Assessments of Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath 50 Years After Publication

There are as many shades of opinion about Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath as there are literary critics. This is a broad overview of critical reactions into the 1980s, including essays by Peter Lisca and Warren French, two of the leading, early Steinbeck scholars. The opening essay, an extensive, superficial summary of critics and their main views of The Grapes of Wrath, can be off-putting. But if you stay with it, you encounter some interesting Steinbeck information you might see nowhere else. This includes the September 1939 reaction to the novel in England, where it was published just days after the start of war. Something I've seen nowhere else.

When you read this book you are pulled into the dust bowl. You feel as though you are there. It paints a picture and you are in it.
