I have read many, many books on this subject. Brown has written an easy yet very informative read. He has an excellent grasp on the three monotheistic religions and their interaction. He outlines how Islam's tenets effect its political role. Well done.

Rinehart Photograph Collection features one hundred photographic portraits taken during the very late nineteenth century by professional Frank A. Rinehart. Rinehart practiced his trade upon Native Americans in their traditional dress during the an event known as the Indian Congress; his landmark photography, which unlike that of others did not pander to shameless stereotypes, rests in the Haskell Indian Nations University today and is widely regarded as one of the best photographic documentaries of the era. The aim of this four-volume set is to spotlight some 400 works that have been censored, banned, or condemned because of their political, social, religious, or sexual content. The entries, which include a summary, censorship history, and brief bibliography, range widely from Aristotle through Galileo and on up to Adolf Hitler and Judy Blume. Such well-known prohibited works as de Sade's 120 Days of Sodom, the Communist Manifesto, and Huckleberry Finn are included here, but so are many other works that are now less controversial, e.g., Milton's Areopagitica and Uncle Tom's Cabin. Some of the censorship histories are several pages long, but others are very short; Born on the Fourth of July gets only 50 words. Though most of the works are worth notice, too many describe fairly vapid objections: Fail-Safe was challenged by a school librarian who thought the book would undermine "America's confidence in their defense system." But as one might expect, many of the entries, such as the one for The Satanic Verses, are harrowing. Prepared by well-qualified scholars who have written and lectured extensively on censorship, the set is a very readable gathering of much useful information. It provides more depth and is more current than either Anne L. Haight's Banned Books (1978. 4th ed.) or ALA's Banned Books Resource Guide (1995). (Index not seen.)APeter A. Dollard, Alma Coll. Previously published in 1989, these four volumes provide a survey of more than 400 titles that have been subjected to censorship by school boards, governments, religious institutions, and other bodies. Within each volume, titles are arranged alphabetically, and entries include brief publishing information, a summary of the book's content, a censorship history, and a short list of further reading. Some 50 entries are new. The political volume has added 10 entries, among them Ha Jin's 1999 novel Waiting , denounced in China for portraying Chinese people as backward; the Chinese publication was canceled. The volume on religious grounds now has entries for five Harry Potter books. Fourteen entries, including one for Sari Says , an advice book for teens, have been added to the sexual grounds volume. Another 14 entries have been added to the social grounds volume, among them Marion Dane Bauer's Am I Blue? and Francesca Lia Block's Baby Be-Bop . Well researched, one sided

Spoiler, but you probably heard it before: the Virgin of Guadalupe was a late creation of the Spanish criollos who they thought they were a divinely chosen people (something like the Manifiest Destiny criollo version) and they invented the story that the Virgin herself was blessing the Spanish born in Mexican lands (versus the Spanish born in Spain)... but not precisely the indians. Poole's interpretation is entirely political and a little conspiracy theory. To his credit Poole presents however an impressive collection of old sources but anything that doesn't fits his view he dismisses quickly. This book should probably be updated to include a discussion of the Codex Escalada. It would be interesting to see what professor Poole has to say about it. I give it four stars for the impressive work of compiling and discussing every historical source.

Well researched book into Our Lady of Guadalupe

Five stars for the scholarly massive book this is. Amazing research. Our Lady of Guadalupe is not an article of faith for faithful Catholics. You can still be a good Catholic and not believe in Our Lady of Guadalupe. There was an article in the LA Times long ago about the Bishop in charge of where Our Lady of Guadalupe resides and he didn't even believe in it, or so said the article from my memory. It would make sense it was a vehicle to bring the Indians on board with Catholic belief and to give them hope as they were so persecuted even by the Church. It's a beautiful image at any rate.

As a publisher, one of the things I hate the most is when big screen movies and made-for-TV movies take really well written, interesting stores and make horrible movies out of them And in doing so turn thousands of people away from a truly enjoyable reading experiences. Sadly, such is the case for both ALMOST PARADISE and SHINING THROUGH.

Do yourself a big favor and beware the screen. Both of these books are marvelous romances, and it took me a long time to get around to reading them, for I was a snob, and didn't 'read romances'. The joke was on me however, where these two novels are concerned, for they have great characters and such stories of love! SHINING THROUGH is also a W.W.II thriller, with the heroine infiltrating the house of a Nazi official. The love of nation and of freedom is also accented. In ALMOST PARADISE, the romance of Jane and Nicky begins before they were born, and the book takes us through their lifetimes... It made me laugh out loud on one page then had me in tears a few pages later. You will need several kleenex to get through the last few pages, trust me. The trick in both books is that Susan Isaacs makes us care passionately about her characters.

Both books are equally hard to put down once you start, but what do you care? It's not like you have a movie to watch.

Shining Through shines

I read this book when it was first released in the late 80's, following Almost Paradise which is my favorite book of Susan Isaacs. I have never re-read any book, with the exception of these 2. Both books have so much detail and character development, accompanied with Isaac's quick wit and sense of humor. I will read them both again in another 20 years.
