Review
"Western Apache Material Culture is a collection of essays specifically about the Guenther and Goodwin Western Apache ethnographic collections at the Arizona State Museum, and about Western Apache culture. . . . This is an important book and will become the standard reference on Western Apache material culture." —American Indian Quarterly
"This book will surely appeal not only to those who are interested in the Apache, material culture studies, or the potential of Native American museum resources as cultural and historical documents, but also to those who are concerned with the way humans adapted to the environment and thus 'utilized their world so well.'" —African Arts
"It is a remarkably beautiful and detailed catalog of the Goodwin and Guenther collections of Wester Apache artiffacts in the Arizona State Musuem—and a lot more! . . . A section of thirty-two color photographs by award-winning photographer Helga Teiwes is the delectable frosting on this rich and satisfying cake." —Journal of Arizona History
From the Back Cover
This volume describes in detail two collections of Western Apache artifacts from east-central Arizona. The materials, belonging to the Arizona State Museum, range in age from the mid-1800's to the present and represent a thorough cross-section of tools, clothing, religious paraphernalia, and games.
About the Author
Alan Ferg has worked at the Arizona State Museum for more than 30 years, primarily as an archaeologist and an archivist. The images in this volume come mainly from the museum's own photographic collections.

A Must-Have
By eho-tuska
This book doesn't have page after page of pictures on cultural material. Some people may think this a fault. However, it does show many items that aren't often seen and covers the gamut of the material discussed. And these are photographs of the real deal - not line drawings. The gem in this book is the text because there is information not found elsewhere. People totally immersed in Apache life had the interest to document cultural material at a critical time. The documentation of the collection discussed was so well done, it ensures accuracy of the nature of the material it covers. If a person wants a more advanced book on Western Apache culture - this is a good one. It is also one of the only books that seperates Western Apache from the others. This book also contains literature citations that support the statements and that provide further research opportunity. This book is a must-have.

Includes some interesting stories about Apache Culture
By Patrick Moore LMT Educator
Much of the art in these pages is kept at the Arizona State Museum, on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson. Alan Ferg is still a curator there (or was as recently as 2007 when I spoke with him). At that time, some of the artists who are represented in this book were still living, and maybe they still are.
My favorite thing about the book was the second-hand stories about the culture of Native Americans, before their culture was drowned out by European Settlers. Though it is the minority of the book, these stories add to the dwindling sources for early accounts by and about Natives. Other books that do this well include The World We Used to Live In: Remembering the Powers of the Medicine Men, 2006, by Vine Deloria Jr.
The book is primarily about three dimensional art (material) and less about 2D, or "visual" art like paintings or drawings. In particular the book includes many details of the costumes used for Apache puberty ceremonies, like the beaded moccasin-boots and so forth. Miniatures also are represented, as you see on the cover.
