This first of 12 volumes in a projected monument to music by women presents true cause for celebration. Reading these works of careful scholarship and music editing by 18 contributors is like attending a series of seminars. Each of 20 composers, from the 9th-century's Kassia to Claudia Sessia (fl. 1613), is treated through a biography, a setting in time and place, analysis of her work, comments on performance practice, and an extensive bibliography, all of which precede a modern edition of her music, represented by one to eight pieces. Editorial procedures are explained for each composition, and translations are given for all vocal works, allowing the works to be not only studied but also performed. Because the editors were careful not to duplicate easily obtained scores, most of it is presented here in modern notation for the first time. Superb collection

This is volume one of what is planned as a twelve-volume set of musical scores with extensive information about each composer and her music. (Disclosure: I was among the contributors to some later volumes.) The books are not cheap--original price was $100 per volume--but are well worth the price. As of 2009 volumes one through eight are available.

Make a new and very intimate friend.

I have never read a book of essays from beginning to end but I could not put this one down. It reads like a novel with the depth of an extended poem. Each essay presents a journey into the interior of human heart--an intricate, rocky road through emotions and experiences entirely unique and yet completely understandable. Sometimes I felt like I was looking in the mirror, finding my whole life in a line, on a page. Other times I felt as if I had made a new and very intimate friend.
I chose this book because I have been struggling with a new-found disability and had read that Nancy Mairs had written about her experiences with Multiple Sclerosis in an essay with the gutsy title: "On Being a Cripple." I was delighted to hear Mairs treat this issue with pain and wisdom, and then move on to so many more aspects of her own life story. The writing is exquisite--complex, delicate, and blunt. The stories are gripping accounts of infidelity, depression, suicide, terror, appreciation, parenting, sex, mystery, loneliness, humor, writing, and love. The honesty with which she reveals details about herself and her family is unprecedented. And some sort of affiirmation comes with each gritty revelation, making the irreducible value of human experience once again apparent. Mairs is a feminist, but not in any formulaic manner. Her plea is that women be given the opportunity to explore all of the facets of their own humanity; that being locked in limited roles has caused so many of us to go "mad." Her poignant recollections of younger days are all but universal. Who has not felt different, alienated, self-effacing, and alone at least some time in their life? I cannot imagine anyone not being gripped by the courage and the genius of Mairs' honesty and introspection.

An Arzona Consciousness

My copy of "Plaintext" is dogeared because I've reread it a lot. I've also bought copies for friends. It's honesty and directness captured me immediately. I felt I was in the company of a real person who was not afraid to talk with me about her life. The religious component is important too because Mairs tells me about her spiritual struggles, her anger and loves. Her life in the Catholic church is exposed so that we can identify with her. She deals with questions we ask too. When this book was first published, I'd read nothing like it before. I'm an ordained woman and needed to confront some of the same issues dealt with here, marriage, unfaithfulness, doubts. I also loved the Arizona setting, since I live in northern Arizona and felt close to Mairs because we had that world in common.
This book is one treasure I'll never part with.

Plainly spoken - penetrates deeply

I discovered this book over a decade ago, and return to it every few years. It remains fresh with each visit. Mairs' writing is deceptively simple, and profoundly moving. Nothing sentimental, just a woman who faces her challenges in a direct way, and communicates her thoughts and feelings with remarkable honesty and clarity.

Life Immemorial

This wonderfully sensitive book has been a cherished possession since the late 70's when I was fortunate enough to have Ms. Hailey autograph my copy. Since, I have given this book to countless friends, old and young. I saw Barbara Rush brilliantly perform this one woman play adapted from the book and took all my friends to that also. Then thoroughly enjoyed the miniseries on NBC with Sally Field.

Currently, I am producing this play as a benefit for my local Women's Center in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. It will play in a small intimate theater Feb. 18, 19, 20.

I obviously love the book, the play, the message. Women everywhere are inspired to exhibit strength and independence with softness, grace and humor. Buy this for your daughters and granddaughters. Then, get the play produced in your town as a benefit for a local Women's Center or other agency that reaches out and supports women.

Any literary piece that is as relevant after 20+ years as it was the day it was written is pretty amazing!

A Model Guide for Women of all Ages

I have read and re-read this book over the years, and again this summer found it in my Beach Pack. For any age, EFH has produced a kind, gentle view of life as a woman who grew up knowing her place in the world, and yet being able to go beyond what her times would have expected of a woman. It is very much like finding old letters in a trunk, and I came to think of the writer as a matron of her times, giving to herself and all women the understanding that taking care of one's self, being able to be truly independent, is a key to freedom in every sense. Read it ladies. I read it at 20 and 30, and it reads just as well into the 40s and 50s. My mother's good friend in her 70s came upon it on my bookshelf, and it has become her favorite book of all times. Enjoy.

Wonderful poems and interviews

Wonderful poems and interviews exploring oral tradition and poetry, and staying grounded in Native American culture in the midst of the modern world. Includes a good sampling of contemporary writers, including the prolific Paula Gunn Allen, and N. Scott Momaday, author of the classic House Made of Dawn. One of my all-time favorites.

A lively story, complete with a thorough index - it's the first publication of this work in English as well. The chronicle presents background on the origin of the year count, the life of Quetzalcoatl and the wars of the Mexica.

An excellent scholarly work

The book is an excellent base for the study of prehispanic Mexico. It is extremely useful also for the student of Nahuatl language because it also offers the full original version of these texts in the companion volume. It gives a slightly different point of view to these two fundamental texts from the spanish translation by Primo Feliciano Velazquez. Although less poetic than the spanish version, it is probably closer to the litteral meaning of the nahuatl original, and thus very useful for the understanding of each fragment separately. It is a classical work which can be bought in full confidence.

This is an excellent, first class work translating an original manuscript of an interview of a native Mexica shortly after the conquest replete with Aztec myths, creation legends and history. For anyone seriously interested in Aztec times, its a "must".

As best as I can tell, it is an unfiltered, unbiased and neutral printing of the informant's own words with many helpful explanatory notes..
