From Booklist
From the compiler of The Concise Columbia Dictionary of Quotations comes this collection of 18,000 quotations. They are arranged by fairly narrow subject headings (Love; Love, Ended; Love, First; Lovers), so generally there are not long lists of quotations under a subject. Within each heading, entries are arranged alphabetically by the name of the person being quoted rather than chronologically. Birth and death dates and a descriptive tag identify each author, and a citation to a printed source is given for all quotations. There is an index of personal names but no keyword or subject index.
Columbia is about the same size as The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations and a little smaller than Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. Oxford is arranged alphabetically by author with a keyword index, Bartlett's chronologically by author with keyword and author indexes. The compiler of Columbia claims that 11,000 of these quotations have never appeared in a quotation book before. This would appear to be the case: about half the sources cited are not found in Bartlett's or Oxford. For example, quotations from Marlon Brando, Paul Gauguin, Desmond Tutu, Camille Paglia, and Maya Angelou are found only in Columbia. Even when a source is found in all three books, there is often a different selection of quotations. For example, there are six quotations from American novelist Nelson Algren in Columbia; one of them is found in both Bartlett's and Oxford, the others are unique. Columbia quotes more late-twentieth-century sources than either of those two books, for example, hostage Terry Anderson, Eric Ambler, Shana Alexander, Donald Trump, and Ross Perot.
Because it lacks a keyword index, Columbia won't be the first place to look to try to identify a specific quotation. But if Bartlett's or Oxford or Stevenson's Home Book of Quotations don't turn up a source for a quotation, Columbia is the next place to try, especially for contemporary quotations with obvious subjects. Its topical arrangement will make it useful for those looking for something to quote, too Sandy Whiteley

A Lot of Problems
By Master Hahn
A number of errors here.
And frequently quotations have NO reference to a source!!!
Some of which are then repeated elsewhere.
For example:
RE: In his new book on the air campaign, Blaine Harden quotes Douglas MacArthur, not known for being soft-hearted, as saying: “I have seen, I guess, as much blood and disaster as any living man, and it just curdled my stomach, the last time I was [in Korea]. After I looked at that wreckage and those thousands of women and children and everything, I vomited.”
I have searched EVERYWHERE for verification of this quote.
Blaine Harden does not provide a footnote or any source for this quote in his book (March 2015).
In his book, "Napalm" (November 2015), Robert Neer also repeats the quote, but with a footnote that attributes it to a Senate inquiry (a massive inquiry if five volumes of nearly 4,000 pages) as to the facts leading up to the dismissal of MacArthur. And MacArthur DID testify in that inquiry.... over a three day period. Fortunately I was able to find an ounce university source that had a "searchable" version of all 5 volumes of that inquiry. Unfortunately, MacArthur never said anything like that (nor did anyone else). In fact, MacArthur's testimony was consistently to justify his public and congressional contacts to EXPAND the war, and especially air strikes, into China!
I have also searched all of MacArthur's public and known documented talks and writings and not found this referenced any where (to insure WW2 besides Korea).
This appears, IMO, to be an Internet Myth trying to take hold!
I think that there is sufficient justification for anti war convictions - if that is one's conviction (unless there are extremely Just War causes - and then it is imperative that international laws of warfare be met scrupulously) - without making special boogeyman status out of something like napalm (as versus White Phosphorus, Thermite, Fuel-Air Explosives, or - especially - nuclear weapons, which are ALL much worse weapons than napalm... as are MOST general incendiaries).
Or worse, being negligent and publishing exaggerated information, distorted information, or, sometimes, just outright false information which simply hurts their cause.
