About the Author
Dr. Elaine Graham-Kennedy is a Christian geologist who believes in the biblical account of Creation. She has spent her life studying issues of science and faith and has 14 years of field experience in Grand Canyon studying boulder beds and in Patagonia, Argentina where she studied dinosaur "nests." Dr. Kennedy completed her doctorate at the University of Southern California in 1991 and currently serves as an adjunct professor at Southwestern Adventist University, teaching and researching dinosaur beds at a field camp in Wyoming. Elaine has two daughters and currently resides in Riverside, California with her husband.

Dinosaurs, Where Did They Come From........"

I bought this book for my eleven-year-old grandnephew. He couldn't wait for me to end my visit so he could read it. When I called two days later to see if he was enjoying "Dinosaurs," he had already finished it.

This book interprets the science and history of these magnificent animals in the light of the Christian belief in creation. How wonderful to have an author who is an educated, practicing scientist, expert in the field, still going on "digs," and able to relate her discoveries in a manner which captivates our interest and attracts the eight-to-eighty reading public.

Awesome!

This book is so great! My son has really liked everything about dinosaurs since I can ever remember, but it has been hard to find one that comes from a biblical viewpoint. I really like how this author gives you facts to think about so you can come to the conclusions yourself. My son, age 7, absolutely loves it and we will all enjoy it for years to come. Thanks.

Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood:" after 45 years, still the best "true crime" book I've ever read.

Early in the morning of Sunday, November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, two men committed a horrific crime that gained national attention. They slaughtered four members of the Clutter family – Herb, a prosperous and well-respected farmer, his wife Bonnie, and their two teenage children, Nancy and Kenyon. The killers had slain all four Clutters with a shotgun; they had also slit Herb Clutter’s throat.

The day after the slayings, the “New York Times” printed a news article that brought the crime to national attention. Author Truman Capote read the article and decided to write a serialized account of it for the “New Yorker” magazine. That series of articles became the basis of Capote’s now famous book “In Cold Blood,” which tells the story of how two ex-convicts, acting on a tip from a fellow criminal, traveled 400 miles across Kansas in order to rob the Clutters of a rumored large sum of cash. It became a huge best-seller and spawned what Capote claimed was an entirely new genre letters: the “non-fiction novel.”

I first read “In Cold Blood” in 1971. It was required reading for a Modern American Literature college course I was then taking. At the time, I remember being very impressed with it. I thought it was a very disturbing story that was also extremely well told. I found myself held spellbound by Capote’s tale of these two men who journeyed through Kansas intending to commit a senseless, barbaric crime.

Last month, I read “In Cold Blood” for only the second time in the past 45 years. I must admit, I had forgotten just how good this book is. Although the crime is now nearly six decades past, it has lost none of its impact because of Truman Capote’s writing. The entire scene – the wheat fields of Kansas, the close-knit small town of Holcomb, the home in which the Clutters lived and died – is brought alive through Capote’s masterful prose. The same is true for the dreary and depraved worlds through which Hickock and Smith traveled as they sought to escape justice.

In recent years, new information has come to light, which has caused some people to question the accuracy and authenticity of “In Cold Blood.” Much of the criticism has to do with Capote’s “fictionalizing” many scenes in the book. It’s important to remember that Capote was always clear in claiming that “In Cold Blood” was a non-fiction novel, in which he used fictional situations to tell a true story.

I have a long and abiding interest in true crime books. That interest was “kick-started” in the spring of my sophomore year in college, when I first read “In Cold Blood.” To this day, it remains the very best true crime book I’ve ever read. Most highly recommended

A Non-fiction masterpiece!

Truman Capote's most famous book "In Cold Blood" is a Non-fiction classic for a good reason. Never had I been so pleased by reading a book of this genre since I read George Orwell's novel about the Spanish Civil War "Homage To Catalonia". This book will accomplish to inmerse you inside the essence of a real crime, with an almost perfect attention to detail, the amazing storytelling of an American masterful writer, and an astonishing characterization that will make you feel like you really met the murderers of the Clutter family.

extraordinary and unforgettable

I came to this book after having recently watched the 1967 film. The film riveted me. I had been wanting to see it for years so I picked up the DVD after Christmas and was very taken with it. Soon after I ordered the book. When I started reading it I just could not stop. The book reads lightning fast. The extraordinary thing I came away with from the book was a feeling of closeness to both the Clutter family and Perry Smith and Dick Hickock. I felt sympathy and sadness for the Clutter family certainly. They seemed by all accounts a wonderful family who befell a horrible last few hours to their tragically short lives. But Capote creates sympathy felt for Perry and Dick even though what they did was horrible and they paid the consequences for their acts. Capote has a fantastic ability to tell the story from many perspectives and in every instance you feel as if you are there. The story has stayed with me and I have gone back and reread sections of the book again. I know this is a book that I will most likely return to for many years to come. After reading the book it stayed with me and I still think upon it. I find myself wishing that Perry and Dick hadn't killed the Clutters, that they end up just leaving without hurting anyone.
I highly recommend the book and I also highly recommend the 1967 film of this book. Richard Brooks (the director) did an amazing job at creating a screen version of this book. Having the movie so fresh in my mind when I was reading the book, I was amazed at the amount of detail from the book that made its way into the movie. It seemed just about every page had something on it that found its way into the movie in some way, shape or form. Also Conrad Hall's black and white cinematography is top notch. A five star move of a five star book. I would say the adaptation was similar to the way Roman Polanski did a top notch job at adapting Rosemary's Baby. Even though the books have more detail, when you're watching them you feel as though you are in the book. A very rare thing. Highly recommended. You won't soon forget this story.

Mary F. Irish is a garden writer, speaker, and consultant in desert horticulture in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was Director of Public Horticulture for the Desert Botanical Garden for eleven years and is the author of Agaves, Yuccas and Related Plants with her husband, Gary Irish.

Desert gardening made easy

Excellent beginner's guide to desert gardening. Not surprising, bias is to low desert where she lives. An expanded version to include intermediate and high desert would be welcome, but the priciples as laid out hold throughout the Southwest. Reads well.

a good narrative

I read this book cover-to-cover, which wasn't what I expected to do; I expected to use it more as a reference. However, it's written so well and contains so much helpful advice that I found it easy to read straight through. I'm new at gardening, but I'm already making good use of the information in my own yard.

The contributors draw on material culture as well as textual and ethnohistoric data to consider such factors as preexistent institutions, structures, and ideologies that are influential in regeneration; economic and political resilience; the role of social mobility, marginal groups, and peripheries; and ethnic change. It's been eighteen years since the anno mirabile of 1988, when Joseph Tainter's Collapse of Complex Societies and George Cowgill's and my edited volume, The Collapse of Ancient States and Civilizations, appeared. These studies have resonated in archaeological theory, since they emphasized that social change was not simply a process of mutually supportive interactions that produced an irreversible succession of levels of holistic integration. They challenged views that human social systems inherently tend to persist or expand and required that levels be broken down into social groupings of partly overlapping and partly opposing fields of action that lend the possibility of instability as well as stability to overarching social institutions. Collapse studies also call attention to what happens after collapse, since collapse seldom connotes the death of a civilization as opposed to the end of a particular form of government. The studies of"regeneration" in this volume explicitly explore issues of what happens beyond collapse.

Of course, what happens beyond collapse depends on what it was that underwent the collapsing, why collapse occurred, and what institutions were left in place after collapse. Although the term collapse usually implies a downward change from something more complex and larger to something else that is less complex and smaller, one might also consider collapse as a movement from a relatively more stable condition to one that is less stable. For example, Steven Falconer and Stephen Savage (1995) have argued that Syria/Palestine in the Middle Bronze Age was a "heartland of villages," and Lisa Cooper in this volume (chapter 2) presents the variations on this theme. Thus, if stability connotes village life, then the appearance of urban sites in the region--which were based, in part, on connections with outsiders and were unstable--could be called a collapse! Of course, such unstable urbanism itself collapsed into the village life from which it sprang. Archaeologists (and others) are not used to talking about the rise of more complexsocial systems as a collapse, and I'm not saying that they should begin to do so. I do wish to point out, however, that trends toward less-complex social organizations need not be thought of as failures of those more-complex organizations, and there is an important example of this principle in one of the chapters in this volume (by Kenny Sims). I also must note that if collapse can be multidirectional, resulting in both more- and less-complex societies, it is simply a species of social change that must be investigated in its appropriate larger temporal and spatial sequences. Logically, then, regeneration--meaning the return to a condition (albeit with significant adjustments) after a collapse--is not necessarily a new category of research or theory, but a more focused attention on a kind of social change.

Comparative studies of social phenomena need to ensure that the comparisons, especially the scale of the social units being compared, are useful. There is no point in comparing the rise, abandonment or partial abandonment, and rise again of particular sites with whole regions or states or civilizations.

The title of "After Collapse" suggests a companion volume to Jared Diamonds "Collapse", a well constructed and fascinating book with both an overview and particular examples of the fatal problems of societies. Alas, After the Collapse is an edited collection of individual essays with no more construction or broad views than a collection of poster displays at a scientific meeting. A few are interesting, but I regret having bought the book.
