About the Author
Lourdes Morales-Gudmundsson received her Ph.D. from Brown University and has authored numerous articles for Adventist publications and scholarly journals. She is currently a professor and chair of the department of modern languages at La Sierra University in California. Lourdes and her husband, Reynir, have one married daughter, Carmen, who is an occupational therapist. Lourdes enjoys singing, playing the guitar and piano, and traveling.

I've been waiting for this book...

I've been searching for a book like this for awhile. That said, it still took me several months to finish it. Why? Forgiveness is hard! My struggle with forgiveness revolves around the fact that the ones I have trouble forgiving pretend they didn't do anything wrong, or feel like what they did was not that bad. In one case, I cannot approach the person to say "I forgive you," because it would not be safe.
What I was looking for, and found in this book, is what to do when you cannot confront the person. A part of that book even deals with the chance that YOU are the offender. We sometimes give as much as we get.
As much as one feels like you can "just forget and move on" but not forgive, this book points out that not forgiving has very real consequences. As a Christian, we forgive as we have been forgiven, however hard that is!
I suggest this to any Christian struggling with forgiving, from the "small" injuries, to the "large", life changing ones. It IS ok to struggle with forgiveness, despite what those people say who demend your forgiveness because "you are a christian and are told to."

As a publisher, one of the things I hate the most is when big screen movies and made-for-TV movies take really well written, interesting stores and make horrible movies out of them And in doing so turn thousands of people away from a truly enjoyable reading experiences. Sadly, such is the case for both ALMOST PARADISE and SHINING THROUGH.

Do yourself a big favor and beware the screen. Both of these books are marvelous romances, and it took me a long time to get around to reading them, for I was a snob, and didn't 'read romances'. The joke was on me however, where these two novels are concerned, for they have great characters and such stories of love! SHINING THROUGH is also a W.W.II thriller, with the heroine infiltrating the house of a Nazi official. The love of nation and of freedom is also accented. In ALMOST PARADISE, the romance of Jane and Nicky begins before they were born, and the book takes us through their lifetimes... It made me laugh out loud on one page then had me in tears a few pages later. You will need several kleenex to get through the last few pages, trust me. The trick in both books is that Susan Isaacs makes us care passionately about her characters.

Both books are equally hard to put down once you start, but what do you care? It's not like you have a movie to watch.

I keep coming back to this book!

I have attempted some other Susan Isaacs books and was disappointed, so it may be surprising that this book has a constant place on my "frequently read" bookshelf. Rather than discuss the plotline (I think the editorial review does that succinctly enough), let me try to convey to you the experience of actually reading the book.
The singlemost outstanding feature of this book is the screaming reality with which Isaacs develops characters. One reviewer was apparently upset that the narrator felt too little sympathy for the Germans (and described her boss, rather than "showing" what he was like). These details actually contribute greatly to my love of the book, as the editorializing narrator (Linda Voss) demonstrates her own personality through the way in which she communicates. She only describes her boss as "perfect"? Exactly--she's blinded by her feelings. Not sympathetic towards the Germans? Of course not--the character is an extremely cynical, stubborn woman who is working for the U.S. Government during the war. Perhaps, then, the best feature of the narration is the consistency which Isaacs employs; assuming that you are able to recognize literary tricks, you should have no problem differentiating between Linda's views and the facts of her world.
As for the plot itself, despite frequent rereading, this book keeps me spellbound from the first chapter until the last. At times, the plot twists are truly surprising; other times, the story is unsurprising but told saucily enough to hold my interest all the way through. As aforementioned, the narrator is such a compelling character that one gets the feeling of just listening to her chatter her way through the pages. I enjoy this book in one straight read; it helps maintain the feeling of Linda Voss, storyteller (as opposed to Susan Isaacs, author).
In short, then:
1. Linda Voss is THE most compelling narrator/character I have ever read.
2. The writing is consistent and precise.
3. The plot is interesting enough to be worthy of the gorgeous characterization.

Okay, I have to be very careful here. You see, I have to be if I want to do this work justice. I cannot emphasize enough what a great novel this is and what a truly, wonderful writer Susan Isaacs is. In 1941, when I was thirty-one and an old maid, while the whole world waited for war, I fell in love with John Berringer.
An office crush. Big deal. Since the invention of the steno pad, a day hasn't gone by without some secretary glancing up from her Pitman squiggles and suddenly realizing that the man who was mumbling "...and therefore, pursuant to the above..." was the one man in her life who could ever bring her joy.
So there I was, a cliche with a number 2 yellow pencil: a working firl from Queens who'd lost her heart to the pride of the Ivy League. END
Isaac's hooks you in and never lets you go. The main character, Linda Voss, is a wonder. She is a heroine unlike any other. She is and always will be wonderfully funny, sometimes mocking, but never boring. All of Isaac's characters are soo human; they are never perfect; they all have flaws. You may not like some of them, but all of them are understandable.
I shall forever be grateful to Isaacs for writing this masterpiece. So, please, please, I cannot stress this enough, please go borrow, buy, or steal this book and try it out. You'll fall in love with it. I know I did.

As an English professional, I highly recommend this book.

The parallels, the characterization, the foreshadowing, the dynamic evolving characters... this is an excellent example of modern American fiction at its highest level. Our protagonist, Linda Voss, is a real woman recognizably full of her own illusions and strengths, gets involved in the catalyst of WWII, thereby learning what really matters to her as a woman, an American, and a Jew. Miss Isaacs is able, with her impressive understanding of WWIIand humanity in general (which asks the questions Who am I? What do I really want? Why is this happening to me? How can I survive? How can I emerge victorious?), to paint the human condition against a background of war that is didactic while at the same time entirely recognizable. A critical yet loyal Isaacs fan, I believe this book is my supreme favorite of all her work, and I also believe it's my favorite book, period.

Allen R. Miller, Ph.D., is a founding fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. He is a licensed psychologist with extensive clinical experience and has devoted much of his time and work to the study of mood and anxiety disorders. Miller is the director of WellSpan Behavioral Health Services of Southcentral Pennsylvania and is a member of the American Psychological Association. His fortunes cycle between rags and riches , as he searches for his father. Revenge takes the sword to victory while romance peppers his experiences with charming relationships with intelligent, beautiful, and powerful women. The plethora of characters filling these pages move the old world into the reader's world. A great read.

Read it 20 years ago, and it's still a great read. The book reflects its author's deep scholarship and facile understanding of the 12th-century period. Louis L'Amour's prose is poetic at times, yet always dashing and manly. Perhaps more could have been done with the father-son relationship toward the end of the book, for one is left wanting to know more about Kerbouchard senior, the corsair. Still and all, this may be the single best way to acquaint a reader with Dark Age lives and times.

About the Author

Mary Irish is a garden writer, lecturer, and educator who lived in Arizona for 25 years. She is the author of many books, including Gardening in the Desert (also published by the University of Arizona Press). For more than a decade, she served as the Director of Public Horticulture at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. She has been a gardening columnist for the Arizona Republic newspaper and has served as a consultant on many large-scale landscaping projects. She now teaches classes and conducts workshops on a wide variety of topics in desert gardening.

Life-Wisdom from a Desert Garden

"A truly comfortable garden is one where all the lives with whom we share it become intertwined, a place where most lives are tolerated, indeed welcome, and where a moderate live-and-let-live approach is enough to settle our differences."

When I read those words in the Introduction to A Place All Our Own, Mary Irish's story of the desert yard she and her husband Gary tended for two decades in Arizona's Sonoran Desert, my first thought was, I want to live in that garden! A place where most lives are "tolerated, indeed welcome," sounds like my kind of community, whether it be garden, town or whole nation.

This tale of the evolution of a xeric but bountiful Scottsdale yard shows how Irish and her husband come to terms with the harsh reality of gardening in the desert, not by overcoming climate, soil, landscape and wildlife but by coming to understand and thrive in an environment where the relentlessly hot and bone-dry months of late spring and early summer drive many people inside to turn up their air-conditioning, and rain--when it comes--pours down with such intensity that dry washes become muddy torrents capable of washing away trees and cars.

The chapters chronicle the growth and change of the garden itself ("The Back," "The Front," "The Outback," and "The Patios") as well as the lives which inhabit it ("Birds," "Animals," "Bugs," and lastly, "People"). Irish's keen eye, passion for plants, and generous sense of humor enliven this tale of growing a garden in which gardeners, plants, residents wild and not, and landscape are intertwined in a lively and fascinating community.

A Place All Our Own is a story of plants and plant obsession, of weather and insects, of bird song and flower displays. It's peppered with plant names, both in English and the odd language of science, a mix of Green and Latin that may seem undigestible at first. Don't be deterred; keep reading. Like the best of garden memoir--Joan Dye Gussow's books come to mind, for example--it's full of garden-grown wisdom about life and how to live it:

I think if all our gardens inspired us to live more carefully with each other, instead of insisting on our dominance over all the rest, it would be a more peaceful and richer world. In the end all our interests are the same: find a good mate, get a good meal, live in a safe, secure place, raise smart, good looking kids. It's hard enough in the best of times; the least we can do is create gardens that help that along as best we can.

Hear, hear! And, I would add, communities and nations too.

Excellent Read for Gardeners

This is a great book by a most knowledgeable gardener familiar with the difficulties of gardening in the low desert of Arizona. The fact that it focuses on her own experiences over the years gives insight and thoughtfulness on the philosophy of gardening. Not a "how to" book but a charming read by a gardener of extensive experience and deep interest in the joys of gardening.

A Must for Phoenix Area Gardeners

This book is the best I've read with wonderful personal information on making a garden in the Phoenix area. Gardening here is like nowhere else in the country and Mary Irish's personal experiences on all aspects of gardening are terrific. Although she is an professional in this area, she writes for the average home gardener and the book is a joy to read.
