If one were to diagram Canin's fictional form, it would have to be of classical proportions: clean, noble, and golden. His latest book presents us with four beautifully told long short stories. In each, a man muses over his past and realizes how little control he has had over pivotal moments in his life. "Accountant" is a gripping variation on the turtle and the hare fable. The turtle, and narrator, is Abba Roth, a serious student turned dutiful accountant. The hare is Eugene Peters, Roth's academically disinclined boyhood friend who was able to parlay his enthusiasm for auto mechanics into a hugely lucrative business. Now solidly middle-aged, they have a showdown of sorts at a fantasy baseball camp overseen by none other than the great Willie Mays. As Roth surprises everyone with his able performance on the field and incredible awkwardness everywhere else, he finally gives into his deeply buried "impulse for uproar and disorder." The title story also tells the tale of a methodical, even fussy man brought up short by the bold, unscrupulous acts of richer and more powerful figures. In each story, Canin proves himself adept at articulating moments of profound embarrassment followed by flashes of self-knowledge that are either invigorating or demoralizing. Moving and memorable. I hate Ethan Canin because...

...my wife used to work at Houghton Mifflin whose vaunted Trade Division published Ethan Canin when he first started. All the 25 year old women of HMCO were in love with this guy who wrote beautifully, was excessively handsome (see book jacket and be your own judge...what do I know?) and was slumming at Harvard Medical School to become an MD. OK, so it has taken me about 12 years of marriage before I could bring myself to pick up Dr. Canin's work. And what do I think?
Not too bad. If you like terrific writing. If you are a fan of great American story tellers like Fitzgerald, O'Hara, Cheever.
If you like baseball. If you have ever been part of a family. If you are left brained or for that matter right brained...well you get the picture. I concede. This Canin dude has it all, and I recommend you add him to your reading table.
(Just don't let your wife see the bookjacket.)

Each Story Deserves a Rating

It's not easy to assign one rating to this book. It's not a novel--it's a compilation for four stories, each about 50 pages in length. The stories vary in quality and deserve to be looked at independently, though there are some common themes. For one, all of Canin's narrators are male. Second, baseball is mentioned more than once. Finally, all his characters seem to be supremely flawed, which I guess is the author's attempts at making them more realistic, but the characters never actually seem real. In three of the stories the narrators seem to suffer from the same flaw--they're arrogant and stupid. They get themselves into the type of predicaments you expect from network sit-coms. It left me wondering if the author is giving us insight to his own personality, or if this is just how a doctor who attended Harvard views the rest of us.

The four stories included are:

The Accountant (2 stars): The story is narrated by the titular accountant. Two childhood friends grow apart when one chooses college and the other goes directly into the workforce. The story is about the mistakes the accountant has made in life and the smug attitude that prevents him from realizing his missteps.

Batorsag and Szerelem (2 stars): This one is a coming-of-age tale narrated by a boy whose eccentric brother is extremely good at math. The older brother is also hiding something from his family. This story had a ton of potential, but I just felt like it wasn't executed well at all. It jumps around a lot and there's not enough character development. I believe there was enough story here for a novel; the author just didn't take the time.

City of Broken Hearts (4 stars): This one is a well-written, somewhat tragic story about a man in his sixties who is recently divorced and having trouble adapting to single life as well as relating to women and his son, who is attending college on the other side of the country. When the son visits his father in Boston, the two go to a ball game together, since baseball is the old man's passion. The father in this story is a sympathetic character. It's easy to understand his confusion and frustration. His baseball team lets him down, his wife has left him for another man, and his son is arrogant and so interested in proving he's a modern, sympathetic man that he doesn't take time to let his father remain part of his life.

The Palace Thief (5 stars): The best story in the bunch. A young teacher at a prestigious prep school feels some sympathy for a troubled student, which leads to him making some errors in judgement. The story revolves around their teacher-student relationship, as well as their relationship 40 years later. All of the stories in the book are compelling, but this one is the best. The main character is still flawed, arrogant, and perhaps stupid in his choices, but this novel offers the best character study and it's easily the stand out of the bunch.

A Story for Every Season

Ethan Canin's The Palace Thief is a collection of four short novellas that are all connected by the same themes; that of human nature and that emptiness we often feel deep within us whenever things are tough. Three of these stories are worth being praised, while the fourth might have been better had it been in a different collection.
The title story is probably the best of the whole book (and, also comes last, save the best for last right?). Here, we have a teacher who is faced with his greatest challenge, one that will span over many decades, one that will leave him changed forever. This story is touching and very affecting, about one man's struggle with morality. A real gem. My second favorite story was Batorsag & Szerelem, a moving story about one boy and his struggles brought upon being the youngest of the family. He is ceaselessly compared to his older brother, who is more intelligent and popular than he is. Living up to his big brother's reputation is one thing he will learn to try and passby in order to be happy with himself.
The story City of Broken Hearts is a very moving story about one man's realization of his life's emptiness. William is divorced and misses his son, who lives in another city. When his son comes back for a visit, he tries to come to peace with the past. But it is only when his son sets him up on a blind date that William will realize that he needs to fill the emptiness that is slowly eating him up.
After these great stories, it's kind of a downer to think back on the book's first story, entitled Accountant. Although the story is quite original and entertaining, it lacked the power and writing skills the author displayed so perfectly with the following three stories. Another story about a family man who has never been really happy with himself, this story is also one that deals with self realization and self depreciation. An enjoyable read, if only that.
Canin displays a great range of human emotions in this short collection. His writing is very affecting and powerful. His choice of words is always delibarate and purposeful. Every sentence has a meaning and leads somewhere, unlike other stories in collections by lesser authors, where half of it is composed of emptiness and the other half of a very weak plot and paper-thin characters. You will find none of that in this book. The Palace Thief is a highly engaging collection by one of the best new voice in dramatic fiction.

This is one of the best resources for working with the Mexican-American population, specifically, as opposed to "Latino" in general. I used it as a resource for a graduate school paper and found that Flores has included a lot more detail and history of the Mexican-American people than most authors in the field.

This book combines three earlier books by Ortiz: Going for the Rain ( LJ 1/77), A Good Journey ( LJ 5/15/78), and Fight Back: For the Sake of the People, for the Sake of the Land (1980). In his introduction, Ortiz explains that one of his functions as a writer has been to demystify language. His poetry is a testament to the care he takes in saying what he has to say simply, precisely, and with regard for the intimacy between reader and poem. As a Native American (Acoma Pueblo) writer, Ortiz feels that he must be committed to both his art and its relationship to the social, cultural, and political issues affecting his people. His poems--whose titles, like "Apache Love" and "The Creation According to Coyote," reflect his themes--eloquently convey the sadness born of the suffering Native Americans have endured at the hands of their conquerors. But they also convey hope and the vision of a people whose traditions are the foundation of the soul of this land called America. Highly recommended.

Entries range in length depending upon the topic. For example, an entry on Generalized anxiety disorder comes in at around a page, whereas one on Excessive drinking and health consequences is 16 pages long. About the Author
JOSEPH A. ANGELO, JR., a retired U.S. Air Force officer (lieutenant colonel), is currently a consulting futurist and technical writer. He has a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Arizona and served as a nuclear research officer in the U.S. Air Force (1967-1987) in a variety of scientific positions involving nuclear weapons development and nuclear treaty monitoring. He is also an adjunct professor in the College of Engineering at Florida Tech, specializing in nuclear radiation protection and waste management. Dr. Angelo is the author of 15 other technical books, including Space Technology (Greenwood, 2003) and Space Nuclear Power (co-authored with David Buden).

Viola Cordova was the first Native American woman to receive a PhD in philosophy. Even as she became an expert on canonical works of traditional Western philosophy, she devoted herself to defining a Native American philosophy. Although she passed away before she could complete her life’s work, some of her colleagues have organized her pioneering contributions into this provocative book.

In three parts, Cordova sets out a complete Native American philosophy. Where Are You From?

Doctor Viola Cordova, Jicarilla Apache and Hispanic, dedicated her career to interpreting a Native American `worldview'. Unfortunately, in 2002, before she could complete her life's work, she died of a brain aneurysm. This book, How It Is: The Native American Philosophy of V. F. Cordova, is a loving tribute by some of her colleagues, who have attempted to organize her work according to her beliefs.

The editors/authors have arranged Cordova's essays, poems, and papers in three sections that they hope will answer the three questions she insisted were essential to understand Native American thinking.

1. What is the world?

2. What is a human being?

3. What is the role of a human being in the world?

According to Doctor Cordova, all philosophies and religions derive their legitimacy from the point of view of the dominant culture, i.e. White North American which itself derives from the European and Western points of view. Throughout this book, she demonstrates how the "dominant" culture defines other cultures, peoples, languages, intellect, art and spirituality. It is the benchmark by which all indigenous peoples on the planet are judged. Even thriving ancient cultures, such as the Chinese, were forced to be legitimized by the standards of the white European male, who claims to be the apex of cultivation, spirituality, refinement and intellect. Cordova hints at the arrogance.

"I ... decided to study white people," she is quoted. "I wanted to be a `White Expert'. Survival required that I know the enemy."

Cordova boldly tackles the problematic issues that her peers and numerous scholarly predecessors consistently and diplomatically avoided. Even before she received a PhD in classical Western philosophy, Cordova was reading the works of the great thinkers from history. She writes that before entering college, she had already read more books than on any recommended reading list. She dedicated her career, as a teacher, writer and scholar, to defining a Native American philosophy.

According to Cordova's research and beliefs, the world through Native American eyes, is a living organism that sustains all life, including its human inhabitants. They are neither better nor less than the Earth. Each is dependent on the other to continue to live. All creatures on the planet are part of this network of interdependence. Human beings become human when they learn their roles as inhabitants within their locale, and their group or community. Language is the binding glue. Just as there are many geographic locales, there are many languages. Diversity and harmony in all things ensure continued prosperity. Human beings, by their actions, can preserve the `balance' or they can destroy it by being greedy, cruel and acquisitive.

Native Americans view the Earth as friendly and nurturing. She is often referred to as Mother. She sustains, but is subject to misuse and abuse. The thinking human inhabitants must take care of her. The dominant culture views the Earth as something hostile, threatening and not alive. They clear the forests, dam the rivers, pave the ground and build fences. They remove resources, not thinking of the lives they are disrupting or how they are damaging the planet. When one belongs to the Earth, and all Creation are your relatives and sustainers, how can you violate them?

Other points of view discussed include religion. The Native Americans are at peace with a benevolent, universal power that guides all life. Native Americans have not fallen from grace and do not have to spend their Earth walk doing penance. Westerners have problems accepting a sustaining, but very abstract power that has no beginning or no end and is present everywhere, all the time, in everything.

Cordova writes about diabetes, alcoholism and suicide rampant in Native American communities today. When a Native American is removed from his social structure, conflicts happen. Physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health break down. Identity becomes clouded and loneliness often becomes overwhelming. A Native American defines himself by his community, his clan, his role in the group and his contributions to others in his circle. Even when language is forgotten, the ties to the group are strong and essential. Blood memories, it has been called. Colonialist attempts to "civilize" indigenous peoples speak for themselves.

When one Native American meets another in the cities, the first question is: Where do you come from? The response will tell him everything he needs to know about you.

How It Is is a challenging read; however, it is filled with poetry and warmth. Scholars of philosophy and religion will find much here to mull over. Economics and business students will be cautioned about their responsibilities toward the planet. The consequences of over-development, misuse of resources, political arrogance and unbridled population growth are discussed.

Best intro to native american world views.

This is an excellent introduction to native American philosophy written by one of the first native women (Jicarilla Apache) to become a PhD philosoper. She writes from the perspective she learned as a native person and contrasts those views with contemporary western philosophy. Wish I had had this book when I was working on my degree studying Oxfordian linguistic analysis at Madison too many years ago. Would definitely have made my papers a bit more interesting. With the current popularity of "shamanism" this should be required reading for anyone on that path.

Best book about how to save the World while learning about Aboriginal Culture

I do a lot of hiking and meditation and found this book fascinating and illuminating of the current human condition in the world, and of Aboriginal culture and spirituality. If you are looking to understand either, I highly recommend it. I mentioned in the title that it has a lot to say about saving the World. It does. It really illustrates how we have as a global society reached the painted corner we are in today. Unlimited expansion, irresponsible exploitation of natural and renewable resources, runaway commercialism and financial chaos are all much more understandable after reading 'How it is' by V.F. Cordova.

If you are interested in global economics, politics, or leadership, this would be a good read. If you are interested in saving the World, or living in possibly more responsible ways, again, I would recommend it to you. It will provide some provocative insights and questions.

When I think of it now, I can't think of any human being alive who would not benefit from reading 'How It Is', by V.F. Cordova. It is an absolutely provocative read.

If you only read one book this year, I recommend 'How It Is'.
