Good for specialists

This book is an evaluation and discussion of problems related to the available sources for the first voyage of Christopher Columbus to the Americas. It is probably of interest to specialists who would like to understand Mr. Henige's views on the subject.
The author does not discuss the voyage itself, except to add his own opinion regarding where Columbus first landed in the Americas. The author refers to details regarding Columbus himself and the voyages, so the reader will find it helpful to be familiar with a standard biography of Columbus.
The problem the author addresses is that the available sources for the voyage are all suspect.
The primary source material that might be available is the journal Columbus prepared during and after the voyage, as transcribed at the Spanish court. Henige points out that Columbus was aware that the location of his landing belonged by treaty to Portugal, not Spain. It seems likely that the journal would have been written to cover up this fact. The journal does not survive.
The closest materials that survive are notes by Las Casas, and a book by a son of Columbus. The notes by Las Casas were apparently made for his own use from a copy of the journal. The notes are handwritten, with corrections, marginal notes, and notes written between the lines. These notes probably contain a mixture of verbatim quotes and summaries. The book by a son of Columbus is less thorough, and survives only in an Italian translation.
Derivative works have since been published, based on the surviving secondary sources. Publishing technology until recently could not reproduce images of the notes of Las Casas at reasonable cost, so the derivative works that use the notes of Las Casas convert the notes into linear text, making assumptions about how the marginal notes and text between lines should be inserted.
In Search of Columbus: The Sources for the First Voyage, is a discussion of the problems of the sources: the quality of the surviving secondary sources, the quality and editorial decisions made by authors of derivative works, and translation of obsolete Spanish navigational terms.
This book is of interest to specialists. The book may be outdated, because if images of the notes of Las Casas are easily available, the derivative works are no longer as important as they were previously.
