When Raymond's brother, sent to bring Bibianna back, is shot by the young woman's new lover, an old friend of Kinsey's, both Bibianna and Hannah/Kinsey are taken to jail, where Kinsey secretly agrees to join a statewide fraud investigation. You have to read it twice

This one largely takes place in the Los Angeles barrio where Kinsey is (kind of) undercover investigating insurance fraud and murder for the California Indemnity Company. It's the last one in the series to have a major CIC connection.
You have to re-read this after you've finished because a final three-word sentence stands the whole plot on its head. An even better reason for re-reading is to savor Grafton's English prose style. When she gets a whole building to describe she slightly prolongs things too much, but I love descriptions like this one, of a garage "The late afternoon sun slanted onto the cracked concrete floor in tawny yellow stripes. The air smelled of oil, old tires. and hot metal."

This is an excellent book, one of the most inspiring true life stories shared in an honest and open way with many 'how to' examples. We all go through valleys in life wondering 'how to' cope but Jeris Bragan shows how even in one of the deepest pits anyone can be in, he can be victorious by putting into practice the principals of the Word of God and love of Jesus. Wow, couldn't put it down - thank you Amazon for making second hand copies available and sending them quickly and in good condition all the way to Australia! This book and testimony of the Grace of God will be shared with many, I have also ordered copies of other books written by Jeris and look forward to receiving them in the next few weeks.

The custom of making small artifacts and leaving them in churches, as a method of offering thanks or requesting divine intervention, has long been a part of religious worship. This practice is particularly important among the Catholic Hispanic and Native American populations of Arizona and northern Mexico. Oktavec, who has studied the practice for over 20 years, describes its European genesis but focuses primarily on the Native and Hispanic influences. Her interviews with persons leaving the objects at churches form the basis for her study. She also evaluates collections of the artifacts, called milagros (miracles), from two churches. Oktavec's volume is the most extensive study of this religious practice available. It will obviously be important to researchers of the Catholic Church and the Southwest. Oktavec's book provides a thorough history of milagros (the usage actually originated in Europe and was brought to the New World with the conquistadors). She talks with persons who have had their prayers answered and observes many of the faithful as they visit statues of their patron saints to request favors or blessings. Milagros are usually left as an expression of thanks for favors granted or as a tangible reminder to the saint that the favor still needs granting. However, as Oktavec discovers, they are increasingly being used in jewelry and other decorative arts.
