Shameful Victory: The Los Angeles Dodgers, the Red Scare, and the Hidden History of Chavez Ravine, by John H. M. Laslett

On May 8, 1959, the evening news shocked Los Angeles residents, who saw LA County sheriffs carrying a Mexican American woman from her home in Chavez Ravine not far from downtown. Immediately afterward, the house was bulldozed to the ground. This violent act was the last step in the forced eviction of 3,500 families from the unique hilltop barrio that in 1962 became the home of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

John H. M. Laslett offers a new interpretation of the Chavez Ravine tragedy, paying special attention to the early history of the barrio, the reform of Los Angeles's destructive urban renewal policies, and the influence of the evictions on the collective memory of the Mexican American community.

In addition to examining the political decisions made by power brokers at city hall, Shameful Victory argues that the tragedy exerted a much greater influence on the history of the Los Angeles civil rights movement than has hitherto been appreciated. The author also sheds fresh light on how the community grew, on the experience of individual home owners who were evicted from the barrio, and on the influence that the event had on the development of recent Chicano/a popular music, drama, and literature.

Arturo Rosales, author of Chicano!: The History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement

“Chavez Ravine is a Goliath versus David story with many unresolved questions. With the aid of first rate scholarship, Professor John Laslett provides better answers than anyone.”—Juan Gomez-Quinones, co-author of Making Aztlán: Ideology and Culture of the Chicana and Chicano Movement, 1966–1977

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up Updated statistics, new tables and illustrations, and entries on Rape Kits and Evidence Collection update this second edition. The introduction includes a section on how to use the book as well as a brief discussion of Society and the Victims of Rape. The entries, which are generally a few pages in length, are clear and concise. They answer basic questions that students will have through definitions, statistics, an examination of common myths associated with the subject, and a Q & A. Fact or Fiction? sections clarify some misconceptions (It is okay for my teacher to flirt with me and Unless a weapon is used it isn't really rape), while Teens Speak relates personal experiences or responses to information. Further-reading suggestions conclude most entries. New as separate entries are Rape and Society and Statutory Rape, which were covered in less detail in the earlier edition. The statistics are sourced: most date post-2000 with many from 2006 and later. One interesting example is the chart illustrating unreported rapes that number has changed significantly since the 2005 edition. The additional resources section listing hotlines and help sites is largely untouched. If you already own the first edition and can find the statistics online (most of them come from government sources), you may want to wait for another title. If you need a serviceable volume on this subject, this one may fit the bill. Robin Henry, Wakeland High School, Frisco, TX

In a Village Far from Home: My Years among the Cora Indians of the Sierra Madre, by Catherine Palmer Finerty

What do most career women do after a successful run on Madison Avenue? Catherine Finerty watched her friends settle into the country-club life. She opted instead for Mexico.

When the 60-year-old widow loaded up her car and headed south, what she found at the end of the road was far from what she expected. Finerty settled into a comfortable house just outside of Guadalajara and, although not a Catholic, she soon immersed herself in Franciscan volunteer work. It wasn't long before she found herself visiting small settlements hidden in the tropical mountains of western Mexico, and it was in Jesús María—so isolated that one could only get there by mule or small plane—that she found her new calling: the village nurse.

With its bugs and heat, no phones or running water, the tiny town was hardly a place to enjoy one's retirement years, but Finerty was quickly charmed by the community of Cora Indians and mestizos. Armed with modest supplies, a couple of textbooks, and common sense, she found herself delivering first aid, advising on public health, and administering injections. And in a place where people still believed in the power of shamans, providing health care sometimes required giving in to the magical belief that a hypodermic needle could cure anything.

Finerty's account of her eight years in Jesús María is both a compelling story of nursing under adverse conditions and a loving portrait of a people and their ways. She shares the joys and sorrows of this isolated world: religious festivals and rites of passage; the tragedy of illness and death in a place where people still rely on one another as much as medicine; a flash flood that causes such havoc that even less-than-pious village men attend Mass daily. And she introduces a cast of characters not unlike those in a novel: Padre Domingo and his airborne medical practice; the local bishop, who frowns on Finerty's slacks; Chela, a mestiza from whom she rents her modest two-room house (complete with scorpions); and the young Cora Indian woman Chuy, from whom she gains insight into her new neighbors.

Blending memoir and travel writing, In a Village Far from Home takes readers deep into the Sierra Madre to reveal its true treasure: the soul of a people.

From Booklist
The name of the village is Jesus Maria. It was so isolated in the eight years Finerty spent time there that only a small plane--or a mule--could get you there. She insists that "It's not a story," but she's wrong. It's quite a story, that of a sixtysomething, retired magazine executive who finds a place where she can be both useful and appreciated. The church is at the middle of Jesus Maria: the mestizos (Mexican with some Indian blood) live upriver, and the Cora Indians downriver. What happens when the rains don't stop and the death of Piedad, a badly burned little girl, provide some of the stories, but the deeper story is how Finerty learns to be nurse and doctor for people who had neither, working with a young Franciscan priest and an old male nurse. Heat and bugs and no electricity or running water are soon brushed impatiently aside: what Finerty did and what she learned in late middle age is simply mesmerizing and, sometimes, both touching and funny. Brava. GraceAnne DeCandido

interesting
By David F. Coppin
The book was enthusiastically recommended by a friend who has lived there and knows the author. It did, indeed, give a very nice insight into conditions there, but did not generate in me the same excitement that my friend (who has lived there) has as it records something very dear to her. It is interesting and worth the read, but I read it more from a sense of obligation than true interest.

An inspiration
By Amazon customer
What started out as a "self-appointed tour of the Franciscan missions" in western Mexico, turned into a stay of 8 years in the small, isolated town of Jesus Maria. The author, a woman of 63 years, found herself placed in the position of administering health care to the Cora Indians and mountain Mexicans who lived in the area - despite the fact that she had no prior medical experience.

Adapting to life in the small community, in the early 1970's, was life changing. Having once lived in New York and worked on Madison Avenue, she was now living in a tiny house, with little more than the basics: towels, sheets, a net over the ceiling to catch scorpions, a kerosene store, and pots and pans. She learned to live on beans, tortillas and coffee, with the occasional fruit, egg or piece of meat.

Much of her story centers around her getting accustomed to her surroundings and the people she dealt with. Also, there is a lot of information on the religious holidays and festivals of the area. But her story telling is at it's best when she opens up her heart to the reader, as she does in the story of the little girl with burns. An inspiring story of how one person can make a difference, even after retirement.

Rudo Ensayo: A Description of Sonora and Arizona in 1764, by Juan Nentvig

Just as the Rudo Ensayo is more an historic document than a mere history, so this new translation of it is more a documented interpretation than simply a new translation. The translator/editors bring their expert knowledge of the area, the language, and the history to every page of Nentvig's manuscript. Pradeau and Rasmussen have clarified many of the ambiguities of earlier translations by Smith (1863) and Guiteras (1894), and have added substantial annotations to the author's accounts of fauna and flora, native culture, and Spanish outposts. An incomparable record of a twelve-year mission in 18th century Sonora, the Rudo Ensayo as rendered in modern English is also a fascinating travelogue through an untamed land.

About the Author
Dr. Alberto Pradeau's interest in the territory ceded to the United States by the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo February 2, 1848, began in 1908 with the reading of Samuel Woodworth Cozzens' book The Ancient Cibola: The Marvellous Country. Since 1940 this interest has been a relentlessly pursued hobby, and the present version of Rudo Ensayo is the result of personal knowledge, firsthand experience, and extensive research. Dr. Pradeau is a dental surgeon born in Sonora, Mexico, where he received his early education, and is a graduate of the University of Southern California.

Robert R. Rasmussen earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from California State University at Los Angeles in English literature. Having read the life of Father Eusebio Kino and become interested in the Catholic experience in New Spain during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, he worked very closely with Dr. Pradeau for several years in the preparation of this volume.

Exploring Mars: Chronicles from a Decade of Discovery, by Scott Hubbard

The Red Planet has been a subject of fascination for humanity for thousands of years, becoming part of our folklore and popular culture. The most Earthlike of the planets in our solar system, Mars may have harbored some form of life in the past and may still possess an ecosystem in some underground refuge. The mysteries of this fourth planet from our Sun make it of central importance to NASA and its science goals for the twenty-first century.

In the wake of the very public failures of the Mars Polar Lander and the Mars Climate Orbiter in 1999, NASA embarked on a complete reassessment of the Mars Program. Scott Hubbard was asked to lead this restructuring in 2000, becoming known as the "Mars Czar." His team's efforts resulted in a very successful decade-long series of missions—each building on the accomplishments of those before it—that adhered to the science adage "follow the water" when debating how to proceed. Hubbard's work created the Mars Odyssey mission, the twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Phoenix mission, and most recently the planned launch of the Mars Science Laboratory.

Now for the first time Scott Hubbard tells the complete story of how he fashioned this program, describing both the technical and political forces involved and bringing to life the national and international cast of characters engaged in this monumental endeavor.  Blending the exciting stories of the missions with the thrills of scientific discovery, Exploring Mars will intrigue anyone interested in the science, the engineering, or the policy of investigating other worlds.

Review

"It's high time somebody revealed the underbelly of why and how we travel to the Red Planet. Leave it to NASA's 'Mars Czar' Scott Hubbard to tell this story. Yes, we're all explorers, but every mission to space is enabled by financial, political, and cultural forces that you never hear about—without which there'd be no enterprise of discovery at all."—Neil deGrasse Tyson

"Mars is not a friendly place—and neither is Washington. Scott Hubbard knows how to navigate deftly in both places—and the end result is a Mars exploration campaign that emerged like a Phoenix from a pair of smoking holes in the rusty red soil. His story is filled with outsized egos, undersized budgets, and nail-biting tension as he performs mission impossible: turning an epic failure into a space-age triumph."—Miles O'Brien

"Space-exploration and Mars enthusiasts will find much here to whet their appetites."—Booklist

"Hubbard's strong suit is his yearning for good science at the service of education and public outreach. He outlines the program's balance as regards orbital and land-based exploration, the systems-engineering approach, the expected high level of return, the budgetary consideration and the program's probes into ancient Mars and current Mars. The author closes with an impressive list of the program's successes over the last decade. A lucid, concentrated appreciation of the technological, political and scientific imperatives that guide the nation's approach to Mars."—Kirkus Reviews

"Exploring Mars is Hubbard's absorbing story of how he [helped NASA], starting by creating teams of talented scientists and engineers inside a headquarters building that is, as he writes, 'a combination of alphabet soup and numerology' that was rife with internal politics and power trips."—The San Francisco Chronicle

exploring bureaucracy
By jdliv
You won't learn much about Mars from reading this book - or much about the exploration of Mars, although the last chapter does quickly review some of the highlights of Mars missions of the past decade, while Hubbard was "Mars Czar." Most of the book is a fairly tedious review of Hubbard's activities navigating the bureaucracy of NASA and Congress, including endless meetings and negotiations. That said, Mars missions have been quite successful under Hubbard's leadership, so those interested in the details of how things get done in Washington might find the book of interest.

Belongs on every space bookshelf
By Mary Ann Liebert
Scott Hubbard has written a very comprehensive and readable book that chronicles over a decade of discovery. Whether you have always been interested in NASA's space program or are a newbie who is enthralled with the Mars Science Laboratory and its phenomenal Rovers, you will find something fascinating in every chapter. The launch and landing of the Mars Rovers always makes headlines, but the back story is as interesting, if not more so.
Scott Hubbard was asked to restructure NASA's Mars Program in 2000 after some very public and costly failures. His responsibilities encompassed both the technical program and navigating the political waters in Washington, DC. Budget considerations are always front and center, and at the same time the technical and engineering decisions must be those that ensure the missions success. Hubbard who had served as director of NASA's Ames Research Center, and set up NASA's Astrobiology Institute, became known as the Mars Czar, and the expectations of turning the Mars project from failure to success were huge.
From it's earliest days, sample return from The Red Planet was a goal, but enormous effort was first needed to determine the best sites for a sampling return mission. Earth and Mars must be in the right alignment for a launch approximately every 26 months, so if things go wrong with a mission, a two year wait for the next one is hard for Washington to live with, especially given NASA's budget, which has been constantly diminished, while at the same time, the work that goes into science, engineering, rocketry, computer programs, communication equipment, robotics, and remote operations cannot be less than absolute! Orbiters, which get little media coverage must be able to perform flawlessly as well.
Hubbard's responsibilities encompassed the world of national and international space policies and endeavors, and he chronicles international trips to ensure the vital cooperation with the European Space Agency and others in Russia and Japan among others.
Professor Hubbard's book brings together a history of NASA's Mars program, its many accomplishments that led up to the most recent launch of the rover, Curiosity, and he projects the goals and timelines for future exploration to help us answer the question, "Are we Alone?". An extraordinary book, with a timeline of the New Mars Probgram that Hubbard oversaw, figures and photos, some color illustrations, and a formidable list of abbreviations.
Although I was initially disappointed that a Kindle edition is not yet available, I am very happy to have the hardcover edition as I will best be able to show and discuss it with others who have an interest in Mars.

Not just Mars - The Dawning of a New Space Era
By Josh Rosen
Hubbard's book really picks apart a moment in history that almost snuck by without most of us noticing: That moment when American space exploration efforts were snatched from the jaws of defeat with no time to spare. For many of us who grew up gazing at the stars and dreaming of a space-faring future, the seeming self-destruction of NASA - and especially the pair of Mars mission disasters in the late 90s - looked like the end. But thanks to people like Scott Hubbard, the end didn't come.

This book - which is a fantastic read for anyone interested in Mars or space exploration in general - tells the step-by-step story of a brilliant (and almost blindly optimistic) scientist who stepped up to rescue NASA's Mars program, and maybe even NASA as a whole. Virtually everyone on Earth watched as the twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity sent back amazing pictures and data from a mission that succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams. And the entire world held it's breath as the Curiosity rover set down in August of 2012 in a terrifying and picture-perfect landing. These are some of the missions that are the fruit of Scott Hubbard's labor as NASA's "Mars Czar." And these are the missions that have recaptured humanity's interest in Mars and in space exploration as a whole.

"Exploring Mars" pulls back the curtain on NASA's process. It shows how one articulate and persistent person can build consensus, change cultural behaviors and make huge things happen. Important things. And these things - traveling to and landing on another planet - are about as difficult as it gets.

About the Author
Patricia Wentworth (1878–1961) was one of the masters of classic English mystery writing. Born in India as Dora Amy Elles, she began writing after the death of her first husband, publishing her first novel in 1910. In the 1920s, she introduced the character who would make her famous: Miss Maud Silver, the former governess whose stout figure, fondness for Tennyson, and passion for knitting served to disguise a keen intellect. Along with Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, Miss Silver is the definitive embodiment of the English style of cozy mysteries.

Different crime, same framework
By Paper or Kindle
In the 28th Miss Silver mystery (of 32), the only noticeable difference is the original crime. I am reading the books in order, except for the second, and poison pen letters haven't featured in any of them. The bare bones of this novel, as in all of them, is a country house in a small town, lots of people with secrets, at least one young couple with their happy-ever-after requiring some work, and Miss Maud Silver, a retired governess who hasn't aged since 1928 when the series began (this book was written in 1955). A lot of the plot devices have been recycled, though the author does her best to give them differences. A frail child, a second marriage, an unwilling bride-to-be, various people living off the largesse of an heir or heiress, a deranged villain, gossiping villagers and household help, a disappearance and sudden reappearance...all of these have featured in any number of other books in the series. The writing style is cozy mid-century, clean enough for readers of any age, completely lacking in technology, and defaulting to old-fashioned virtues. By now, I'm able to tell who the villain is from the beginning, but it doesn't spoil my enjoyment of the tales. This isn't the best of the series, but it isn't bad. The author was winding down her career at this point. There are only four more books in the series, which ended in the year of her death, 1961. If you've never read a Miss Silver mystery, I'd recommend "Vanishing Point" as a starting point.

Anonymous letters lead to suicide - or is it murder?
By Michele L. Worley
Maud Silver is in this case from the beginning, rather than coming aboard after consultation with a client. Frank Abbott, one of her Scotland Yard admirers, has just returned from a holiday in Ledshire - and thanks to his legion of cousins scattered about the country, he *never* stays in a hotel. In the little town of Tilling Green, he stayed with a *very* distant widowed cousin, Joyce Rodney. Joyce's son David is a 'delicate' little boy, so rather than taking a regular job, she signed on as an underpaid live-in help to the Wayne sisters. Irene Wayne, the surviving sister, is a twittery spinster; it's never explained how Miss Renie survived the visit of a Man.

The ever-cynical Frank, whose formidable defences include an irreverent sense of humor, is worried about Joyce; she's been receiving anonymous letters - poison-pen letters. "She is one of those pleasant girls - nice to look at without being a beauty, intelligent without being a brain. In fact there are no extremes - nothing to rouse up the sort of enmity which the letters suggest."

His professional description of Tilling Green for 'Maudie' focuses on the Manor. Colonel Roger Repton inherited the land but not the money. His great folly was in marrying the decorative Scilla - it's generally thought that she didn't realize that his ward Valentine, not Roger himself, has the money, which he'll lose when Valentine marries. Joyce says that Valentine's heart isn't in marrying Gilbert Earle; she loved the vicar's nephew, but Jason went off into the blue without a word. Repton's spinster sister runs the Manor, since Scilla won't lift a finger.

Frank's armor cracks, however, when news of an inquest at Tilling Green hits the papers; he'd met Doris Pell in the Wayne house, and rather liked the young dressmaker. The inquest brings in a verdict of suicide after receiving a poison pen letter, although the allegations of immorality appear to have been false (and were too vague for an all-is-discovered suicide anyhow). Maud takes the case, worming her way into the Wayne household as a paying guest so as not to telegraph her true profession to her quarry. (Abbott doesn't receive further play in this story, save at its conclusion; since it's a Ledshire case, Maud's favorite former pupil, Chief Constable Randall March, is involved.)

Superficially, this case has several similarities with THE WATERSPLASH, but they fall into perspective on closer examination. The first death in each case involves someone drowned in very shallow water - but the 2nd and 3rd deaths in THE WATERSPLASH are also drownings, while those in this book are due to poison, and here the possibility of suicide in each death is taken more seriously than in THE WATERSPLASH. In both stories, the male love interest left town with no explanation a few years ago, only to return abruptly just lately without public explanation but privately with sterling reasons (but in THE WATERSPLASH the girl was too young to be taken seriously, whereas here they'd had an understanding since childhood). However, in THE WATERSPLASH, the male love interest is a suspect, while here neither is. Finally, in both cases, Maud Silver has a climactic confrontation with the murderer, who tries to kill her, but with a somewhat different spin in each case.

Despite the star-crossed lovers who appear in most Silver mysteries, whose problems are usually resolved by Maud Silver's hard work, Wentworth actually represents a rather fuller range of relationships than she may be given credit for. Maud's niece Gladys, of course, is a perennial trial to the family, who sympathize greatly with her long-suffering husband but hope devoutly that he won't dump her back on *them*. Roger Repton's disastrous marriage has a superficial relationship to that of the Harrisons in THE GAZEBO, but Repton's personality is *much* more forceful than Jack Harrison's - he's all for throwing Scilla out of the house on the spot when he finds out about her adultery. At the other end of the social scale, the father of the Stokes family is a househusband; he uses his health as a socially respectable excuse for staying home and indulging his excellent cooking skills for his large, cheerful family. The mysterious Mr. Barton - the woman-hating recluse with 7 cats - has a *very* unusual background when you get to know him.

Published 13 years after Christie's THE MOVING FINGER, Marple's only similar case, this is a stronger book - Wentworth's characterization is far better than that of most of her more celebrated contemporaries. However, it fails to engage the reader as much as usual, since no one party is ever the focus of Maud's interest. Joyce Rodney and her son are under-utilized. Neither Valentine nor Jason is ever threatened with arrest.

All in all, enjoyable and worth reading, but not memorable.

Old fashioned cozy mystery.
By likesagoodmystery
The town has had a spate of anonymous nasty letters accusing people of untrue things or bringing their attention to others' wrong-doings. In addition, by the time the novel is over several people have died or were they murdered? Miss Silver is a older single woman who has a detective practice after being a school teacher for years. She is able to insinuate herself into the town as a paying guest at another woman's cottage. She helps her friend and previous student Frank Abbott of the Yard. She has excellent judgment regarding people and their motives. Readers can compare her to Miss Marple and be correct. There are differences, however. I enjoyed the descriptions of people and the town from the past and the slow pace of everyone's lives. There are several suspects and a romance and very British class divisions from the 1st half of the 20th century. It is a steady paced book and worth a couple afternoon's time. If you want gore and active mayhem, however, this is not for you.

Decades of research yield polished, easy to read overview
By Stan Gotlieb
Long-time Mex-o-phile Lynn Foster lives in Oaxaca for a good portion of the year, and has written several books about Mexico, ranging from the "Fielding Guide to Mexico" to a "Handbook on Life in the Ancient Maya World". An academic by trade, and an explorer by interest, Foster brings a lifetime of meticulous research as well as a sense of "life on the ground" to this revised edition.

The result is a well-researched popularized view of what could easily be tens of volumes of dry material, distilled into one volume of highly accessible text. This book is fun to read.

(I should mention that I am a friend of hers: but being a Mex-o-phile living in - and writing about - Oaxaca, I would have read this book - and learned from it - even if I didn't know her.)

Traces Mexico through centuries of splendor and oppression. Great facts and figures, most of my Mexican friends didn't comprehend the full extent of de-population after the Spaniards arrived.

Native American Language Ideologies: Beliefs, Practices, and Struggles in Indian CountryFrom University of Arizona Press

Beliefs and feelings about language vary dramatically within and across Native American cultural groups and are an acknowledged part of the processes of language shift and language death. This volume samples the language ideologies of a wide range of Native American communities--from the Canadian Yukon to Guatemala--to show their role in sociocultural transformation.

These studies take up such active issues as "insiderness" in Cherokee language ideologies, contradictions of space-time for the Northern Arapaho, language socialization and Paiute identity, and orthography choices and language renewal among the Kiowa. The authors--including members of indigenous speech communities who participate in language renewal efforts--discuss not only Native Americans' conscious language ideologies but also the often-revealing relationship between these beliefs and other more implicit realizations of language use as embedded in community practice.

The chapters discuss the impact of contemporary language issues related to grammar, language use, the relation between language and social identity, and emergent language ideologies themselves in Native American speech communities. And although they portray obvious variation in attitudes toward language across communities, they also reveal commonalities--notably the emergent ideological process of iconization between a language and various national, ethnic, and tribal identities.

As fewer Native Americans continue to speak their own language, this timely volume provides valuable grounded studies of language ideologies in action--those indigenous to Native communities as well as those imposed by outside institutions or language researchers. It considers the emergent interaction of indigenous and imported ideologies and the resulting effect on language beliefs, practices, and struggles in today's Indian Country as it demonstrates the practical implications of recognizing a multiplicity of indigenous language ideologies and their impact on heritage language maintenance and renewal.
