On a sweltering August morning, a woman walked into a Buddhist temple near Phoenix and discovered the most horrific crime in Arizona history. Nine Buddhist temple members—six of them monks committed to lives of non-violence—lay dead in a pool of blood, shot execution style. The massive manhunt that followed turned up no leads until a tip from a psychiatric patient led to the arrest of five suspects. Each initially denied their involvement in the crime, yet one by one, under intense interrogation, they confessed.
Soon after, all five men recanted, saying their confessions had been coerced. One was freed after providing an alibi, but the remaining suspects—dubbed “The Tucson Four” by the media—remained in custody even though no physical evidence linked them to the crime.
Seven weeks later, investigators discovered—almost by chance—physical evidence that implicated two entirely new suspects. The Tucson Four were finally freed on November 22 after two teenage boys confessed to the crime, yet troubling questions remained. Why were confessions forced out of innocent suspects? Why and how did legal authorities build a case without evidence? And, ultimately, how did so much go so wrong?
In this first book-length treatment of the Buddhist Temple Massacre, Gary L. Stuart explores the unspeakable crime, the inexplicable confessions, and the troubling behavior of police officials. Stuart’s impeccable research for the book included a review of the complete legal records of the case, an examination of all the physical evidence, a survey of three years of print and broadcast news, and more than fifty personal interviews related to the case. Like In Cold Blood, and The Executioner’s Song, Innocent Until Interrogated is a riveting read that provides not only a striking account of the crime and the investigation but also a disturbing look at the American justice system at its very worst.

*Starred Review* Many true-crime works have as their raison d’etre the exhumation of crimes just for shock value. Stuart’s examination of a mass murder goes beyond mere reportage into investigative journalism, uncovering a system of abuse that has led to many destroyed lives. On August 10, 1991, a woman who cleaned and cooked for the monks at the Buddhist temple Wat Promkunaram in the Valley of the Sun outside Phoenix found nine Buddhist monks shot execution-style, their bodies arranged in a ritualistic-looking circle, nine heads toward the center. The crime scene was rich in evidence, but, according to Stuart’s exhaustive research (he conducted more than 50 interviews, along with studying all the case documents, including police reports, trial testimony, depositions, exhibits, and sworn affidavits), that evidence was ignored in favor of convicting five men on the basis of a tip from a psychiatric patient and the men’s coerced confessions. This is a thoroughly engrossing book that should awaken outrage. Stuart leads the reader from crime scene through trial and beyond in a way that is detailed but never boring. His target is the system by which hard evidence is sometimes ignored in favor of coerced confessions, performed with great psychological skill on vulnerable suspects. Stuart, an attorney, is the author of Miranda: The Story of Americas Right to Remain Silent (2004). --Connie Fletcher

From the Inside Flap
This riveting book revisits one of the most horrific crimes in Arizona's history: the mass murder of nine residents of a Buddhist temple near Phoenix in 1991. Like In Cold Blood and other true-life crime books, it is a page-turner. But it also raises troubling questions about modern police procedures.

Innocent Until Interrogated
By Justice Ain't Always Easy
Even though the book was written from the view of a defense attorney, as a police detective assigned to investigate homicides, I'd suggest this as required reading for all investigators, new and those with experience, and their supervisors. The book is well-written and informative.

Informative yet disturbing read
By kristikrum
I just happened to snag this book at the library on a whim, as I have a few buddhist friends and the description sounded interesting. As the introduction says, its not really a book about buddhists and culture but is concerning the interrogation and outcome of the crime.
This is not a poetic book that is a breeze to read, but the content will fascinate you and keep you engaged until the end. It is a bit frightening to now be aware of the quest to appease the general public at the expense of finding the truth in criminal cases, especially involving murders. It is also appalling to know that hard evidence easily available is overlooked in return for information received through unreliable sources and circumstances.
Prepare to have your views of law enforcement and the justice system as a whole exposed and overturned. This is definitely an interesting and worthwhile read.

A True Crime Page Turner
By rebecca fontaine
There have been several recent writings on this subject (John Grisham The Confession for example) but none are as captivating. Written by an attorney who practices law in Arizona the subject is incredibly well researched. The book begins by detailing the temple murders but quickly transfers to the concerted efforts of law enforcement to make arrests by forcing innocent men to confess. What is troubling about the story is that it is based on facts and real life interviews along with court documents. Most people assume that we are innocent until proven guilty but this story underlies the fact that given cirucumstances almost anyone can be made to confess. Many of the suspects are not likeable and it is easy to judge them before their trial. After all, why would someone confess to something they did not do? But that is the story here. What would you say if you were kept awake hour after hour and "fed" information about murder. It is frightening to realize that police can promise, lie and manipulate all in the name of interrogation. What is just as frightening is that a group of young adults knew about the murders but did nothing to call it to the attention of anyone despite arrests of innocent men. At the end there is resolution but not before another murder and the arrest of a mentally ill vietnam vet. This a page turning disturbing read because as an American I want to believe I have protection and could never be falsly accused. What I discovered is that I want a lawyer, and preferably the lawyer who wrote this book, at my side from that first moment of questioning. Be afraid, be very afraid if you find yourself accused and do not have an attorney present.
