Arizona Place Names, by Will Croft Barnes

Will Croft Barnes (1858–1937) first came to Arizona as a cavalryman and went on to become a rancher, state legislator, and conservationist. From 1905 to 1935, his travels throughout the state, largely on horseback, enabled him to gather the anecdotes and geographical information that came to constitute Arizona Place Names.

For this first toponymic encyclopedia of Arizona, Barnes compiled information from published histories, federal and state government documents, and reminiscences of "old timers, Indians, Mexicans, cowboys, sheep-herders, historians, any and everybody who had a story to tell as to the origin and meaning of Arizona names." The result is a book chock full of oddments, humor, and now-forgotten lore, which belongs on the night table as well as in the glove compartment.

Barnes' original Arizona Place Names has become a booklover's favorite and is much in demand. The University of Arizona Press is pleased to reissue this classic of Arizoniana, which remains as useful and timeless as it was more than half a century ago.

Review
"A somewhat eclectic, but unfailingly delightful, compilation of facts, folklore, humor, and personal opinion that has achieved the status of southwestern classic. . . . Fifty years after its first publication, it still ranks among the most important books published on the state."—Journal of Arizona History

"This paperback reissue of the original edition (1935) with a new foreward by Bernard L. Fontana will take another generation of readers on a delightful and exciting trip around Arizona stopping at such places as Wickyty-Wizz Canyon, Total Wreck, Christmas, Skull Valley, Freezeout Creek and Poker Mountain. Barnes' work remains an important contribution to Arizona history and literature. The enthusiasm of this pioneer soldier, rancher, and state legislator for his adopted state is contagious, as the new reader will soon discover."—Books of the Southwest

"Later editions have adopted the title and format, but the original Barnes has never been surpassed. 'Place Names' is a modest description, for the listings unleash a flow of history, folklore, geography, and etymology. And yes, even humor and romance. . . . If there is one indispensable Arizona book, Barnes's Arizona Place Names is it. Every man, woman, and child who sets foot in the Grand Canyon State should have this book at hand."—Arizona Highways

"Better buy a couple of copies, one for the car and one for whatever room you do your reading in."—Arizona Daily Star

This book will be the cornerstone of my Arizona library.
By A Customer
Ten years ago, someone at the University of Arizona Press decided to reissue this book and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate that person. Even though the book hasn't been updated since the mid 1930's, the text is of extreme value to the historian, researcher and casual reader as is. By reissuing the book the University performed a valuable public service.
With high hopes and expectations, I purchased this book with the intention of doing research on place names along the Santa Fe Railroad in Arizona. I am pleased to report that Arizona Place Names was the most valuable reference in assisting me with that project. But, for me, there was a bonus. The book also served to reacquaint me with the Arizona of my youth as I was born and raised in Yavapai County and often traveled with my parents around the state. It has rekindled interest in my roots, far exceeded my hopes and expectations and brought me back to better times in my life.
The author's style is more like a mentor and friend. There were times that I felt I was riding with him on horseback discussing the name origin of a nearby spring or butte. Factual and accurate, his style shows that he loved what he was doing. The text is short, to the point, and can be read by the casual reader who would like to sit back in the rocking chair or recliner and escape to Arizona.
What more can I say except if you have any interest in Arizona, this book has to be the cornerstone of your libary. Once you pick it up, it's hard to put down. Five stars -- and then some....

The original book (by Byrd H. Granger) is much better
By John D.
I ordered this book trying to replace my aging copy of Byrd H. Granger's "Arizona's Names - X Marks the Place" (ISBN 0918080185 Falconer Publishing, Tucson). I have to admit, after not seeing other books about Arizona place names (and there are a few) I have to say this book can never replace Granger's edition. Not like I hated the book, it's just the Granger book is far superior (and very hard to find) and loaded with a lot more information. The Granger book is 824 pages where this one is only 503. It is nice the book is reprinted and will not be forgotten, but if you can find the Granger book, get it instead.

All you need to know, and more.
By S. B Krueger
Fantastic review of the origins of all the place names in Arizona. Detailed, but with anecdotes from history to give life to the state. Great maps make finding everything easy. This books must have taken years to compile. If Arizona history interests you get this book.

What might result from hearing a particular song, wearing used clothing, or witnessing an accident? Ethnographic accounts of the Navajo refer repeatedly to the influences of events on health and well-being, yet until now no attempt has been made to clarify the Navajo system of rules governing association and effect. This book focuses on the complex interweaving of the cosmological, social, and bodily realms that Navajo people navigate in an effort alternately to control, contain, or harness the power manifested in various effects. Following the Navajo life-course from conception to puberty, Maureen Trudelle Schwarz explores the complex rules defining who or what can affect what or whom in specific circumstances as a means of determining what these effects tell us about the cultural construction of the human body and personhood for the Navajo. Schwarz shows how oral history informs Navajo conceptions of the body and personhood, showing how these conceptions are central to an ongoing Navajo identity. She treats the vivid narratives of emergence life-origins as compressed metaphorical accounts, rather than as myth, and is thus able to derive from what individual Navajos say about the past their understandings of personhood in a worldview that is actually a viable philosophical system. Working with Navajo religious practitioners, elders, and professional scholars. Schwarz has gained from her informants an unusually firm grasp of the Navajo highlighted by the foregrounding of Navajo voices through excerpts of interviews. These passages enliven the book and present Schwarz and her Navajo consultants as real, multifaceted human beings within the ethnographic context.

Review
"A remarkable and significant contribution to Navajo studies, the study of culture as practice, and anthropological research on religion, personhood, and the body. . . . A fine and important piece of ethnography." —Carolyn Epple, American Anthropologist"An impressive study of Navajo values . . . To my knowledge, no other work by an anthropologist represents the intellectual depth of an American Indian tribe in such material terms. . . . The book will reward the careful reader with knowledge necessary to understand what artifacts are saying about history, a world view and a way of life more intricate and profound than baskets and pots on silent display." —Paul Zolbrod, El Palacio

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS OKAY IF YOU APOLOGIZE
By Cande C
THE STORY, SEE PAGE 58, TELLS THE TALE OF A DRUNK HUSBAND WHO VIOLENTLY STABS HIS WIFE TO DEATH. A MIRACLE OCCURS AND SHE IS BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE. THE HUSBAND APOLOGIZES AND "THEY BOTH LIVE HAPPILY TO A RIPE OLD AGE." HE WAS NOT ARRESTED--NO REPERCUSSIONS. THE ONLY CONDITION UNDER WHICH THIS MATERIAL MIGHT BE USED IS THROUGH THE TEACHER TELLING THE STUDENTS THAT AT ONE TIME IT WAS CONSIDERED OKAY FOR A DRUNK TO VIOLENTLY STAB HIS WIFE TO DEATH AND NOT EVEN BE INVESTIGATED OR ARRESTED. tHE MURDERER WAS THOROUGHLY FORGIVEN AFTER APOLOGIZING. THE LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HAD THIS BOOK ON IT APPROVED CORE LITERATURE LIST FOR GRADE 6-9. IT WAS BROUGHT TO THE LAUSD'S ATTENTION SEVERAL YEARS AGO, BUT THE REVIEW COMMITTEE THOUGHT IT WAS ACCPTABLE AND WOULD REMAIN ON THE CORE LITERATURE READING LIST. IT IS HOPED THAT IT IS NOW OFF THE APPROVED LIST.

Great read, very nostalgic of the Mexican-American culture.
By S. Gutierrez
These are the stories I grew up with. We would sit on the porch on summer evenings and my grandmother would spin these yarns that would hold our attention for hours. Some of the stories vary slightly but the gist is very much the same. It brought back a lot of memories. Now I have to share it with my kids.

Speaking for the Generations: Native Writers on Writing (Sun Tracks), by Simon J. Ortiz

Now it is my turn to stand. At Acoma Pueblo meetings, members rise and announce their intention to speak. In that moment they are recognized and heard. In Speaking for the Generations, Acoma Pueblo poet Simon Ortiz brings together contemporary Native American writers to take their turn. Each offers an evocation of herself or himself, describing the personal, social, and cultural influences on her or his development as a writer. Although each writer's viewpoint is personal and unique, together they reflect the rich tapestry of today's Native literature.

Of varied backgrounds, the writers represent Indian heritages and cultures from the Pacific Northwest to the northern plains, from Canada to Guatemala. They are poets, novelists, and playwrights. And although their backgrounds are different and their statements intensely personal, they share common themes of their relationship to the land, to their ancestors, and to future generations of their people. From Gloria Bird's powerful recounting of personal and family history to Esther Belin's vibrant tale of her urban Native homeland in Los Angeles, these writers reveal the importance of place and politics in their lives. Leslie Marmon Silko calls upon the ancient tradition of Native American storytelling and its role in connecting the people to the land. Roberta J. Hill and Elizabeth Woody ponder some of the absurdities of contemporary Native life, while Guatemalan Victor Montejo takes readers to the Mayan world, where a native culture had writing and books long before Europeans came.

Together these pieces offer an inspiring portrait of what it means to be a Native writer in the twentieth century. With passion and urgency, these writers are speaking for themselves, for their land, and for the generations.

Amazon.com Review
Whether reared in Amarillo, Texas, or on the Six Nations Reserve in southern Ontario, the nine Native writers anthologized here cite amazingly similar influences. Each claims a deep connection to the land. The urge to tell stories, they say, stems from being raised in a culture that is rich in storytelling--that has relied, in fact, on storytelling. "The ancient Pueblo people," writes Leslie Marmon Silko in the book's opening essay, "depended upon collective memory through successive generations to maintain and transmit an entire culture."

Now, though, they find themselves writing in a language that is not culturally their own. In fact, it is the language of the colonialist. Unlike Okanagan, says Jeannette C. Armstrong, which, having never been written down, is "devised solely for use by the human voice and the human body," English "is deaf to music and only chances on it through the diligent work of writers." Many of these writers feel an obligation both to protect and promote their Native culture, and to educate the outside world about that culture. "I consider it a moral responsibility of the Native writer," says Victor D. Montejo, a Mayan from Guatemala, "to be a voice for the people and to let the world know about not only the achievements of his or her people but also the crimes committed against them." And finally there is the conflict of audience (is one writing for Natives, or for other readers?) and the feeling sometimes that one is less a member of one's community than a spokesperson for or interpreter of it. "Once," says Elizabeth Woody, a Yakama-Warm Springs- Wasco-Navajo Indian, "a friend tried to coax me into going to a distant powwow with her by saying, 'Why read and write about Indians when you could just be one for a while?'" --Jane Steinberg

From Booklist
This tight, well-selected anthology makes its point clearly--namely, that it isn't possible to discuss Native American art without also discussing Native American sovereignty. Traditional connection with the land and, through it, with history, means that Native American writers today do not seek individual expression as much as they fulfill an ancient social role. Storytellers in the past did more than entertain or dramatize; they also taught values and traditions. Similarly, contemporary writers "speak for the generations," both past and to come. In addition, they speak for the land, naming its vital connections to humanity. Some might argue with Ortiz's theme, but Leslie Marmon Silko, Gloria Bird, Roberta Hill, and others testify to its power and its resonance within Native American culture and art today. Patricia Monaghan

"[Speaking for the Generations] gives voice to the need to observe the interdependence between land and people, as well as the need to listen to our ancestors." —Library Journal

This book was required reading for one of my favorite grad classes--but I would recommend it to anyone who reads about writing. Put it right up there on your shelf with King's "On Writing" and your college handbook. It will challenge you, inspire you, and make you think.

Over the past several decades, Mexican Americans have made an indelible mark on American culture through the music of bands such as Santana and Los Lobos, films such as Zoot Suit, and a wide range of literature, such as Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street. Now Charles Tatum introduces students to these and other forms of artistic expression in the first volume to provide a wide-ranging overview of Chicano popular culture. Tatum explores the broad and complex arena of popular culture among Americans of Mexican descent and explains what popular culture can tell them about themselves. Reviewing a range of expressive arts, from traditional forms to electronic media, he explains the differences and similarities between Chicano popular culture and that of other ethnic groups or of Anglo society and shows how Chicano arts reflect a people's traditions and heritage. The book's coverage focuses on five areas of popular culture. It explores
- Mexican American and Chicano music from the sixteenth century to the present day;
- cinema, focusing on Chicano films of the past three decades;
- newspapers, radio, and television, explaining the interrelationship between these media;
- literature, emphasizing fiction, theater, and poetry of the last thirty years;
- and fiestas, celebrations, and art, including mural and graffiti art. Tatum provides a brief overview of Mexican American social history, paying particular attention to changing cultural perspectives over the past 150 years and the evolution of el movimiento chicano. He also introduces theories of popular culture and makes them accessible to students, enabling them to better understand the material covered in the text. No other book offers such a wide-ranging introduction to these cultural expressions of Mexican Americans today. Chicano Popular Culture invites readers to share the excitement of these vital arts and, through them, to learn more about the uniqueness of America's fastest-growing minority. English Words from Latin and Greek Elements, by Thomas D. Worthen, R. L. Cherry Donald M. Ayers

Since 1965, Donald Ayers' English Words from Latin and Greek Elements has helped thousands of students to a broader vocabulary by showing them how to recognize classical roots in modern English words. Its second edition, published in 1986, has confirmed that vocabulary is best taught by root, not rote. The importance of learning classical word roots is already acknowledged by vocabulary texts that devote chapters to them. Why a whole book based on this approach? Ayers' text exposes students to a wider range of roots, introduces new English words in context sentences, and reinforces vocabulary through exercises. It promotes more practice with roots so that students learn to use them as tools in their everyday encounters with new words. English Words is written from the standpoint of English; it neither attempts to teach students Latin or Greek nor expects a knowledge of classical languages on the part of instructors. Its success has been demonstrated at both the secondary and college levels, and it can be used effectively with students in remedial or accelerated programs.

An Instructor's Manual (gratis with adoption) and a Workbook are also available.
