This book has filled my life with two big love stories! Love waits for you too.

This book has filled my life with love stories, at least two big ones. About 55 years ago at age 17, I fell in love with Jesus Christ. A dear church member gave me this book, THE DESIRE OF AGES. At first I was reluctant to read it, not trusting the credentials of the author. But then I said, "I'll read this book to test her out."

In my high school literature classes, I read some of the great writers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries--Thomas Carlyle, Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and others. They wrote well, although often it was a struggle to follow their involved style. Yet, I loved their essays, novels and poetry.

How would Ellen G. White measure up, being from about the same time period? So I started reading the first chapter. And then I found myself reading it aloud in my bedroom. Oh, what an ecstatic experience, both spiritual and literary! "You mean to tell me," I asked, "this woman had to quit formal education at age 9 because of an accident?" She displays such depth with clarity and simplicity, no pretense or author showing off!

To me much of this book was poetry in prose form. The very first sentence got me: "In the hearts of all mankind, of whatever race or station in life, there are inexpressible longings for something they do not now possess."

In the next three months I read aloud to myself the entire book. How that deepened my love for my Saviour--the Word made flesh! And now--this book's beautiful words fleshing out the life of Jesus Christ!

Now another love story. The following summer I attended a church retreat in North Dakota, I being from Saskatchewan, Canada. There I met the prettiest girl ever!--just arrived from the mission field with her folks. I thought she was at least 16. I fell in love with her. And she gave a talk (she was actually only 13 at the time) about her great-great-grandmother--Ellen G. White. Yes, the author of my favorite book on the life of Christ!

Long story short. We married 7 years later. We have been married for 49 years and are still very much in love. And "in the bargain" I also got a most loving Christian family.

Yes, the love of Christ brought me into His fold, and that fold includes my bride Martha, her loving famiy and so many loving fellow believers. In my research as a Christian writer, I've read dozens of books on the life of Christ. Some are topnotch. But my favorite remains "The Desire of Ages." As always I place the Bible above all books; I've read the New Testament over 75 times. Sure, one might have some theological interpretations different from what this book presents at times, but they are likely minor. Please, don't let these little differences stand in the way of your growing love for Jesus.

Here's my favorite "poem" from this book: "Christ was treated as we deserve, that we might be treated as He deserves. He was condemned for our sins, in which He had no share, that we might be justified by His righteousness, in which we had no share. He suffered the death which was ours, that we might receive the life which was His. 'With His stripes we are healed.'" (Page 25).

Encouraging book for my mama

I ordered this book for my mother after she requested it several times. Therefore, I cannot give my opinion on the book itself... however, I can tell you she loves it and is reading it when I enter her room every day. So glad to have found something so encouraging for her.

Absolute MUST READ !

I have read this several times. It is an EXCELLENT commentary on the life of Jesus Christ, replete with Scriptural references. You see what God is REALLY like, not an opinion expressed by someone who has never studied the Bible, but an account shared by the Bible itself and spoken from one who served Him and saw Him as Lord and best friend.
Beware, after you read this, not only will your life be changed but you will want to study the Bible for yourself to become close to Him !

It is a book that I purchase and give to friends, strangers and anyone who is searching for truth and meaning in life.

Great Book! Read it if you are an Adult Child of an Alchoholic-Cheap Therapy

Love this book, it's so helpful to understand my behaviors as a child of an alcoholic and when I over-react or get anxious about not being able to control life events, I pick this book up as a reminder as to why I act the way I do. I identified with the "perfect daughter" and "overachiever" , very helpful.

A gentle start on the road to recovery

Excellent book for those who don't know why their lives are a mess, why they keep getting into abusive relationships, why they don't laugh & have fun like other people, people who tear themselves apart for every imagined or real mistake, those who feel inferior and worthless, those like me who have always guessed (often incorrectly) at what normal is. Finally here are the answers millions of people need to let go of their crippling past and rediscover their future--one they want to be part of instead of dreading more of the same misery. The authors have been where we are, they know what they are talking about, they are US too. They have experience, compassion & empathy. They lovingly & gently open the doors to the truth for us, and this book could cause you to feel sad, angry, bitter, depressed but the next page will fill you with realistic hope (not the irrational hopes we're used to), belief in a happy future for yourself, motivation to start the journey of recovery from childhood abuse, neglect, trauma, denial, pain, etc. There is a thorough section on recovery groups and what to expect, how it works and so on, so that strangers to recovery will know what to expect, and maybe feel better about taking that 1st step--going to a meeting, finding a therapist, joining a group, reading books & workbooks, reaching out to safe others for support & more. I highly recommend this book to any one from a substance-abuse type family background, but also to people from dysfunctional families as well since all of the same principles apply. I also recommend Adult Children: The Secrets of Dysfunctional Families to those who can't relate to an alcoholic background at all, but who maybe grew up with an over-eating parent, an absent father, a mentally ill caretaker, etc. This is a gentle start for even the most recovery-resistant person. For myself, this book helped me see myself as that little terrified, abused child who was helpless, needy, neglected & denied, and begin to want to love, hug & heal MY inner self instead of running to rescue everyone else, for a change. It's my turn, and thanks to that book I finally believe in my journey and my future. I hope you will take the step and see for yourself what truths lay waiting to bring you relief & understanding.

I feel in love with the book,I couldn't put it down.

I would tell anyone who would like to read "Two from Galilee" they would be reading a very close to real life version of what may have taken place concerning the life of Mary and Joseph. Of course it is not taken word for word from the Bible, but the author knew the customs and the way of life for the Jewish people and went from there. It is truly a wonderful love story about Mary and Joseph and how they may have coped with there unexpected news of Mary being chosen to bear the Son of God. I truly loved the book, in fact I just recently read it again for the second time. I usually read a book one time and put it away, this little book was just as moving the second time around(I read it the first time right after it was published, and just reread it again)

Best Love Story Ever Told

When a friend recommended this book to me, I didn't really know what to expect. After I started reading "Two From Galilee," I absolutely fell in love with the book. Marjorie Holmes did an excellent job in portraying the characters in this novel. I could relate to Mary and Joseph and until reading this novel, I to failed to realize that they too were capable of feeling "human" emotions. I loved everything about the novel and am so looking forward to reading the next one, "Three From Galilee."

I wish it were still around - I've gone through two of them

The Prayer Book Office has been one of my number one books of common prayer over the past thirty years or so. This provide a nice one volume, together with the Daily Office Lectionary, way of staying on task with the Daily Offices of Morning and Evening Prayer, Noonday and Compline. I miss not being able to get another copy, I have worn out two of them, I highly recommend it to you if you ever see a copy.

The Prayer Book Office - Howard Galley

This is a wonderful resource for those who wish to say the Daily Office from an Anglo-catholic tradition. Sadly it is out of print and virtually impossible to come by. The copies I have seen run around $250 which is a little more than I paid for mine back in the 70s ($39.99 as I recall) If you do find one, SNAP IT UP. About 6 inches by 9 inches, the book is about an inch thick, making it the size of many Episcopal Prayer Books. Each of the Psalms includes an appropriate antiphon. In addition to the Collects for Sunday, there are Collects for the Saints as well as Major and Minor Feasts. I wish mine had held up better, but I got a lot of years use out of it.

I hope this is good news.

I hope this is good news...one does have options if you can't find this exact book. It has been reprinted...of sorts. It can be found in two eds., a two vol. set in leather and boxed and a larger one vol., also leather. The difference being, the two vol. set, of course, contains the same format plus the readings, RSV (I think). The one vol. (somewhat cumbersome as I remember) same format and reading, NRSV (I think); both are up in the $150. range. BUT...and there is always be a but, neither has the antiphons to the Psalter or the Canticles. Actually, I had thought of compiling a booklet of the antiphons and asking Church Publishing to print it. I think they are both printed by Church Publishing. I picked up the set (office bk. plus 4 vols of readings) in the mid '80s when I was a member of a small group of single priests, The Brothers of the Good Shepherd. I stayed with them as long as I was a priest in the Polish National Catholic Church...the connection was through the Old Catholics of Holland and Canterbury. Until a month or so ago, the book had been in storage and when I took it out it was like new, go figure. I really do like it, it's easy to understand and use. However, I would like to change a few lines in the psalms, it just a rhythm thing. But, I refuse to use the horrible rendition of the Te Deum and I don't care for what they did to the Magnificat...it's my own thing...I just use the traditional one in the back pages. I would suggest that if you really love this book, go ahead a buy it from Amazon you will not find it cheaper ($99. for imitation leather) anywhere. Well, I hope this has be helpful.

Sayre examines the history of the ranch and the bobwhite together, exploring the interplay of social, economic, and ecological issues to show how ranchers and their cattle altered the land—for better or worse—during a century of ranching and how the masked bobwhite became a symbol for environmentalists who believe that the removal of cattle benefits rangelands and wildlife. An intriguing and ground-breaking book

Sayre's book on ranching and endangered species uses a compact study area, the Altar Valley of Southern Arizona, to analyze various forms of human and 'natural capital.' The book is deep in the area's history, ecology and current resource management practices, and yet also steeped in theoretical arguments that make perfect sense given his overall argument. The Bobwhite Quail plays a central role in producing a landscape of "Nature" (big "N") that becomes the pivot-point for contemporary rural politics between ranchers, environmentalists, and federal agency workers. Really good research, and still accessible; kudos to the author.

Hayes, now an English professor and historian of her mother's Lingit tribe, poignantly relates the sad details of her youth and early adulthood, adroitly interspersing these often-sordid memories with stories of tribal history that have been passed on for generations. Living alternately with an aunt and her maternal grandmother due to her mother's stay in a tuberculosis sanitarium, and with no siblings or father for support, Hayes learns to fend for herself, combing the docks near the cannery where her grandmother works for discarded fish heads for their evening soup. In and out of detention homes as a teenager and failed relationships as an adult, she eventually returns to Juneau and her roots. There Hayes reclaims her heritage, especially the Lingit worship of and reliance on the land and all it supports, a way of life she hope to pass on to her grandchildren. One of the best memoirs I've read

This gorgeous and unusual book should be required reading for both lovers of memoir and anyone who lives in "Indian Country" (which, really, is most of us.) Hayes layers narratives of self, land, history and tribe in an unusual way that feels utterly organic. She also offers real insight into both the brokenheartedness and the joy that characterize modern Native people's experience. Though it is not without minor flaws, I give this book 5 stars because it is amazing and unique.

Deeply affecting story everyone should read

Ernestine Hayes has captured what it means to grow up with one foot in white culture, the other in a native way of life she must struggle to keep alive and burning in her heart. I loved the way native stories wove in and out of her experiences. I hope she has another book in the works because I want to read more of what she has to say.

Brilliant Memoir

I return to this memoir time and again -- it has become a touchstone. Hayes has written a brilliantly crafted memoir that evokes Tlingit oral tradition and values in its braided voice. This isn't the memoir of an individual, divided from territory, ancestry, ancient stories, rather the narrative of a being connected in a continuing and vibrant way to a culture that honors relatedness to the world. The memoir is moving, inspiring, and carries much-needed teachings. My volume is battered from so many readings. Battered and precious.
