A western classic

Historian Maria Montoya once wrote that this book served as the entry point for the twentieth century West, and I agree. It is one of the few texts that discusses "who" actually built the built environment. Most scholars give plenty of credit to government agencies for their part in building the West (especially the Bureau of Reclamation) but it was construction and engineering firms like Morrison-Knudsen, and Bechtel that actually built the dams, roads, canals, airports, power plants and other infrastructure. This book covers the work of the contractors in early twentieth century America in detail, and hence is very useful.
