The Repatriated: All but Forgotten

I first came across this book by Abraham Hoffman, THE UNWANTED: Mexican-Americans in the Great Depression, while in high school. Howeverm much to my own intellectual detriment, I did not read it.

I finally read it about two years ago. This is a slight, somewhat dry, but highly informative book is well researched and takes an important place along with books like McWilliams's NORTH FROM MEXICO, in Mexican-American Studies.

Hoffman details the inner workings of this shameful period, from the Washington policy-makers like William Doak, down to the LA Country officials carrying out the dirty work. He relies on many US and Mexican archival sources. Thus his figures are more accurate than that of others like Louisa Shotwell in THE HARVESTERS, or McWilliams himself, both of which he criticizes, but only from the perspective of trying to be accurate--not from an ideological point of view. Thus there is no editorializing.

This is Professor Hoffman's contribution to Mexican-American Studies. It needs to be read by high school and higher education Mexican-American students. Don't wait for your teacher or professor to tell you about this chapter in history.

THE BOOK CONTINUES TO CHRONICLE THE TROUBLED LIFE OF THIS OLD MAN. THEN ITS GOES INTO THE ANTHROPOLGICAL SIDE OF THE BOOK WHERE HE ANALYZIES THE RAMMIFICATIONS OF VIOLENCE IN MEXICO.
I REMEMBER THINKING TO MYSELF :THIS IS GOING TO BE JUST ANOTHER TEXT BOOK BUT THEN AFTER I READ IT I THOUGHT THIS GUY SEEMS LIKE A REAL INDIANA JONES. THE BOOK STARTS AS HE WITNESSES A MURDER AND IS INVOLVED IN A SHOOT OUT.

A MUST read book

Although I was not raised in a Christian home, my husband was. This book helped me to understand not only myself, but also why my husband did the things he did. I loved that the book highlights the fact that Christians (and in this case, Seventh-day Adventists), don't really know how to help people who struggle with issues of addiction and co-dependency. As a diagnostic tool, I found it to be excellent, and it helps to explain why many children, raised in Christian homes, end up in a similar place to those raised in families where the 'normal' addictions of alcohol, drugs, gambling etc are the predominant theme.

In the absence of wise pastoral care and support (i.e. more than just "you need to spend more time with God in prayer" or "read the Bible more") this book goes a long way to unwrap the cause, the mechanics and phenomena of the addiction cycle, and will definitely help those who feel that God either isn't helping them, or that they are too bad for God to be able to help. Most of all, I found in comfort in learning that I wasn't alone in the things I struggled with.
