I READ MR GREENBERG BOOK LAST YEAR FOR A ANTHROPOLOGY CLASS . ITS THE ACTUAL ACOUNTS OF DR. GREENBERGS ADVENTURES IN RURAL MEXICO. WHERE HE MEETS THIS OLD MAN. THE BOOK CONTINUES TO CHRONICLE THE TROUBLED LIFE OF THIS OLD MAN. THEN ITS GOES INTO THE ANTHROPOLGICAL SIDE OF THE BOOK WHERE HE ANALYZIES THE RAMMIFICATIONS OF VIOLENCE IN MEXICO.
I REMEMBER THINKING TO MYSELF :THIS IS GOING TO BE JUST ANOTHER TEXT BOOK BUT THEN AFTER I READ IT I THOUGHT THIS GUY SEEMS LIKE A REAL INDIANA JONES. THE BOOK STARTS AS HE WITNESSES A MURDER AND IS INVOLVED IN A SHOOT OUT.

A MUST read book

Although I was not raised in a Christian home, my husband was. This book helped me to understand not only myself, but also why my husband did the things he did. I loved that the book highlights the fact that Christians (and in this case, Seventh-day Adventists), don't really know how to help people who struggle with issues of addiction and co-dependency. As a diagnostic tool, I found it to be excellent, and it helps to explain why many children, raised in Christian homes, end up in a similar place to those raised in families where the 'normal' addictions of alcohol, drugs, gambling etc are the predominant theme.

In the absence of wise pastoral care and support (i.e. more than just "you need to spend more time with God in prayer" or "read the Bible more") this book goes a long way to unwrap the cause, the mechanics and phenomena of the addiction cycle, and will definitely help those who feel that God either isn't helping them, or that they are too bad for God to be able to help. Most of all, I found in comfort in learning that I wasn't alone in the things I struggled with.

He considers Miranda's aftermath—not only the test cases and ongoing political and legal debate but also what happened to Ernesto Miranda. He then updates the story to the Supreme Court’s 2000 Dickerson decision upholding Miranda and considers its implications for cases in the wake of 9/11 and the rights of suspected terrorists. One of my favorite "textbooks"!!

This was my textbook for my undergrad etymology class, which was probably one of my favorite college classes. I had sold this textbook back after the class ended, but I couldn't stand to part with it! This book divides up Greek and Latin roots into chapters so you can learn a little bit at a time and is fairly comprehensive. This is likely a great gift for the odd word nerd like me. :)

Though tourism now plays a recognized role in historical research and regional studies, the study of popular touristic images remains sidelined by chronological histories and objective statistics. Further, Arizona remains underexplored as an early twentieth-century tourism destination when compared with nearby California and New Mexico. With the notable exception of the Grand Canyon, little has been written about tourism in the early days of Arizona’s statehood.

Mapping Wonderlands fills part of this gap in existing regional studies by looking at early popular pictorial maps of Arizona. These cartographic representations of the state utilize formal mapmaking conventions to create a place-based state history. They introduce illustrations, unique naming conventions, and written narratives to create carefully visualized landscapes that emphasize the touristic aspects of Arizona.

Analyzing the visual culture of tourism in illuminating detail, this book documents how Arizona came to be identified as an appealing tourism destination. Providing a historically situated analysis, Dori Griffin draws on samples from a comprehensive collection of materials generated to promote tourism during Arizona’s first half-century of statehood. She investigates the relationship between natural and constructed landscapes, visual culture, and narratives of place. Featuring sixty-six examples of these aesthetically appealing maps, the book details how such maps offered tourists and other users a cohesive and storied image of the state. Using historical documentation and rhetorical analysis, this book combines visual design and historical narrative to reveal how early-twentieth-century mapmakers and map users collaborated to imagine Arizona as a tourist’s paradise.

It also proposes that the selection of specific religious themes and their locations was determined by an unfamiliar convention based on a tree-like design, in which the founder of a religious Order appears as the root and followers above in later branchings—an inversion of the more familiar top-to-bottom hierarchy.

Historians Lange and Ahlborn identify all the saintly images and religious elements that adorn San Xavier and suggest how and why they are so arranged. They examine the sculptures and paintings of the church from the façade throughout the cruciform interior in order to determine the organizational concepts that underlie their placement. They note that the selection of images in this Franciscan mission follows traditional Roman Catholic practice for decorating churches in order to instruct novices and reinforce the teaching of conversion in a pictographic catechism of Church doctrine. In short, the book is a dictionary of religious personages and symbols that will help the visitor identify the biblical stories and people portrayed, as well as associated signs and symbols. Entries include a description of the subject, its location, appropriate cross-references, and a bibliography. Recent illustrations by photographer Helga Teiwes and a floor plan facilitate the location of images by visitors.

The bold opening to Queer Indigenous Studies invites new dialogues in Native American and Indigenous studies about the directions and implications of queer Indigenous studies. The collection notably engages Indigenous GLBTQ2 movements as alliances that also call for allies beyond their bounds, which the co-editors and contributors model by crossing their varied identities, including Native, trans, straight, non-Native, feminist, Two-Spirit, mixed blood, and queer, to name just a few.

About the Author
Qwo-Li Driskill is a Cherokee Queer/Two-Spirit writer, scholar, and performer. S/he is the author of Walking with Ghosts: Poems and is currently an assistant professor in the Department of English at Texas A&M University. Chris Finley is a queer Native feminist finishing her PhD in American culture at the University of Michigan. She is a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes located in Washington State.

Brian Joseph Gilley is an associate professor of anthropology and director of the First Nations Education and Culture Center at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is the author of Becoming Two-Spirit: Gay Identity and Social Acceptance in Indian Country. Scott Lauria Morgensen is an assistant professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Queen’s University. His work as a white queer critic of settler colonialism appears in his book Spaces between Us: Queer Settler Colonialism and Indigenous Decolonization.

A Generous yet Forceful Call to Action

Driskill, Finley, Gilley, and Morgensen have compiled an astounding and ground-breaking collection that challenges all of us to recognize and interrogate the intersections of sexuality, sovereignty, and settler colonialism. More importantly, though, the editors and authors graciously and generously invite all scholars, Native and non-Native alike, to respond to and understand their own role in these systems of oppression and the struggle to decolonize our lands, bodies, literature, and relationships.

Open to everyone

This is a great book to give you a glimpse of the intersections of sexuality, culture, tradition, and more and how this impacts indigenous peoples from several different lands. The authors are open and share of themselves with beauty.

Some chapters need a few readings to grasp all of the messages present, but it is not hardcore or only for graduates! Rather, I think, this work is sharing so much that goes against what the colonized mind has accepted as "normal" or "right", that it takes you awhile to achieve that epiphany and awareness of your own colonized thinking. I recommend it to everyone.

Really great new take

This book is great, it includes viewpoints typically excluded from other studies involving indigenous peoples.

And, contrary to what was posted in another review, I think it is accessible. It would certainly help to have some familiarity with the works that are cited in this book- but compared to a lot of things out there, it's a fairly straightforward read.
