of Arizona Press

Only a day's drive south of the U.S.-Mexico border, a tropical deciduous forest opens up a world of exotic trees and birds that most people associate with tropical forests of more southerly latitudes. Like many such forests around the world, this diverse ecosystem is highly threatened, especially by large-scale agricultural interests that are razing it in order to plant grass for cattle.

This book introduces the tropical deciduous forest of the Alamos region of Sonora, describing its biodiversity and the current threats to its existence. The book's contributors present the most up-to-date scientific knowledge of this threatened ecosystem. They review the natural history and ecology of its flora and fauna and explore how native peoples use the forest's many resources.

Included in the book's coverage is a comprehensive plant list for the Río Cuchujaqui area that well illustrates the diversity of the forest. Other contributions examine tree species used by Mayo Indians and the numerous varieties of domesticated plants that have been developed over the centuries by the Mayos and other indigenous peoples. Also examined are the diversity and distribution of reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and birds in the region.

The Tropical Deciduous Forest of Alamos provides critical information about a globally important biome. It complements other studies of similar forests and allows a better understanding of a diverse but vanishing ecosystem.

This is a fascinating set of papers describing the plants and animals of North America's northernmost tropical deciduous forest--Alamos is less than a day's drive from southern Arizona. Birders will find in Steve Russell's chapter with its useful tabular checklists perhaps the most valuable print resource available treating the avifauna of this site.

Miranda: The Story of America’s Right to Remain Silent, by Gary L. Stuart

One of the most significant Supreme Court cases in U.S. history has its roots in Arizona and is closely tied to the state’s leading legal figures. Miranda has become a household word; now Gary Stuart tells the inside story of this famous case, and with it the legal history of the accused’s right to counsel and silence. Ernesto Miranda was an uneducated Hispanic man arrested in 1963 in connection with a series of sexual assaults, to which he confessed within hours. He was convicted not on the strength of eyewitness testimony or physical evidence but almost entirely because he had incriminated himself without knowing it—and without knowing that he didn’t have to. Miranda’s lawyers, John P. Frank and John F. Flynn, were among the most prominent in the state, and their work soon focused the entire country on the issue of their client’s rights. A 1966 Supreme Court decision held that Miranda’s rights had been violated and resulted in the now-famous "Miranda warnings." Stuart personally knows many of the figures involved in Miranda, and here he unravels its complex history, revealing how the defense attorneys created the argument brought before the Court and analyzing the competing societal interests involved in the case. He considers Miranda's aftermath—not only the test cases and ongoing political and legal debate but also what happened to Ernesto Miranda. He then updates the story to the Supreme Court’s 2000 Dickerson decision upholding Miranda and considers its implications for cases in the wake of 9/11 and the rights of suspected terrorists. Interviews with 24 individuals directly concerned with the decision—lawyers, judges, and police officers, as well as suspects, scholars, and ordinary citizens—offer observations on the case’s impact on law enforcement and on the rights of the accused. Ten years after the decision in the case that bears his name, Ernesto Miranda was murdered in a knife fight at a Phoenix bar, and his suspected killer was "Mirandized" before confessing to the crime. Miranda: The Story of America’s Right to Remain Silent considers the legacy of that case and its fate in the twenty-first century as we face new challenges in the criminal justice system.

From Booklist
It seems odd to think of it, but a suspect's right to remain silent is only four decades old. Well, that's not precisely true: U.S. citizens have had the right not to incriminate themselves for some time, but it was not until the 1963 case of Miranda v. Arizona that advising a suspect of the right to remain silent became encoded in law. When told he had been identified by a witness, Ernesto Miranda, an accused serial rapist, figured he might as well fess up. He didn't know he had the right to keep his mouth shut because the police officers hadn't told him. That simple, seemingly insignificant incident changed the American legal system in a massive way. The author, an attorney and law professor who knew many of the people involved in the Miranda case and its aftermath, tells the story simply, making even the most complicated and subtle legal points entirely clear. He also explores how the Miranda decision affects law enforcement in the post-9/11 world. Interesting, timely, and important. David Pitt
