More Than Two to Tango: Argentine Tango Immigrants in New York City, by Anahí Viladrich

The world of Argentine tango presents a glamorous façade of music and movement. Yet the immigrant artists whose livelihoods depend on the US tango industry receive little attention beyond their enigmatic public personas. More Than Two to Tango offers a detailed portrait of Argentine immigrants for whom tango is both an art form and a means of survival.

Based on a highly visible group of performers within the almost hidden population of Argentines in the United States, More than Two to Tango addresses broader questions on the understudied role of informal webs in the entertainment field. Through the voices of both early generations of immigrants and the latest wave of newcomers, Anahí Viladrich explores how the dancers, musicians, and singers utilize their complex social networks to survive as artists and immigrants. She reveals a diverse community navigating issues of identity, class, and race as they struggle with practical concerns, such as the high cost of living in New York City and affordable health care.

Argentina’s social history serves as the compelling backdrop for understanding the trajectory of tango performers, and Viladrich uses these foundations to explore their current unified front to keep tango as their own “authentic” expression. Yet social ties are no panacea for struggling immigrants. Even as More Than Two to Tango offers the notion that each person is truly conceived and transformed by their journeys around the globe, it challenges rosy portraits of Argentine tango artists by uncovering how their glamorous representations veil their difficulties to make ends meet in the global entertainment industry. In the end, the portrait of Argentine tango performers’ diverse career paths contributes to our larger understanding of who may attain the “American Dream,” and redefines what that means for tango artists.

It's better to understand and know other cultures or pull them apart?
By adrian
It think that it's a very good book. It's a research, not easy to write, with detailed experiences, talks and sources of the Argentine immigrants working as tango teachers, musicians, dancers, giving their daily energies to US public. They are artists looking for a space to live, trying to have the respect of many persons with their art. With pictures of perfomances, it is easy to understand what means Tango for this group which finally will create a family, friends and roots in the USA.
Students, young or old american people will have the opportunity to comprehend and know about of the Argentine culture in the past and through the present days.
This is not the first publication of Anahi Viladrich.Graduated in Sociology from the Univ. of Bs Aires and with various Master`s Degree and highest honors given by Columbia University, what she writes demonstrate a deep understanding in thies field.

Excellent!!!!
By Nadia Diaz, Ph.D.
Viladrich offers an in depth analysis of Argentine immigrants for whom Tango is a career as well as a means for survival in an unforgiving city such as New York. Her research intertwines social theory with personal vignettes as an illustration of social phenomena in both private an public spheres; she immerses the reader into the lives of these immigrants without losing academic rigor. Her field work is extensive and provides both a clear understanding of the background and evolution of Tango as an art form as well as the current struggle of the members of this community for survival in New York City.
More Than Two To Tango is a pristine academic work both enlightening for social science scholars as well as enjoyable for the layperson.

One of the most beautiful books written on the life of Jesus
By A Customer
This book is the most beautiful presentation, next to the
Bible, on the life of Jesus Christ that I have ever read.
It was written many years ago by a woman that had a writing
talent that very few Christian writers have today.
If you like her books, then you will probably like R. A.
Torrey's as well. They both have a love for people and for
Jesus.

Vietnam War (America at War (Chelsea House)), by William R Kenan Jr Professor of History Maurice Isserman

In clear, lucid prose, Vietnam War, Revised Edition explores the critical questions surrounding the United States' experience in Vietnam: What led President Lyndon B. Johnson to commit combat troops in 1965? How was it possible for the North Vietnamese to suffer a military defeat in the Tet Offensive in 1968 and yet achieve a political victory? What has America learned from the experience of fighting in Vietnam? This riveting history includes a clear discussion of the roots of U.S. involvement in Indochina in the days just after World War II and goes on to explore the varied and complex motives behind America's effort to halt the spread of communism in Asia. This new edition also features a chapter focusing on the innovative military tactics and weaponry involved throughout the conflict.

Grade 8-12-- An adequate, but not very interesting, history of the conflict and America's involvement in it. It is clear and well organized, covering both military and political history in chronological order. Isserman is objective about the war, showing readers how and why the U. S. became increasingly entangled in a situation it would not and eventually could not win. His assessments of both of the war-time Vietnamese governments and the unified postwar government are fair, as are those of the long-term effects of the loss on the United States. Black-and-white photographs and maps are of average quality. The book does not have the detail, emotion, or outstanding writing found in Marrin's America and Vietnam (Viking, 1992), which is a fascinating look at the war and its lasting legacy for both countries. As an addition sources for reports, Isserman's book is a far better choice than Barr's The Vietnam War (Lucent, 1991). --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO

My Review of Vietnam
By Lucas Rich
I enjoyed reading this book because Isserman describes in great detail the war and how it came to be. He not only uses true and astonishing facts about the war that I did not know, but he also provides real quotes and passages written by the soldiers during the time of the war. I also read first-hand accounts of how many of our political figures went about addressing the war publicly and privately. My favorite part of the book was learning about the reality of the war. I realized that many of the soldiers were not that much older than me and that they had to go through some of the most mentally terrifying and physically harsh times in the history of the United States. I also liked reading all of the background of the war so I know who was responsible for what and who was behind the enemy forces. Overall the book was fun to read because it was very factual and very formal. I suggest that you read it if you really want to know what went down in Vietnam.

Vietnam Vet Opinion
By Granville Flater
I recieved this book in a timely manner. It is used, but there were no signs of wear and tear. In fact, I thought it was new when I opened the package. I am very pleased with the condition of the book.
I bought the book because I am a Vietnam combat veteran. As I age, I find that the anger and fustration I felt towards the Vietnamese people was unwarranted, and needed to find a fresh perspective towards the people and their culture. I reviewed this book and thought it a good way to start some healing. I wanted a brief history of why we were there. This book gave me a very good understanding of the events that led up to the war, the key players involved, and how the escalation occurred.
I would recommend this book to others for the same reasons I read it, and for the curious who are exploring it for the first time. I believe that it would be a good starter book for younger readers, ages around 13-14.

Informative but not without its flaws
By Victor Lazlo
THE VIETNAM WAR ALMANAC is fairly-well put together, with a chronological aspect, kicking off with a bit of general Vietnamese history, right through French colonialism, Japanese World War II occupation, rekindling of French control, the defeat at Dem Bien Phu, the ensuing politics and division between North and South Vietnams and finally direct U.S. involvement beginning with the landing of the U.S. 9TH Marines at Da Nang on March 8, 1965 and on to the evacuation of Saigon in 1975 and beyond. The book then moves on into the category of the Land, Sea and Air Wars in that volatile country, and then some. There is a brief full-color photo section in the beginning of the book, followed by an array of b&w photography throughout. While the color photos are nice and detailed, about half the b&w are dismally vague, almost to the point where they are too darkened to fully appreciate. Then there are a few inaccuracies which played no small part in my three-star rating. One was a b&w photo whose caption read "..North Vietnamese troops crossing a river...". In actuality, the shot was taken during the Korean War and the soldiers are actually Red Chinese, judging from their quilted combat fatigues and fur-laden hats...in tropical surroundings? I don't think so! Then, there is an entry under March 9, 1965 stating "...U.S. Marines of the 9th Division landed at Da Nang armed with M-16s..." M-16s? Wrong again! Try standard-issue M-14 rifles. The latter weapon was still the official service rifle among the major U.S. armed forces in 1965; the M-16, while pretty much in existence, had just completed its developmental stage and, an innovation in its own right, was in that same year 1965, only utilized by specialized units like the Green Berets, their South Vietnamese counterparts and the first Airmobile (chopper) units to arrive later on. From what I understand, the M-16A1 only began to be issued to all U.S. personnel in Vietnam on a major scale by 1967, thus officially replacing the M-14, even though the latter would continue to soldier on with U.S. troops stationed in Europe, alongside other NATO forces, for another 2-3 years. Overall, the book is alright, that is, for those readers who wish to absorb the general history aspect of the Vietnam War. However, if you're a hardcore and historically-accurate nitpicker like myself, this book is not for you!

Take a good look at the American West and you'll see that the frontier is undergoing constant changes—not only changes made to the land but also changes in attitudes about the land held by the people who live there. In this book Mike Davis, Stephen Pyne, William deBuys, Donald Worster, Dan Flores, and others re-examine the relationship between people and the environment in the American West over five hundred years, from the legacy of Coronado's search for the Cities of Gold to the social costs of tourism and gaming inflicted by modern adventurers. By exploring places in the West, aspects of the region's past, and ways of understanding some of its pressing issues, the authors foster a better understanding of how people interact and perceive land. Reopening the American West takes a fresh approach to the history of the region, examining the premises of earlier scholars as well as those who have redefined the study of the West over the past two decades. It combines provocative essays with insightful analyses to address issues that are representative of the West in the twentieth century—multiculturalism, water issues, resource exploitation—and to reopen the West for all readers interested in new ways of looking at its wide-open spaces. Encyclopedia of Muslim-American History, 2-Volume Set (Library of American History), by Edward E. Curtis IV

Muslims have long played a central role in American history. Since the colonial period when an estimated 20,000 African Muslims were transported to America as slaves, through the early 20th century when Muslim immigrants entered the United States from the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, to the present day, Islam has been an integral part of the American experience. The founding of the Nation of Islam in the 1930s augmented the Muslim-American population among African Americans, and this group including such prominent figures as Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Louis Farrakhan has had an enormous influence on American life and politics since the 1960s. Since passage of the Immigration Act of 1965, approximately 1 million Muslims have come to America, establishing new neighborhoods and communities in all 50 states.

Few groups are as diverse as Muslim Americans, and yet no other group has been as stereotyped, maligned, or marginalized in American society. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 produced a heavy backlash, transforming the Muslim-American experience in the United States. At the dawn of the 21st century, they are often misunderstood by mainstream society, portrayed as caricatures if they are portrayed at all.

The new Encyclopedia of Muslim-American History aims to rectify this treatment and place Muslim Americans squarely in the center of American history and culture. Written in clear and jargon-free prose, this authoritative reference provides a new and broader, more inclusive approach to American history. Including nearly 300 articles, this two-volume reference book is the first to focus on this critical subject, covering all the historical and contemporary issues, events, people, court cases, themes, and activism relating to Muslim Americans. More than 100 historians, scholars, and experts contributed to this encyclopedia, tracing the experiences and impact that Muslim Americans have had on our nation's history for hundreds of years. Original documents, a master chronology, and an extensive bibliography complete this illustrated reference.

*Starred Review* As America continues to debate the position of Islam in a post-9/11 society, it is critical that we have an open discourse, informed by knowledge of the various contributions made by Muslim Americans to U.S. society. In this set, Curtis (religious studies, Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis) and more than 130 other scholars introduce readers to a wide diversity of Muslim American people, ideas, and institutions (including Muhammad Ali, Dave Chappelle, Sufism, and the Islamic Center of Washington, D.C.) that have greatly influenced and continue to shape American identity. Related issues, events, court cases, and other topics are covered as well. Following a brief introduction and 14-page chronology (described in the introduction as “the most comprehensive chronology of Muslim-American history ever published”), the work dives into the 280 individual A–Z signed entries, which vary in length from a few paragraphs for specific topics such as LADO (Latino American Dawah Organization) to several pages for topics such as Dress; Health care; Nation of Islam; Politics; Qur’an; September 11, 2001; and Shari ‘a. The entries are all cross-referenced, composed of even scholarship, and contain a list of both print and online works for further study. Scattered throughout the two volumes are 50 essential documents, including articles, poems, letters, and speeches, such as “Poems of Daniel Abdal-Hayy Moore” and “A Fatwa Concerning Noble Drew Ali” (1931). These documents, which follow corresponding entries, allow users to expand their understanding of the subject under discussion as well as familiarize themselves with new perspectives. The work concludes with an extensive 12-page bibliography and a comprehensive index. Also included in an appendix of the work is the full text of President Obama’s 2009 speech in Cairo, Egypt, in which he addressed past injuries and called for a future sustained effort to locate common religious and cultural ground. Although it covers some of the same topics as Encyclopedia of Islam in the United States (Greenwood, 2007), Encyclopedia of Muslim-American History has secular as well as a religious focus. Filled with high-quality, relevant information on a subject of profound importance, it is a worthwhile addition to any high-school, public, or college library collection. --Brian Odom
