In clear, lucid prose, Vietnam War, Revised Edition explores the critical questions surrounding the United States' experience in Vietnam: What led President Lyndon B. Johnson to commit combat troops in 1965? How was it possible for the North Vietnamese to suffer a military defeat in the Tet Offensive in 1968 and yet achieve a political victory? What has America learned from the experience of fighting in Vietnam? This riveting history includes a clear discussion of the roots of U.S. involvement in Indochina in the days just after World War II and goes on to explore the varied and complex motives behind America's effort to halt the spread of communism in Asia. This new edition also features a chapter focusing on the innovative military tactics and weaponry involved throughout the conflict.

Grade 8-12-- An adequate, but not very interesting, history of the conflict and America's involvement in it. It is clear and well organized, covering both military and political history in chronological order. Isserman is objective about the war, showing readers how and why the U. S. became increasingly entangled in a situation it would not and eventually could not win. His assessments of both of the war-time Vietnamese governments and the unified postwar government are fair, as are those of the long-term effects of the loss on the United States. Black-and-white photographs and maps are of average quality. The book does not have the detail, emotion, or outstanding writing found in Marrin's America and Vietnam (Viking, 1992), which is a fascinating look at the war and its lasting legacy for both countries. As an addition sources for reports, Isserman's book is a far better choice than Barr's The Vietnam War (Lucent, 1991). --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO

My Review of Vietnam
By Lucas Rich
I enjoyed reading this book because Isserman describes in great detail the war and how it came to be. He not only uses true and astonishing facts about the war that I did not know, but he also provides real quotes and passages written by the soldiers during the time of the war. I also read first-hand accounts of how many of our political figures went about addressing the war publicly and privately. My favorite part of the book was learning about the reality of the war. I realized that many of the soldiers were not that much older than me and that they had to go through some of the most mentally terrifying and physically harsh times in the history of the United States. I also liked reading all of the background of the war so I know who was responsible for what and who was behind the enemy forces. Overall the book was fun to read because it was very factual and very formal. I suggest that you read it if you really want to know what went down in Vietnam.

Vietnam Vet Opinion
By Granville Flater
I recieved this book in a timely manner. It is used, but there were no signs of wear and tear. In fact, I thought it was new when I opened the package. I am very pleased with the condition of the book.
I bought the book because I am a Vietnam combat veteran. As I age, I find that the anger and fustration I felt towards the Vietnamese people was unwarranted, and needed to find a fresh perspective towards the people and their culture. I reviewed this book and thought it a good way to start some healing. I wanted a brief history of why we were there. This book gave me a very good understanding of the events that led up to the war, the key players involved, and how the escalation occurred.
I would recommend this book to others for the same reasons I read it, and for the curious who are exploring it for the first time. I believe that it would be a good starter book for younger readers, ages around 13-14.

Informative but not without its flaws
By Victor Lazlo
THE VIETNAM WAR ALMANAC is fairly-well put together, with a chronological aspect, kicking off with a bit of general Vietnamese history, right through French colonialism, Japanese World War II occupation, rekindling of French control, the defeat at Dem Bien Phu, the ensuing politics and division between North and South Vietnams and finally direct U.S. involvement beginning with the landing of the U.S. 9TH Marines at Da Nang on March 8, 1965 and on to the evacuation of Saigon in 1975 and beyond. The book then moves on into the category of the Land, Sea and Air Wars in that volatile country, and then some. There is a brief full-color photo section in the beginning of the book, followed by an array of b&w photography throughout. While the color photos are nice and detailed, about half the b&w are dismally vague, almost to the point where they are too darkened to fully appreciate. Then there are a few inaccuracies which played no small part in my three-star rating. One was a b&w photo whose caption read "..North Vietnamese troops crossing a river...". In actuality, the shot was taken during the Korean War and the soldiers are actually Red Chinese, judging from their quilted combat fatigues and fur-laden hats...in tropical surroundings? I don't think so! Then, there is an entry under March 9, 1965 stating "...U.S. Marines of the 9th Division landed at Da Nang armed with M-16s..." M-16s? Wrong again! Try standard-issue M-14 rifles. The latter weapon was still the official service rifle among the major U.S. armed forces in 1965; the M-16, while pretty much in existence, had just completed its developmental stage and, an innovation in its own right, was in that same year 1965, only utilized by specialized units like the Green Berets, their South Vietnamese counterparts and the first Airmobile (chopper) units to arrive later on. From what I understand, the M-16A1 only began to be issued to all U.S. personnel in Vietnam on a major scale by 1967, thus officially replacing the M-14, even though the latter would continue to soldier on with U.S. troops stationed in Europe, alongside other NATO forces, for another 2-3 years. Overall, the book is alright, that is, for those readers who wish to absorb the general history aspect of the Vietnam War. However, if you're a hardcore and historically-accurate nitpicker like myself, this book is not for you!
