Reich's preface indicates that his purpose is to seek to encompass a complex and continuing history by focusing on the main themes of establishing the state of Israel and ensuring its continued existence. He begins by tracing its history from biblical times to the Ottoman period and continues with the prehistory of the country from 1880 to 1948. In the remaining chapters, Reich chronicles the nation's development. There are chapters describing the political, economic, and military consolidation (1948-67), the Six Days' War and the Yom Kippur War and its aftermath (1967-75), peace with Egypt and the Begin years (1975-79), the Palestinian Intifada (1979-90), the Persian Gulf War and the Middle East peace (1990-96), the Netanyahu and Barak governments (1996-2000), and the Al-Aqsa Intifada (2000 to the present). Reich concludes that today Israel's security and its future are precarious, but it is certain that Israel will continue to exist as the world's only Jewish state. This latest volume in the publisher's Brief History series contains a chronology, an appendix of suggested reading, and 48 black-and-white photographs. George Cohen

Bernard Reich is professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University and former chairman of advanced area studies (Middle East-Fertile Crescent) at the Department of State's Foreign Service Institute. He is a member of the Board of Advisory Editors of the Middle East Journal and of the International Editorial Board of Israel Affairs and has testified before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Joint Economic Committee of Congress. It tells of the Chiricahua Apaches’ 27 years of imprisonment as recorded in American dispatches, reports, and news items: documents that disclose the confusion, contradictions, and raw emotions expressed by government and military officials regarding the Apaches while revealing the shameful circumstances in which they were held. First removed from Arizona to Florida, the prisoners were eventually relocated to Mount Vernon Barracks in Alabama, where, in the words of one Apache, "We didn’t know what misery was until they dumped us in those swamps." Pulmonary disease took its toll—by 1894, disease had killed nearly half of the Apaches—and after years of pressure from Indian rights activists and bureaucratic haggling, Fort Sill in Oklahoma was chosen as a more healthful location. Here they were given the opportunity to farm, and here Geronimo, who eventually converted to Christianity, died of pneumonia in 1909 at the age of 89, still a prisoner of war. In the meantime, many Apache children had been removed to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, for education—despite earlier promises that families would not be split up—and most eventually lost their cultural identity. Henrietta Stockel has combed public records to reconstruct this story of American shame and Native endurance. Unabashedly speaking on behalf of the Apaches, she has framed these documents within a readable narrative to show how exasperated public officials, eager to openly demonstrate their superiority over "savages" who had successfully challenged the American military for years, had little sympathy for the consequences of their confinement. Although the Chiricahua Apaches were not alone in losing their ancestral homelands, they were the only American Indians imprisoned for so long a time in an environment that continually exposed them to illnesses against which they had no immunity, devastating families even more than warfare. It's the story of the treatment of a once proud ...

It's the story of the treatment of a once proud people AFTER they surrendered and what they had to endure to survive. The author uses the Apaches and the U.S. governments own words from documented records to tell the real story of how the process of erasing a culture took place. But the book also show the resilience of the Apace people to endure and survive despite the governments attempt to scatter and relocate to desolate areas with unfulfilled promises of proper living conditions.

A Great Read, A Great Resource

"Vice Presidents" presents the reader with a brief biography, generally running six to ten pages, about each Vice President of the United States. Each biography covers the pre-vice presidential, vice presidential and, where applicable, post vice presidential careers of its subject. Every entry is written by an expert in the field.

This book can be used as a reference or as an introduction to the varied and accomplished men who have served as our vice presidents. I found that reading it through provides an understanding of the office and the men who have held it. For all of the jokes, the vice presidents are a very distinguished group. Besides the ones who have served as president, many of the others were seriously considered for the office. Most had impressive careers which either ended or were continued when they reached the vice-presidency.

The changing nature of the office can be gleaned from a reading of these biographies. Originally the vice presidents were, primarily, presiding officers of the Senate, with little or no involvement in the president's administration. Over time the vice presidents gradually shifted from the legislative to the executive branch. Garrett Hobart (1897-99) was an early one to be a confidant and aid to the president. Calvin Coolidge (1921-23) began the tradition of vice presidents' attendance at cabinet meetings. Beginning with Richard Nixon the veeps acquired increasingly important roles in the administration. Today we expect a vice- president to maintain unquestioning loyalty to the administration. This has not always been so. Some, most recently John Nance Garner, actively opposed Administration programs, even to the point of voting against administration backed bills in the Senate.

All the impressive things we learn not withstanding, there are some whose habits are so at variance from our standards as to be funny. Two who come to mind are Richard Johnson (1837-41) who was shunned, not because he had a family with a slave, but because he was open about it, and Aaron Burr, the All-American villain.

For those seeking to get beyond the high points of history, "Vice Presidents" is a great place to start.
