Helen Kreider Henderson is the head of the Women in Development Program and is an assistant research anthropologist at the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology at the University of Arizona. She has done fieldwork in Africa, with a focus on the role of women in agriculture and development.

I Should Have Just Gotten A Snack Instead

As a recent devotee of GWTW fan fiction I decided to dust off the original GWTW published fanfic at the $12 Kindle price and give it another chance. It is as one-dimensional and as dull as I remembered. When did the love story between Rhett and Scarlett actually pick up in this sequel? Ms. Ripley made a few fleeting attempts at Rhett's POV but the reader mostly knew of his actions and words. His part in the continuation of the greatest love story of all time is the bare minimum and when he is injected into a scene his character never came across as a man tortured by his destructive love for Scarlett. He acted as though he really, truly no longer loved her. In 'Scarlett' Rhett Butler was everything that is blase and bland. And a vanilla Rhett Butler is character assassination in its highest form. To add insult to injury Scarlett appeared to have regressed into a prepubescent teen attempting to hold on to her first crush. 'Scarlett' is as I had remembered: an unmitigated disaster. Gone With The Wind and Scarlett

Gone With The Wind is the very best romance novel I have ever read in my life and then when the sequil came out I only read the book and refused to watch the movie because there will never be another Vivian Leigh or Clark Gable and if I read the book only then in my mind Rhett will always be Clark Gable and Scarlett will always and forever be Vivian Leigh. I enjoyed the details of both of these wonderful books and will always and forever cherish those two spectacular books. I am 29 years old and the other night Gone With The Wind was on T.V. and even though it was the end I let my 10 year old step daughter stay up and watch the movie, she is now reading the book and wants to purchase the movie. This book and movie was what I based my southern style wedding on and this seems to have put a spark in her eyes as well.

I ordered the large size print and I was very happy to receive this book in good condition. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves this story. The only problem is this is the 2nd half of the story. Wish I could find the first half of the story in big print but so far no luck. Linda

Offers a spiritual center

In November 1864 in Colorado Territory a village of Cheyenne and Arapaho was savagely assaulted by the Colorado Volunteers under the leadership of the Reverend Colonel Chivington. Ortiz calls to mind this event in prose, and then offers on the facing page poetry of hope and renewal. That is how this remarkable book begins. Throughout the book, the author (one of the best American poets writing today) pairs poems on one page with historical vignettes, personal notes, and political comments on the facing page. The book moves through alcohol treatment in VA hospitals, American mythology that undergirds a sense of mission, episodes in Indian-white relations, and many other such topics. In this work Ortiz builds toward a vision of America that is political committed, spiritually centered, and humanizing. He expresses this vision in full knowledge and acceptance of the awful truths of patterns of mistreatment and oppression. Unlike so much of the patriotism that is rooted in a "my country right or wrong" attitude, Ortiz writes as an Acoma Pueblo Indian and US citizen who loves this country deeply for what it can be.
I came to this book a number of years ago full of anger and cynicism developing as a result of learning the history that had been suppressed from the school curriculum. I had always been deeply patriotic, but was finding the truth might shatter that. Ortiz offered more evidence of the lies, but placed these facts in a framework of a dream "of love and compassion and knowledge" (96). No book has done more for the development of my sense of myself as a white American. From my point of view this book is simply the best book in print (and it was out of print for several years).

Ortiz is Brilliant

But you better be prepared to have your heart broken by this reporting of the quiet horror that has defined the experience of Native Americans since the genocidal fury of the European Invasion began. This is gorgeous minimalist poetry dealing with existential issues that I could not read for very long without weeping and having to put it down for another day. When I think about the lies I was taught in school: The Winning of the West, Manifest Destiny, all of it, I am disgusted with my white compatriots and have only a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Ortiz and so many others who have managed to respond from such a compassionate but relentlessly clear-eyed place. Thankfully the role of the artist is to stand for truth in the face of the ignorant and uncaring status quo.

FANTASTIC POEMS AND TRUE TO HEART

There are not many Native American authors and this book brought tears to my eyes. He is an excellent author bringing realty that is not well known (Sand Creek Anniliation) to the reader in a most unique way. I suggest everyone get this book and understand what the Native Americans have suffered in the past and yet today suffer some of the same attrocities. Simon J. Ortiz, my hat is off to you, keep them coming and readers, if you do not have this book, I suggest you get it.

Disappointed!

These books are my standard Christmas reading each year. I own every book in this series, but must say this time I am disappointed with the content. There were not really any stories which stood out to me. Usually I read these in 1-2 days, but this took a week. I appreciate the work Dr. Wheeler puts into these books, but this one was not up to the series usual standard.
