Hilarious hodgepodge

Boogie Woogie represents a collection of some of Lewis's best and funniest humor columns of the early 90s. Lewis could take any mundane topic like grits or buying underwear funny and make a funny topic like zits or mooning even more hilarious.

Workbook to Accompany the Second Edition of Donald M. Ayers's English Words from Latin and Greek Elements, by Helena Dettmer, Marcia H. Li

For more than forty years, English Words from Latin and Greek Elements, by Donald M. Ayers, has shown thousands of students the way to a broader vocabulary by teaching them to recognize the classical roots found in many English words. When the second edition of that text appeared in 1986, it was joined by a workbook that has proven exceptionally popular in reinforcing those vocabulary skills. Each lesson in the Workbook complements the text with a variety of exercises: short-answer, matching, multiple choice, word analysis, fill-in-the-blank, and true-false.

The Workbook has now been revised to make it more relevant and useful. It features a new dictionary exercise and word analysis exercises, the replacement of true-false exercises that have caused the most difficulty for students, and the elimination of archaic words and other items that have become dated. The authors have also improved the clarity of the instructions for individual exercises, in some cases adding notes or providing sample answers. As part of the revised front matter, there is a new introduction written just for students to help them get the most out of the workbook. English Words and the Workbook have met with unqualified success in English and Classics courses at both the advanced secondary and college levels. This revision of the Workbook helps to ensure the continuing relevance of the roots approach to vocabulary building for tomorrow’s students.

Good understanding
By Lynn V.
I'm planning to use the text and workbook with my kids in high school. It provides a good understanding of the etymology of English words and how Greek and Latin roots affect the English language. This text is helpful for those seeking to improve both their spelling and vocabulary skills. The text could also help boost SAT and ACT scores while providing a well-rounded education.

Not as useful as I had hopped
By Patrick G. Rabon
I love the actual book, and I use it regularly as a reference when designing lessons for my students. I hoped the workbook would serve as an extra resource. However, the workbook does not provide very useful resources (for me at least). The activities are very basic, and as I worked through them, they did not seem to compliment the lessons in the actual book--felt a bit disjointed. The lack of answer key makes the resource a little difficult to use. Though I don't mind working through to find answers myself (I normally work through materials anyway to better understand what I am teaching), but I'd like an answer key to verify my answers.

The Desert Smells Like Rain: A Naturalist in O'odham Country, by Gary Paul Nabhan

Longtime residents of the Sonoran Desert, the Tohono O'odham people have spent centuries living off the land—a land that most modern citizens of southern Arizona consider totally inhospitable. Ethnobotanist Gary Nabhan has lived with the Tohono O'odham, long known as the Papagos, observing the delicate balance between these people and their environment. Bringing O'odham voices to the page at every turn, he writes elegantly of how they husband scant water supplies, grow crops, and utilize wild edible foods. Woven through his account are coyote tales, O'odham children's impressions of the desert, and observations on the political problems that come with living on both sides of an international border. Whether visiting a sacred cave in the Baboquivari Mountains or attending a saguaro wine-drinking ceremony, Nabhan conveys the everyday life and extraordinary perseverance of these desert people in a book that has become a contemporary classic of environmental literature.

Review
“People often find science boring and ill written. Not in this book. Here the reader is lured into botany, ethnology, hydrology, and a couple of million acres by vivid writing, good pictures, and a beautifully produced book. . . . Anyone ignorant of the desert should begin their cure here.”—Tucson Citizen

“The humor, spice, charm, insight, and compassion with which Gary Paul Nabhan weaves his tale make for enjoyable reading.”—Rio Grande Sun

“Nabhan's point is that we transplanted desert dwellers have a great deal to learn from longtime, environmentally conscious inhabitants if we are not to destroy our fragile home. . . . A remarkably humane essay on nature and respect for it.”—Bloomsbury Review

“The Desert Smells Like Rain offers a remarkable insight, sensitive but unsentimental, combining the sound perceptions of a scientist with ecological concerns, matching humor and a sense of human frailty with tentative hope for the future.”—High Country News

“His eyes are those of a scientist, his prose and vision a poet's: spare, evocative, respectful of both facts and mysteries.”—Orion Nature Quarterly

Insifghtful look at Tohono O'odham
By ernest schusky
Nabhan gives us two perspectives on the O'odham. First, his training as a botanist exposes us to the O'odham use of wild species, both plant and animal. He also introduces us to ecology of the desert by showing how human use of an oasis interacts with its use by birds, providing details on population numbers and species. As a bonus he analyzes how the O'odham diet may relate to their diabetes.
Second, he gives us a brief introduction to O'odham ethnography, and readers will find his description of the O'odham wine drinking (fertility) ceremony interesting although I would have appreciated his setting of the ritual in its larger context i.e. Mexico.
Although the ceremony today is rare, or kept secret, it was common in the 1950s. For a fictional account of one based on numerous ethnographic accounts see, IN SAGUARO'S SHADOW.

The Desert Smells Like Rain
By Frank M. Morales
My wife and I found it interesting how the Tohono O'odham used rainfall alone to successfully subsist in the desert. We were also fascinated with the knowledge and use of herbs to maintain their physical well-being and to ward off disease. We found some of the folk tales amusing. Having lived in the Tucson area, we found we could identify with the book. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The author did an excellent job of capturing the essence of the Tohono O'odham (Papago) culture and lifestyle.

... resident of this area of Arizona I learned a great deal about the Indian culture
By Maryanna Hubbard
Being a winter resident of this area of Arizona I learned a great deal about the Indian culture. Despite the book's having been written in the early 80"s it is relevant today as the impotence of water conservation becomes greater than ever. I sent the book to my grandson, an environmental engineer senior, for the discussion of Indian agriculture was so interesting and informative.

Quite A Revealing Book!!
By A Customer
I wasn't expecting much when I sat down to read this book. I assumed it would be a fairly cut and dried bio of an marginally interesting, blatantly social-climbing first lady. Was I wrong!! There's plenty to read here about Nancy Reagan, her family, the presidency, and more. They don't call Kitty Kelley the Saddam Hussein of journalists for nothing! I enjoyed this book very much, (going on the assumption that all of her sources were being 100% honest of course) and I'd recommend it without reservation.

Vulgar by any other name
By Herbert L Calhoun
Kelly's books, whether you like her or not, can be taken to the bank. You know they are true, no matter how salacious (which means most of them) otherwise she would end up tied into a thousand libel law suits -- and yet she has not.

The same is true for his one. She mines the alley-ways of Washington, and drains the swamps of her close "tell-all" friends and family to come up with the goods on the "made in Hollywood plastic doll" called Nancy Reagan. Too bad Kelly had to become an institution in and of her self. If we had anything other than a "limp-wristed" press, we would not have to rely on the likes of Kelly to give us the "true skinny" on what's happening in the "Lincoln bedroom" and its environs.

This 600-page tale has more than just the ring of truth. Even without hearing her voice, we all knew that Nancy was a flawed personality in the classic way of American flaws; the kind that makes her blend-in and makes her become all but invisible to the typical majority American public. She possessed a kind of "dainty and flighty empty persona" that goes down well with being a "washed-out ex-starlet" and a conservative Republicanism (or is this redundant?).

But inviting Frank Sinatra in through the backdoor of the White House for private lunches when "Old Ronny boy" was away? This gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "when the Cats away, the mouse will come out to play."

And this is just the most salacious of a whole feast of salacious fare. Her firing of Donald Regan, for instance, was a Machiavellian work of art. It proves that Nancy knew how to protect and run interference for her "golden goose." Her consultation and faith in the prediction of psychics bordered on lunacy: Don't these people ever read books? And also, I thought that the Reagan's were religious? How do they pull it off, conning the American people so easily with their facades and "public show faces?"

Nancy's deep insecurities grew out of her troubled childhood and erratic upbringing. However, throughout her life it was all covered-over by a patina of faux style and grace, that got her a long way in our empty culture. There is something mildly vulgar about having leaders as intellectually empty as the Reagans running our country. But Kelly did her job well.

Three stars.

Beyond the Appearances
By karsiyaka
I bought the first edition of this book twenty years ago and I just got around reading it recently. The book was written in a straight forward fashion with no fancy sentences or intellectual content. The language used is plain and descriptive and the book reads like a well-written report. The personality profile of the people in the book and dynamics between them are described so well that the reader is able to understand their motivations in each event.

Initially, the content of the book, meaning the events and the actions of the people involved, shocked and saddened me so much, I wondered if the purpose was selling books by stirring controversy. Actually the documentation at the end of the book and also multiple quotes and reports from different people, most of them high profile, about each event indicate that the author did an extraordinary job of researching her subject matter.

It is amazing how our opinions of others and our feelings toward them are based on superficial measures such as appearances, a smily face or an agreeable nature. This book does a very good job of going beyond the appearances. Although the book is over six hundred pages, I didn't find it boring because it was so hard to put it down.

"In his book, Alan Jones has made a fine contribution to the needs of the church. He has stripped away the obscurity and fearfulness of this important ministry and shown it to be basically good Christian common sense, rooted and grounded in the love of God in Christ, and enabled by the Holy Spirit to be effective. He gives us a wonderful picture of friendship in Christ as we move together through our pilgrimage... Embracing the Exile
By James J.Sheehan
John Fortunato is both an experienced psychotherapist and a well-informed, deeply faithful Christian who has learned, through time and pain, the inviolable and unconditional love of the God who created him as a gay man and whose acceptance of him as such is total.
Blessedly free of technical, therapeutic jargon, Fortunato outlines his understanding of the process of psychotherapy as "grieving" and of the special need for gay men and lesbians to grieve the losses which started to accumulate even before the start of personal, individual memory. Movingly, he shares his own experiences as a gay man struggling to find a sense of spirituality in his life, and the many cul-de-sacs he encountered which left him angry, frustrated and feeling abandoned and damaged by Churches ( he was born Roman Catholic and is now, happily, a part of the Episcopal Church) where he sought healing and acceptance. Beautifully written and deeply felt, this is required reading for any gay person who has felt that there is no place for him/her at the table of the Lord. Fortunato has come to believe, as the title suggests, that it is only in "embracing" life in exile from the rest of the culture that we can find ourselves and the peace we seek. In doing this, we find not only the love of God, but companions for the journey, all of whom are also "In exile" and headed home to the heart of the love which created them and accepts them exactly as they are.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-This authoritative revision on a perennially popular subject is an ambitious, and on all counts successful examination of the culture of ancient Egypt. More than 2000 alphabetically arranged, accessible entries varying in length from a paragraph to several pages accurately discuss topics such as daily life, dynasties and rulers, religion, gods and goddesses, mortuary rituals, dress, language, geography, foods, art, and architecture, etc. The scope of the earlier edition (Facts On File, 1991) has been broadened with coverage of the periods before the unification of Egypt (circa 3000 B.C.E.) and those following the fall of the New Kingdom (in 1070 B.C.E.). There is also material on the discoveries of the sunken cities of Canopus, Heraklion, and Menouthis, and the results of the DNA studies of mummies. In addition, significant documentation of changes on the political, religious, and social landscape of ancient Egypt is provided. Many of the articles are appended with useful see and see-also references and "Suggested Readings." This volume also boasts detailed and precise lists of the names and dates of the kings and queens, deities, and temple sites, and a brief, but user-friendly chronology of Egypt and neighboring cultures. Eighty black-and-white photos with informative captions and readable maps amplify and expand the narrative. Libraries will want to purchase this resource for students, ancient civilization enthusiasts, and general readers.

From Booklist
The first, 1991 edition of this work had more than 1,500 entries and covered the predynastic period from around 3200 B.C.E. to the fall of the New Kingdom in 1070 B.C.E. The revised edition has more than 2,200 alphabetically arranged entries and extends coverage to the suicide of Cleopatra and the beginning of Roman occupation in 30 B.C.E. After a brief introduction there is a chronology of major events in Egypt and the Near East and Mediterranean in parallel columns. After the body of the work are a glossary of Egyptian words, a list of suggested readings, and a detailed index. The addition of the latter remedies a deficiency noted in our review of the first edition.

Articles range from a paragraph to several double-column pages. Many of the longer ones, and a few of the shorter ones, have suggestions for further reading. Cross-references and see also references are used liberally. There is a table of deities in the entry Gods and goddesses, and of queens in Queens, but a list of kings appears not under Pharaoh but in Dynasties, with no cross-reference. Most of the rulers of Egypt have separate entries, but a table of rulers under Pharaoh would have been useful for placing them in time.

The text is accompanied by some 14 black-and-white maps and diagrams of Egypt and major temple complexes. The 80 black-and-white photographs and line drawings should photocopy well. The suggested readings include materials published in 2001, and at least some of the readings should be available in most medium-sized to large pubic libraries.

This title is recommended for high-school and public libraries and for smaller academic libraries needing a quick and current Egyptology reference. Less scholarly than The Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt (2001), it is a good single-volume introduction to the topic. RBB

From the Inside Flap
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ANCIENT EGYPT is the first single-volume reference guide to the remarkable culture that flourished on the banks of the Nile from the predynastic period, 3200 B.C., to the fall of the New Kingdom in 1070 B.C.
Illustrated with more than 175 line drawings, maps, and time charts, over 1,500 entries span all the gods, rulers, cities, and themes important in ancient Egypt, including:
-Art and Architecture
-Pyramids
-The Sphinx
-The Military
In addition, several extensive essays on such key topics as astronomy, mortuary rituals, agriculture, further illuminate this fascinating period of civilization.

this book is worth 10 stars. there is so much info. this book has everything in it, including all the pharaoh's from ramesses the great to den. this book talks about the the queen's of egypt from Nefertiti to a'at. the every day things, different cities, religious in egypt, including gods, their spiritual ideals, are all in this book. If you have ever wondered about the armarna, period how many wives ramesses the great had, what egyptian men and women dress was, how dwarf's were looked upon, or what egyptians used for pillows this is the book for you. it's the best book i'v bought and i'm sure that you will love it as much as me.

Not up to academic standards but ok for a basic reference
By TammyJo Eckhart
There is no bibliography or footnotes or any citations at all in this book and that is always a bad sign. Sure the pictures are cool to look at, there are ok timelines and tables, and just having an alphabetical source of Egyptian terms is wonderful. But this should not be somone's primary source for Egyptian information especially if you are doing anything academically like writing a school paper or giving a talk on Egypt. I'll tell you this for certain, it is not worth [the money]...

Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt
By K. Murphy
I am not the biggest fan of ancient Egypt, preferring their Assyrian and Hittite neighbors, but this book is very useful for anyone with an interest in the pre-Classical world. It appears to be well-researched (even if not up to academic level, as the other reviewers made plain) and is very thorough in its coverage of the life and times of the Egyptians. Included are short bios of all the pharaohs and many of the queens of Egypt, as well as a number of princesses, officials, and religious figures.

This title would be of particular usefulness to someone studying Egyptian religion; its coverage of the gods, religious practices, festivals, and locations of Egypt is pretty deep.

Included also are lots of black-and-white illustrations, most based on Egyptian artwork.

Overall, the Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt is a singular excellent source for someone with a particular interest in the times and its major personalities.

Contested Ground: Comparative Frontiers on the Northern and Southern Edges of the Spanish Empire (Southwest Center Series)From Brand: Un

The Spanish empire in the Americas spanned two continents and a vast diversity of peoples and landscapes. Yet intriguing parallels characterized conquest, colonization, and indigenous resistance along its northern and southern frontiers, from the role played by Jesuit missions in the subjugation of native peoples to the emergence of livestock industries, with their attendant cowboys and gauchos and threats of Indian raids. In this book, nine historians, three anthropologists, and one sociologist compare and contrast these fringes of New Spain between 1500 and 1880, showing that in each region the frontier represented contested ground where different cultures and polities clashed in ways heretofore little understood. The contributors reveal similarities in Indian-white relations, military policy, economic development, and social structure; and they show differences in instances such as the emergence of a major urban center in the south and the activities of rival powers. The authors also show how ecological and historical differences between the northern and southern frontiers produced intellectual differences as well. In North America, the frontier came to be viewed as a land of opportunity and a crucible of democracy; in the south, it was considered a spawning ground of barbarism and despotism. By exploring issues of ethnicity and gender as well as the different facets of indigenous resistance, both violent and nonviolent, these essays point up both the vitality and the volatility of the frontier as a place where power was constantly being contested and negotiated.

Review
"An anthology that gives readers a whole that is much greater than the sum of its uniformly excellent parts. Taken together, these essays not only present a carefully nuanced overview of the similarities and contrasts between these outer reaches of the Spanish empire but they also suggest stimulating new avenues of empirical research and theoretical inquiry." —New Mexico Historical Review"Fascinating essays . . . a healthy counterpoint to the Turnerian frontier thesis." —Western Historical Quarterly"A model of comparative history which will do much to advance the new teaching and research field of Latin American frontiers and borderlands." —The Americas"Specialists in either 'frontier' will learn much about the other from these excellent comparative histories." —Pacific Historical Review

Major contribution to Latin American & frontier studies.
By A Customer
This book should become a major contribution to Latin American studies, because it provides fresh perspectives on topics we'd thought we already knew well. It does so by relating Latin America to vital issues in history, notably recent research on frontier history, "the new Western history," & themes of race, class & gender. The chapter by Susan Socolow, discussing Argentine frontier women & thus engendering the history of the gauchos, is particularly strong, but so are most of the others. One drawback is that coverage is largely limited to the far margins of Spanish America (northern Mexico & Rio de la Plata regions), when there is plenty of work to do on the frontiers of core areas of Spain's New World empire, e.g. Peru & Bolivia. (There is some fine material on Brazil, but the book's main emphasis is on Spanish America.) Nevertheless, this work definitely advances understanding of important aspects of Latin American history.

A Classic Brothers Grimm Style Faerie Tale
By Wendy C. Allen
I highly recomend this book to all who love the classic, frightening, and yes often grousome faerie tales written by the Brothers Grimm. It is rare to find such wonderful story-telling talent in today's world of political correctness. "Tailypo" rings true to the style of both Grimm and Aesop, reminding children that there can sometimes be terrible consiquensies when you do terrible things to those around you. After reading this book I also recomend that you read "The Juniper Tree" and also "The Boy Who Left Home To Find Out About The Creeps" both of which are by the Brothers Grimm . Another great tale written in this wounderful style is a classic folk-tale called "Wait Until Emmete Comes" ,unfortunately I do not know the auther of this tale.I highly recomend that you read each of these books, especily "Tailypo"; for it's moral is as true today as ever,as the Bible says :"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Children should read "Tailypo" every night to remind them that if you do something bad to someone, bad things will happen to you.

Inappropriately Frightening for Young Children
By A Customer
After a teacher read this story to my First Grader's class, he was so terrified and haunted that he broke out sobbing at the dinner table. For days afterwards, he would become panicked whenever he recalled the story and had difficulty sleeping.
My husband and I read the book from the library, to try to see what had scared our son so badly. I can't say that my normally stalwart 6 and a half year old was overreacting. In the story, a creature haunts a man who lives alone in the cabin in the woods. Every night, the creature whispers a menacing rhyme to the man. Despite the man's precautions to keep the creature out, the creature leads away and kills the man's dogs. At the end of the story, the creature utters the most threatening rhyme, and the story declares that the man is never seen or heard from again.
You know your child, and I expect that some children DO like to be scared, but if your child is at all susceptible to nightmares or fantasy, do him or her a favor and AVOID THIS BOOK!

Fantastic Classic
By A. Colon
My sister used to read this book to me frequently since before I could remember. It is one of my fondest early memories snuggling up to her while she used the best sound effects and spookiest voice: "Tailypo, tailypo, give me back my tailypo...." Definitely the coolest children's spooky story. It's all in how you present it to your child - that it is make believe, and there is not really a creature out there that could do this. Truthfully, in the real world, humans are much scarier than this creature was. At least he gave the guy a heads up that he was coming after him, which is more than we get from fellow humans when they decide to attack!

From Gossip Girl to The Kite Runner a completely updated look at the history of censorship in world literature.

Praise for the previous editions:
"A must-have for all of us who enjoy the right to choose what we read." Nadine Strossen, President, American Civil Liberties Union

Throughout history, nations, peoples, and governments have censored writers and their works on political, religious, sexual, and social grounds. Although the literary merit of the majority of these books has been proven time and time again, censorship efforts are still in place today. From Animal Farm to The Grapes of Wrath, The Koran to The Talmud, Ulysses to the Harry Potter series, The Canterbury Tales to The Bell Jar, this revised edition examines the many struggles these books faced in order to be read.

Tracing the censorship histories of 120 works from across the world, 120 Banned Books, Second Edition provides a summary of each work, its censorship history, and suggestions for further reading. Many new titles have been added to reflect some of the controversies in recent years, and updates have been made to existing entries on such classic books as Huckleberry Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird.

New entries include:

-The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie (banned on social grounds)
-The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown (banned on religious grounds)
-Girls of Riyadh by Rajaa Alsanea (banned on political grounds)
-Gossip Girl series by Cecily von Ziegesar (banned on sexual grounds)
-His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman (banned on religious grounds)
-The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (banned on social grounds)
-and many more.

A list of books banned over the years
By Michael Bond
In "120 Banned Books" the authors pull together a collection of books that have been banned at some point in history for Political, Religious, Sexual, and/or Social grounds.

I found this book very interesting in two ways. First, it offers a nice synopsis of 120 books, a few of which are somewhat obscure. And as it is unlikely that many have read all of these, this book provides enough information, along with Amazon reviews, of course ;), about the subject books for the reader to make the decision about investing the time to read it.

Following each book synopsis is a short history of when, where, why, etc that book was banned. I will admit that, after a few dozen times, I got tired of which local school board voted to remove a book from a reading list or library shelf. The local school board bannings are generally motivated by someone in the community finding a book offensive or insulting or age-inappropriate. And with the political correctness/hypersensitivity of today, I am only suprised that we do not see a vastly increasing number of complaints for various left- and right- of center reasons.

But I DID find the discussions of book bans at the national level quite interesting. The read can see how some governments through history have attempted control the thoughts of the citizens by controlling the printed material (and other media as well, of course) available. This book includes examples from all over the world and is very interesting.

This is a good book to add to your library.

Banning books is futile. This books shows why.
By John V. Karavitis
Came across this book at a university library. Given the title and subject matter, had to read it. All in all, a good read. Books that have been banned across the world are divided into four categories or "grounds" for banning: political, religious, sexual, social. I was surprised to see quite a number of books on this list that were from my high school English classes.

If anything, this 540-page tome can tend to get a bit tiresome when it comes to details regarding censorship activities. Certain books are singled out by one parent, which leads to a cascade of committee reviews by district school boards, and frequently involving lawsuits. As one person noted in this book, attempts at banning books frequently lead to failure. And besides, if children really want to get their hands on a particular book, in this day and age, they readily can.

Perhaps the most surprising thing was how, even in the 21st century, there are still attempts to ban books in America.

FYI, the full text of this book is currently available on the Internet.
