An authoritative Aztec text in Nahuatl

In his preface, the author makes clear that he intends this as "a companion volume" to his "History and mythology of the Aztecs: the Codex Chimalpopoca", a translation and annotation of this text. The book before us presents the original Nahuatl text, directly transcribed from the manuscript (i.e. without addition of glottal stops and vowel length, or other significant modification), to which the author has added a glossary, but no notes beyond the definitions given there.

Excellent, but only for those already well-versed in Nahuatl and the political and cultural context of Aztec rule and myth.

Beautifully written account of a childhood on Jemez Pueblo.

N. Scott Momaday's beautifully written memoir of childhood in Jemez Pueblo, NM is geographically as well as chronologically defined, incorporating "the empty spaces of time in the morning and afternoon," the wide blue New Mexico sky, and the undeveloped high desert into the narrative as Momaday searches the landscape of his memory for the key word or image, _the name_ for things, that will retrieve the entirety of his history. Retrieval of this complex history, of emotion and memory, "the vibrant ecstasy of so much being," is almost possible. "Again and again, I have come to that awful edge, that one word, perhaps, that I cannot bring from my mouth."
_The Names_ is moving in its description of the ceremonies of Jemez Pueblo and the stories of Momaday's family. The author writes sometimes in a child's voice and sometimes in his grandfather's or the voices of others around him. It is clearly a child's story, saturated with a child's sense of wonder. But Momaday also provides an account of the process of attempted recovery, the descent into storytelling: "The first word gives origin to the second, the first and second to the third, . . . and so on. You cannot begin with the second word and tell the story, for the telling of the story is a cumulative process, a chain of becoming, at last of being."

Momaday's exploration of language's structure and limitations makes much of the book beautiful to me, but gets weighted down in intellectualization from time to time. Scott Momaday is a scholar -- he went to Stanford -- and the analytical aspect of _The Names_ can be a bit dry at times. It is, on the whole though, a sensitive and moving exploration of a Native American childhood and one of my favorite male autobiographies.

A Photo album and long letter...

That's how I think of this book - a photo album of old family photos with one long letter (or, perhaps it would be better described as a series of short notes written by someone trying to remember what they'd seen, heard, imagines, or discovered). It's a fun book to read straight through, or to flip around in, going back and forth through the photos and reading about the person whose face or photo catches your eye . If you love the Southwest......

If you love the Southwest, you will love this book. Momaday writes about the landscape like no other writer. He captures the immensity and color of that vast area. His other books "House made of Dawn" and "Rainy Mountain" are equally moving. I keep them handy at all times, just to read certain passages of transcendant imagery.

"It seems to me that almost everything is a waste of time," Milo laments. "[T]here's nothing for me to do, nowhere I'd care to go, and hardly anything worth seeing." This bored, bored young protagonist who can't see the point to anything is knocked out of his glum humdrum by the sudden and curious appearance of a tollbooth in his bedroom. Since Milo has absolutely nothing better to do, he dusts off his toy car, pays the toll, and drives through. What ensues is a journey of mythic proportions, during which Milo encounters countless odd characters who are anything but dull.

Norton Juster received (and continues to receive) enormous praise for this original, witty, and oftentimes hilarious novel, first published in 1961. In an introductory "Appreciation" written by Maurice Sendak for the 35th anniversary edition, he states, "The Phantom Tollbooth leaps, soars, and abounds in right notes all over the place, as any proper masterpiece must." Indeed.

As Milo heads toward Dictionopolis he meets with the Whether Man ("for after all it's more important to know whether there will be weather than what the weather will be"), passes through The Doldrums (populated by Lethargarians), and picks up a watchdog named Tock (who has a giant alarm clock for a body). The brilliant satire and double entendre intensifies in the Word Market, where after a brief scuffle with Officer Short Shrift, Milo and Tock set off toward the Mountains of Ignorance to rescue the twin Princesses, Rhyme and Reason. Anyone with an appreciation for language, irony, or Alice in Wonderland-style adventure will adore this book for years on end. (Ages 8 and up)

The childhood favorite that's still with me

After my first reading of 'The Phantom Tollbooth', it became,and still remains, my favorite young reader book. I wrote two book reports on it for my middle school reading classes. I even received a copy of it as a tenth birthday present. Ever since, I've read it from cover to cover at least once a year.
As a child, I enjoyed reading the strange adventures of a bored Milo embarking on his legendary quest. As an adult, I enjoy the tome's play on words, such as the Whether man ("It's more important to know whether there will be weather, rather than what the weather will be") and the Isle of Conclusions, a place you have to jump to to get there. I also love the book's personifying such abstract concepts as statistics, like the (literally) half a child that Milo meets who's the end result of the average family having 2.58 children. It also has neat takes on people's points of view, like the boy who grows down, rather than up. Needless to say, it's pretty apparent that even though I loved this book as a kid, I appreciate it much more as an adult.
If you remember reading this as a child, I strongly recommend you give it a look again. You'll likely pick up on quite a few things in the story that you might not have gotten the gist of in your youth!

An enjoyable classic of great originality.

I first had this book read to me by my third grade teacher, and begged my mother to buy it for me soon thereafter, that I might read it for myself. It was my first "favorite book" (for all those what-are-your-favorite-book questions), and it continues to be a treasured classic on my shelf.
The story follows the journey of Milo, a boy bored of basically everything around him. One day he receives a mysterious package that turns out to be a tollbooth. For lack of anything better to do, he puts it together and begins to play, only to find himself driving in an entirely different world. There he meets all sort of curious creatures, from a giant watchdog (literally, a dog whose body is a watch) and a humbug the size of a person. Juster plays with words as if they were tangible objects to juggle, and continually surprises the reader by turning ordinary events into magical occurrences. This book very much exemplifies the quote (and I apologize for not naming the speaker, who slips my mind at this moment) "The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to get sharper."
Although Norton Juster's tale will probably never receive as much wild acclaim as the Harry Potter series, The Phantom Tollbooth nevertheless exhibits its own quiet charm. It is full of original characters and entertaining events, and I heartily recommend it for any child, or adult for that matter, who would like to be amused for a few hours on a rainy afternoon - especially if you think there's nothing to do! It is a wonderful book to read to a child, and the simple black and white drawings scattered throughout the text belie the vivid pictures that Juster paints with his words.

Twenty five years ago seems like the distant past but we still make ratatouille the same way and who would have ever dreamed that so many people would say to us, "I had Chicken Marbella at a dinner party last week and I just loved it." It took slight madness to open our little store in 1977. Florence Fabricant was writing an article on the renaissance of Columbus Avenue, where our shop was opening, we needed a name, she was on a deadline and called and said, "What are you calling your store?" We didn't know. "Why don't you call it The Silver Palate," she said. We loved it. It took sheer bravery in 1982 to write our book--who would need to buy food in our store any longer once they had all of our recipes? But that never happened for one hour. In fact, it helped us go national even further. Here we are, 25 years later, celebrating with a brand new edition of our book that finally highlights our recipes with vibrant color photographs. I once picked up the phone and someone on the other end said, "Sheila, I just baked the Decadent Chocolate Cake and my cake doesn't look like the drawing." I didn't know how to reply. I assured them the taste made up for the looks. It's bittersweet, but those problems are solved forever. While different, the color adds an exciting new dimension to the cookbook that has been a treasure to so many cooks for two and a half decades. Julee and I had a fantasy food partnership and the publication of this book has given us the opportunity to spend some wonderful time together.

The Return of a Beloved Friend

I've had this cookbook for 25 years, and while the recipes are the same, there is some new commentary, and the pix are now photos instead of the original drawings. While not altogether more helpful in that respect, my old and beloved version is tattered, stained, and really deserves to retire from almost daily use. I have met more interesting people over Chicken Marbella all over the world than any other recipe I "do." It has been a family fixture every July 4th at Lake Almanor for 25 years. I've had it at Passover at friends' homes; and bcs of it renewed relationships with women who really would have preferred to avoid me forever. Sounds weird? Well, there is little in life that crosses all political, religious and emotional borders like food; and there is even less like Chicken Marbella, which can even spark conversations in Urdu (which I do not speak, yet we managed to communicate to each other our passion about CM). If you try nothing else, and believe me, you will try a lot else, do the CM. The ingredient list appears long, but it is very easy. In fact, there is nothing in this whole book that is difficult, yet the results are deeply complex and pleasurable. Rosso and Lukins make me look like a chef instead of a cook and I will bless them forever for it. If you don't have a copy of Silver Palate, try it. If you do have one, you already know what I'm talking about, and you NEED a replacement just as I did.

I have heard a great deal concerning the Silver Palate Cookbook and was interested in purchasing a copy. The soft cover price was right and the recipies have not disappointed. They are not overly complicated, pretentious or demand bizzare food items. I found them to be both accessiible and practical. I am not a cook that relies upon alot of gadgets,I like clean flavors, not too complex or subtle, (we're not in a contest eating at home!) The items are clearly labled by food group and food item and I know I will reach for this book for years to come. Nice addition to my small but growing collection. I am a Barefoot Contessa cook and see this as a nice compliment to her point of view.

I love this cookbook

I love this cookbook. I have owned a copy for at least 30 years. I wore out one copy and got another but I can't bear to part with the first copy. I also gave it to my sister when she got married. This copy was a wedding gift to my nephew and his bride. I am sure they will enjoy it. This cookbook and Julia Child changed how I think about food and cooking. I think I am a chef now, in part, because of this book.

Part 4 is an annotated bibliography of the best research books and articles, while part 5 is a glossary of terms. All of the guides conclude with an index of authors, terms, and titles. The series will be very useful for teachers who are looking for help in planning discussions for their classes and for college students who need help in figuring out how to study a work and developing a theme for a paper. High-school students in advanced literature courses will also find these books useful for their research. A step back in time for the female species

Enjoyable book of little vignettes about daily life of a suburban middle class housewife in the 1930s. Quite poignant at times to see how her family treats her with disdain. You can see how the modern female has developed over the years from being dominated by husband and current conventions to the present where a woman can say, feel and do as she pleases.

Eclectic Read

Excellent book but not for all readers. It is about a simpler times when female and male roles were rigid and clearly understood. But change is in the air. At times Mr. Bridges was insufferable. Other times he seemed confused about his children and their choices.

Quintessential Housewive

This is a classic novel of America as it was sixty years ago. Readers get glimpses of the Bridges, a typical 2-kid family, through short stories told by the mother (Mrs. Bridge). The stories are all in chronological order and cover the span of her marriage, and as time progresses you see the changes that occur in Mrs. Bridge, most especially, but in the other characters as well. A great read, along with its companion, Mr. Bridge (told from the husband's perspective) and one that all wives and mothers should read (and everyone else, too)!
